[cayugabirds-l] Woodcocks, Winter Wren on South Hill Trail
I heard three Woodcocks on the South Hill trail above Juniper this morning around 0645-0710h dst. Two were spaced about 150 yards apart in the thick brush below the trail opposite the backyards of the houses on Northview. I heard one definite display flight. I heard the third bird peeting from a field off the trail to the east about a half-mile uptrail from Juniper. On my return trip I heard a Winter Wren singing near the Northview backyards. [cayugabirds-l] Snow geese the noon siren
Have had many large flocks of geese today, nearly all snows, nearly all heading due north most fairly high. Many were east of Union Springs in extra large flocks. While watching a lower flock of snows going NW that had just passed overhead, the noon siren went off. The snows panicked scattered southward for some seconds before regrouping continuing on their way. Amazing to see. Yesterday not a feather was on Factory St. pond. This has become the norm, not the exception. I do occasionally see the kingfisher. Mill pond had a redhead couple 5 or 6 buffles. Lake off Frontenac Park was also empty. Three great black-backed gulls, flew south towards Farley's. [cayugabirds-l] Yard birds - Snow Geese and Redpolls
While I did not notice any geese going overhead last weekend here in Caroline Center last weekend (though I was outside very little) I did have flocks of Snow Geese go over several times today, as well as a Raven circling in a northerly direction, though it is certainly possible that was one of the local birds. With all of the migration excitement I haven't noticed mentioned Redpolls in a while. We still have a flock of better than 100 here. [cayugabirds-l] Spring coming
Further evidence of the inexorable approach of spring: Had up to 20 GRACKLES in our yard munching away, one of which clearly appeared to be a female. (Would females be here now??) Also, in addition to our first SONG SPARROW we reported yesterday, when we arrived home late this afternoon, our first ROBIN of the year was quietly singing (practicing???) on the power line in front of our house.
