[cayugabirds-l] Myers Point 1Dec2011; South End Brant
With today's north winds, lots of loons were moving past Myers Point this morning, mostly quite high. They started pretty much as soon as I arrived at 7, but by 7:30 there wasn't a loon in the sky. I wasn't able to pick out any Red-throated from the distant migrating birds, but a nice adult RED-THROATED LOON popped up right in front of me at the lighthouse and I later saw it out on the lake and then north of the point. Not too many other birds of note...two flocks of REDHEAD flying south and a pair of COMMON GOLDENEYE. Still huge numbers of Ring-billed Gulls roving the lake, but I didn't see any other interesting gulls mixed in. The Salt Point COMMON YELLOWTHROAT survived the night and was still chipping away this morning as well. Also perhaps of interest to folks who have missed them so far, two juvenile BRANT are still being seen at the mouth of the Treman Marina, visible from the marina itself (at Alan Treman Marine Park) or more distantly from the west end of Stewart Park. Tim had a few Red-throated Loons out on the lake from Stewart as well. [cayugabirds-l] Carolina Wren
Talking about strange vocalizations, a few times in the last week or two I've found a Carolina Wren (got a visual ID at about 5' away) making a croaking sound. It was definitely not it's typical song, but each time was at 7 AM and it flies off before it gets light enough to photograph. This was along Seneca Lake, southeast of Geneva, off East Lake Rd. -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] loons scoters, etc, off Treman Marine park
This afternoon (1 Dec) I walked from my house through Cass Park, past Treman Marina, to Cayuga Lake. Birds of special interest included:an apparent hybrid CANADA GOOSE X BLUE GOOSE in the southeast corner of the lake among the CANADA GEESE. It had a brown body and a white head and neck, and a point of the brown extending up the side of the neck.2 BRANT as Jay reported in Treman Marina1 WHITE-WINGED SCOTER female diving far beyond the piling cluster with1 BLACK SCOTER female5 RED-THROATED LOONS, the most I've ever confidently seen. One was diving off East Shore Park, one was floating off the Treman Park lakeshore, and 3 were diving far beyond the piling cluster in the middle of the lake. This impressed eBird as well as it did me.2 COMMON LOONS diving far to the northwest toward shore5 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS resting on a log west of the red lighthouse. This impressed me more than it did eBird.12 TURKEY VULTURES soaring over Cayuga Heights. This impressed eBird more than it did me.I may have also heard a COMMON REDPOLL calling from a tree along the lakeshore, but it and its buddy flew off before I could get a look.--Dave Nutter -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: Welcome and Basics Rules and Information Subscribe, Configuration and Leave Archives: The Mail Archive Surfbirds BirdingOnThe.Net Please submit your observations to eBird! --

[cayugabirds-l] An interesting (sound) observation...etc
Hi all, Walking back from the back of my yard just now, I heard a distant Northern Cardinal singing. Wondering where it was, I went a little further and to my surprise the song immediately changed direction. Listening carefully, I realized that it was not distant at all, but was coming from my Blue Spruce tree just about 8 feet above my head! It was a cardinal singing VERY VERY quietly! Presumably it's the young male (dark beak) that comes to the feeder and he is roosting in that tree. Also of interest, a Tufted Titmouse has been singing on and off around the yard for a couple of days. The song sounds a little wobbly...also a young bird? And finally, at noon there was a bemused looking Ruffed Grouse standing at the very edge of the woods on Baker Hill Rd at Mt Pleasant Rd. Seemed to be soaking up the sun, and apparently not perturbed when I backed up to watch it for a while. Birds never cease to delight me! Re: [cayugabirds-l] An interesting (sound) observation...etc
Nice sound observations Marie. The other morning, early, at the Arboretum, an American Robin singing, also very quietly, like under his breath. I took it to be a young one also, practicing Delights abound.
