Subject: [cayugabirds-l] Sunday Cayuga Lake Birding

Hi,

This afternoon I went up the west side of Cayuga Lake and circled around
eastward to Union Springs before it got dark. Three LONG-TAILED DUCKS and a
pair of AMERICAN WIGEON were about the only birds of note at Sheldrake.
There's now open water at Mud Lock, which is hosting three TRUMPETER SWANS and
many TUNDRA SWANS. A polynya north of Harris Park was filled to the brim with
Aythya ducks, dabblers, gulls, and swans:

I spent the last half hour before sunset scanning through the mother raft of
waterfowl off Frontenac Park in Union Springs:

Frontenac Park, Cayuga, US-NY
Feb 20, 2011 5:00 PM - 5:30 PM
Protocol: Stationary
Comments: Overcast, calm winds. Glass lake.
22 species (+1 other taxa)

Canada Goose 300
Tundra Swan 50
Gadwall 30
American Wigeon 15
American Black Duck 100
Mallard 150
Northern Pintail 4
Canvasback 2500
Redhead 18000 Two unbroken parallel lines of amorphous width spanning from
the island to Farleys Pt.
Ring-necked Duck 500
Greater Scaup X
Lesser Scaup X
Greater/Lesser Scaup 2000
Bufflehead 30
Common Goldeneye 175
Hooded Merganser 1
Common Merganser 250
Ring-billed Gull X
Herring Gull (American) X
Great Black-backed Gull X
Eastern Bluebird 7 Flew in from the south into the large willow in front
of the building, then continued northward.
European Starling 15
American Tree Sparrow 1 heard only

Of course the numbers above are only estimates but I don't think any of them
are too unreasonable.

Good birding

[cayugabirds-l] Mud Lock Eagles

2011-02-21 Thread Kathy Strickland

Swung by the Lock yesterday noon and found both adult Bald Eagles at the nest,
one in it, another in a nearby tree. The latter swung down and caught a fish,
flew to the nest where it proceeded to eat it, while the one that had been in
the nest flew into a tree, presumable to watch for lunch.

Proceeding from there south down the lake there were a lot of Tundra Swans in
groups ranging from 15 to over 300. My rough estimate is around 1500.

[cayugabirds-l] Carolina Wren pair come to be counted today.

2011-02-21 Thread Nari Mistry
Both of the Carolina Wren pair appeared together today at our suet,
just so they could be counted for the GBBC. They were missing since
last Thursday and only one at a time has appeared sporadically last
week. A red squirrel happily sits all day inside the outer suet cage,
discouraging small birds -- in spite of my efforts to persuade him
away to seed elsewhere, cajole him, threaten him.

In past years a CAWren pair has stayed around all year and even once
nested in a brush pile. Hope they do again.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Carolina Wren pair come to be counted today.

2011-02-21 Thread Naomi Brewer
Nari -
Your story of your squirrel made me want to share my story -
Saturday(2nd day of bird count) morning I noticed the cardinals flying to my
big green metal feeder, then flying away without stopping for food. I
thought it must be empty, my son thought not. He went out with a bucket of
food anyway and as he got to the feeder he could see gray fur where the
birds would eat so he carefully raised the metal cover and out flew a gray
squirrel. It had to have spent the night in there at least. And he had eaten
all the food.!! I don't see how he got the metal cover up enough to get in.
My 4 pair of Cardinals and all the other birds are happy again.

[cayugabirds-l] short-ears in ovid

2011-02-21 Thread Marty Schlabach
This evening, just before dark, Mary Jean and Phil headed to the Wycoff Rd and
Rock River Rd area to check for SHORT-EARED OWLS. They saw 4 owls in that
area, flying, perching on posts or treetops and one sitting in the middle of
the road eating a mouse. Then on their way home, they saw another along Munson
Rd between Hall Rd and Rt. 96.

Best,
Marty
