Re:[cayugabirds-l] Barred owl at Sapsucker Woods
Hi all, sorry for the terse email, I was walking with a friend and didn't have much time. This is presumably the same owl that seen last week sitting in the same spot in the same tree (on the Severinghaus trail). If you go o look for it, don't stay too long. The bird flushed after multiple visits last week. It gives great looks with binoculars if you make a brief stop. Re: Re:[cayugabirds-l] Barred owl at Sapsucker Woods
The local SFO group on Sunday had a great scope view of a/the Barred Owl as we looked east from the trail between the Wilson Trail and the trail intersection just west of the gate along Sapsucker Woods Rd. A sharp-eyed SFO student at the back of our group discovered it in a distant relatively small pine, halfway up, close to the trunk, and not obvious to the untrained naked eye. I don't think we bothered it because we stayed on the trail which was not close to the bird. The bird appeared to be dozing with eyes half shut and it did not move.--Dave NutterOn Apr 24, 2012, at 09:26 AM, Brad Walker edgarallenhoo...@gmail.com wrote:Hi all, sorry for the terse email, I was walking with a friend and didn't have much time. This is presumably the same owl that seen last week sitting in the same spot in the same tree (on the Severinghaus trail). Re: Re:[cayugabirds-l] Barred owl at Sapsucker Woods
The bird seemed very relaxed and sleepy while we were there (SFO group). I went back after class after grabbing my camera from the car and the bird was gone. When I emailed our local group (Broome County--bluewing) Anne Clark emailed me back saying that she'd heard my owl repeatedly when she was near her crows nests. Makes a person wish they knew (and saw) more in the lives of these creatures! [cayugabirds-l] Fish Crows/Siskins/Chippies
Hello all, FISH CROWS continue in Cortland, 2 CHIPPING SPARROWS were under my feeders this morning, and PINE SISKINS are nesting at just about every state forest in CNY this year. It's the best siskin nesting year in CNY since 2004. FWIW: Siskins have nesting at Summerhill and other state lands like it in 2001, 2004, 2009 and 2012. Also, last Tuesday (sorry for lateness) in the middle of the day, I heard a BARRED OWL call twice on the south side of the pond at Sapsucker Woods (unless someone was imitating one). cheers, Matt Young mail2web - Check your email from the web at http://link.mail2web.com/mail2web -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] R. Grouse@Sapsucker Woods (SSW)
As walking on Wilson Trail clockwise. I had just passed the wooden bird blind when I spotted a RUFFED GROUSE on the trail right by the gate that goes to outdoor eating area for employees. It was walking along the trail heading away from me towards the gate. I was able to alert Kevin Jay McGowan and they along with Brad Walker Livia Santana were able to see it . It reappeared on the same section of the trail this time heading towards the blind. It had a nice little ruff. Can someone convince the grouse to make a reappearance when I lead the Saturday Morning beginner bird walk at SSW? You yourself should be able to convince him if you ask nicely. And thanks, now I don't have to send you a reminder. Have a great walk. As you usually do, with your boundless enthusiasm and knowledge.
