70+ STARLINGS ... descended into the cedars.
1 MOCKINGBIRD ... defending the cedars from the starlings.
6 CROWS ... checking the compost pile.
3 BLUE JAYS ... being chased by angry mockingbird.

To all you wonderful folks who have posted /or helped other birders uplifted
others in one way or another
I wish you many blessings. Keep smiling may joy be in your hearts evermore.

[cayugabirds-l] Red-throated Loon, Stewart Park

2010-12-30 Thread Jay McGowan
A RED-THROATED LOON that Bill Evans and I found from the railroad tracks a
mile north of South End is now visible from Stewart Park. We also saw a
female LONG-TAILED DUCK in the same area. No other particular rarities on
our walk from Stewart to Myers, although we did see a number of Eastern
Bluebirds and both Horned and Pied-billed grebes and a couple Common Loons a
little south of Myers.

[cayugabirds-l] Turkeys on Mt Pleasant

2010-12-30 Thread Candace Cornell
At 10:30 am today there was a flock of 23 turkeys on Mt Pleasant Rd. They
were far back in a field (south side of the road) on the second to last
hilltop before Midline Road.

[cayugabirds-l] Mud Lock, Cayuga Seneca Falls

2010-12-30 Thread John and Fritzie Blizzard
12-30-'10 mid-afternoon: Went to Geneva. Sun was at the wrong angle.

MANY (unknown varieties) SWANS, geese, ducks on along the OPEN CHANNEL NORTH
OF THE RR BRIDGE at Cayuga.

1 BALD EAGLE, adult ... Mud Lock.

200+ RB GULLS, 2 GBB GULLS, 3 BLACK DUCKS at Van Cleef Lake in Seneca Falls.

Daughter, Becky had seen numerous Common Mergs in those areas on Tues. as well
as on the Mill pond in Union Springs. Also had a male Hooded Merganser amidst
the many Canadas Red Heads.

From Geneva back to Union Springs we saw Canadas flying constantly. Where DO
they get enough food

One of you fly fishermen go out lasso that Eider for me. How maddening to
know it twice was just on the other side of the marina from me I missed it.
And Dave you the others who saw it or took pix ... I'm so glad for you
but that doesn't put a check mark on my list!

I love the enthusiasm in the posts for the CBC. Success, all!!

[cayugabirds-l] Owl Prowl, Avoiding duplication

2010-12-30 Thread confer
Hi Folks,

It is so nice that there are several people going out owling. I've gone
out owling for over 55 years on Christmas Counts, including about 30 years in
the Cayuga Bird Club area. Until the last 10 years or so, there never were
enough people to worry much about counting the same owl. Fortunately, now there
are several owl counters.

Let me describe my intended route and anyone can let me know if I'm going
over a location covered by their plans. There are enough places left out that I
can be flexible.

I'm going to start up
Hammond Hill Rd for the resident Barred Owl at 1:15,
followed in sequence by:
Harford-Slaterville Rd. near Flatiron Rd
Rt. 79 toward Slaterville Springs
in Slaterville Springs
Old 600 Rd.
Frank Proto's house on Rt 79
Lounsberry Rd. near Brooktondale
two locations on Besemer Rd
intersection of Turkey Hill and Mount Pleasant
Freeze Rd at Fall Creek and near bee lab
Sapsucker Woods Rd at south end for Barred Owl
and at north end for SCOW
behind airport
Neimi Rd, both West and East of Hanshaw
Sheldon Rd, about 200 m and at 800 m south of Neimi Rd
Spring House Rd at Fall Creek
I figure that I will have almost 6 hours of owling before it gets too light
and can do each stop with travel at about 15-20 min intervals.
New Year's night is supposed to be the first night above freezing in over
~3 weeks. Those Great HOrned Owls should be ready to go, and Screech Owls like
to sinhg when it is warmer. Could be a great night for owling.
I got a new boom box with about 112 decibel output and several files with
great sounds for different species of owls and different calls for the same owl
species (3 Barred Owl calls). One of those Barred Owls just won't be able to
resist answering.

Anyone want to join me at some time/place?

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Owl Prowl, Avoiding duplication

2010-12-30 Thread Kenneth Victor Rosenberg
Hi John,

thanks for sharing this very ambitious route -- hopefully it will inspire
others to get out owling (and don't save it for the second evening as it is
likely to rain). I often try for the Barred and Screech on Sapsucker Woods Rd.,
so I will avoid these and try for others.

good luck!
