[cayugabirds-l] 12/9 SS Woods: Rusty Blackbirds more
Sapsucker Woods Highlights: RUSTY BLACKBIRDS male PILEATED WOODPECKER Spotted the Rusty Blackbirds right away just by their silhouettes (SFO classes are paying off! :) ) upon my arrival just before 4pm. I went in to the visitor center and asked if anyone else had seen Rusties and yes Dave Nutter had reported them too. They hung around quite awhile eating berries near the parking lot circle. I was able to have my best views ever. Another treat was watching the male Pileated Woodpecker that seems to be hanging around the CLO suet feeders a lot lately. I've been told it started doing this in July? 3 Canada Goose 26 Mallard 3 Ring-billed Gull 35 Mourning Dove 1 Downy Woodpecker 1 Pileated Woodpecker 12 Black-capped Chickadee 2 Tufted Titmouse 2 White-breasted Nuthatch 6 European Starling 4 American Tree Sparrow 2 Dark-eyed Junco 3 Northern Cardinal 2 Rusty Blackbird -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html 3) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Short-eared Owls
Chuck Gibson reported 3 SEOW from the Wilgoose Grassland after Bob talked with him. Jane -Original Message- From: bounce-7515281-3493...@list.cornell.edu on behalf of bob mcguire Sent: Thu 12/9/2010 7:21 PM To: cayugabirdlist Subject: [cayugabirds-l] Short-eared Owls After lunch I continued to the northern Montezuma complex in search of raptors and owls. Van Dyne Spoor Road has been plowed to where the woods end and the fields open up. From there I walked east, watching for shrikes and owls. At 2:50 the first Short-eared Owl glided in from the NE and perched on top of one of the electric poles. A scan out across the field produced a second SHEAOW on one of the saplings. From there I drove down East Road, stopping briefly at the Knox- Marcellus overlook. Two Short-eared Owls were foraging over the field/ marsh. Next stop was on Rt 89 just south of Goose Haven. Jim Eckler, who I had run into on VD Spoor Rd, mentioned a recent sighting of several SHEAOW there. Chuck Gibson was manning a scope along the road and reported no owls yet (about 3:30). My last stop was the new Seneca Meadows Wetland Preserve north of Seneca Falls. Two Red-tailed Hawks were visible from the parking lot, and an American Kestrel flew over as I walked south. From the southern platform I watched two Short-eared Owls fly back and forth over the meadows and eventually perch in a large, lone oak (4:00). After awhile one of the Red-tails flew in and dislodged the owls who then continued foraging while emitting an occasional soft bark call. [cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Snow Buntings
Driving home over Mt Pleasant Road about 1:30 I watched a flock of 21 Horned Larks and, a little farther down the road, a flock of 14 Snow Buntings. All were in the cornfield on the south side of Mt Pleasant Road just west of its junction with Mineah Road. A couple of days ago, 27 Wild Turkeys were foraging in the same field. [cayugabirds-l] Rusty Blackbirds, more Snow Buntings, etc.
Today, I saw 2 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS at the bend of Sapsucker Woods Rd, near the Lab's bird feeding garden -- apparently they were seen yesterday as well. Also in that area was a flock of at least 50 HOUSE FINCHES (the largest flock I have seen in several years), and about 10 WAXWINGS -- all Cedars. Yesterday, a MERLIN perched briefly in a treetop on the north side of the Lab building, and then flew off towards the airport. A flock of about 100 SNOW BUNTINGS was near the intersection of Irish Settlement Rd and Rt. 13 yesterday around 1 PM. A FLICKER and a CAROLINA WREN visited the feeders at home this morning, but no interesting sparrows. [cayugabirds-l] winter additions on Teeter rd.
A Northern Flicker, with bird feeder experience arrived at ours on upper Teeter Rd. this morning, joining the numerous Red Bellies, Hairy and Downy Woodpeckers. The first White Throat Sparrows arrived just last week and the usual Junco flock on the deck has begun to build up. Hmmm, I can't ignore some competition from the squirrels that compete for the spilled seed on the deck there seem to be more Goldfinches than in the summer but, not such gold gold now and lots of Purple Finches. Numerous squirrels compete for the feed that spills A few Crows seem to use our deck as a social center early in the morning too Watt Webb -- Watt W. Webb Professor of Applied Physics S.B.
