[cayugabirds-l] migration on radar again

2013-04-05 Thread nutter.dave
The weather radar is showing night migration again now (4-5 April). What's moving in, or through, or away? Anybody got your ears to the skies? What will be different out there today? Last time there seemed to be an influx of Eastern Phoebes, American Robins, Song Sparrows, some other sparrows (Fox, Chipping, Field), and Common Loon (I've seen several of the latter from East Shore Park and Myers Point the past couple days). But I didn't see or hear about any Savannah Sparrows, Vesper Sparrows, Virginia Rails, Black-Crowned Night-Herons, Caspian Terns, Common Terns, or Purple Martins. Maybe those will show up today.--Dave Nutter

[cayugabirds-l] Female RWBlackbird

2013-04-05 Thread Suan Yong
Saw my FOY female red-winged blackbird this morning at Commonland.

The 100+ ring-necked ducks that were still at the second dam yesterday morning
were gone this morning.

Saw my FOY sapsucker yesterday near the Giles St footbridge - a brilliant male,
yellow belly and all.

PS It would be most unfair to get into the habit of calling the Renwick owl
roost mine, as it was pointed out to me by others (I have tried a few times
looking for the owl on my own, but have failed miserably each time :-).

Arctic Sea Ice - Re: [cayugabirds-l] Woodcocks????

2013-04-05 Thread Christopher T. Tessaglia-Hymes
Bob,

I suspect the cool weather has a lot to do with it. I believe that we are
having a significantly cooler-than-normal spring, due to the Jet Stream being
slightly farther south or much broader than usual. This, as I understand it, is
directly correlated to the reduction in sea ice in the arctic which in turn
creates a weakened pressure differential north of the Jet Stream, allowing the
cold arctic air to spill much farther south than normal.

The following quote of text is from:
http://www.news.cornell.edu/stories/2012/06/arctic-ice-melt-sets-stage-cold-weather:

A diminished latitudinal pressure gradient is linked to a weakening of the
winds associated with the polar vortex and jet stream. Since the polar vortex
normally retains the cold Arctic air masses up above the Arctic Circle, its
weakening allows the cold air to invade lower latitudes.

More links:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2013/mar/25/frozen-spring-arctic-sea-ice-loss

I'm sure there are persons much more familiar with these weather changes, who
can pipe up on this conversation... :-)

Sincerely,
Chris T-H

Re:[cayugabirds-l] Woodcocks???? and Owls

2013-04-05 Thread bilbaker
Ann Mitchell and I went out looking for owls yesterday evening, stating
early enough to heard Woodcocks as well. We found what I will confidently
say were at least 5 individual Woodcock behind the airport near where
Snyder and Mohawk meet. We were in the vicinity till well after 9 but
could not raise a hoot in terms of owls (tried for Saw-whet, Screech and
Barred in that order in various spots along Mohawk and Neimi Rds.)
Afterwards we stopped on Sapsucker Woods Rd at the trail crossing, only
trying for Barred, with the same result...

I have not heard any Woodcock at home, but have only been listening in a
cursory manner as our upper fields, where we regularly have them, are
still snow covered...

[cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Bird Club meeting and speaker dinner - Monday, April 8

2013-04-05 Thread cl...@juno.com
The Cayuga Bird Club will hold its monthly meeting next Monday, April 8, at
7:30 at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, with cookies and conversation at 7:15.
David Nicosia, Warning Coordination Meteorologist for the NOAA/National Weather
Service in Binghamton will present Highways in the Sky - Wind and Weather
Patterns for Bird Migration.
David will talk first about basic weather patterns conducive to migration.
From there he will focus on some very preliminary results of Birdcast and how
birds are postulated to use wind patterns for migration. He will wrap up with a
look at the unusual vagrants associated with Hurricane Sandy, radar evidence of
a large flock of vagrants in the eye of Sandy, and the tools being used
to explain vagrants and migration.

The Club will also be hosting Dave for dinner at Taste of Thai Express
(downtown on Rt. 13N) at 5:30 pm prior to the meeting. This is a great
opportunity for members to meet with Dave and others while enjoying some great
food.
If you would like to join us for dinner, please RSVP to cl...@juno.com by
Monday noon so that reservations can be made.

[cayugabirds-l] Monday April 8 Cayuga Bird Club Clarification.

2013-04-05 Thread Linda Orkin
Responding to some confusion regarding presenters at the April 8 Cayuga Bird
club meeting and realizing that people who may not regularly attend are not
quite sure of the scheduling I offer the following.

Our normally scheduled speakers start at 8 after a one half hour club meeting.

Andy asked for an opportunity to speak to the club about the Finger Lakes Land
Trust at a time when all slots for speakers are already filled

In order to accommodate Andy I decided to start the meeting 5 minutes early,
time that is normally devoted to greetings, make it be just a 15 minute meeting
and then let Andy speak from 7:40 till 8:00 at which time David Nicosia will
give his talk until 9:00.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hope to see you there for both speakers. Or if you can only be there for one,
that's also fine.

[cayugabirds-l] Skydance @ Edwards Lake Cliffs

2013-04-05 Thread Suan Yong
I had some spare time before pickup hockey at The Rink, so I decided to take an
evening walk in the Edwards Lake Cliffs preserve, not really expecting to see
anything special. To my surprise a loud peent emanated from the brush next to
one of the small open areas, and continued while I tried to scan the bushes in
the still decent light, without luck. Just when I thought I'd scared the fellow
into hiding, I heard twittering, and in the clear evening sky appeared a
fluttering form, easily tracked with binoculars with its long clumsy bill as it
continued up, up, and up, and then a quick glide back and forth like a leaf,
tweep-tweep-tweeping as it descended back into the brush. I saw two shows by
one individual and another show by a presumed second individual in the next
field over as I left. The peents started at 7:30 and the first dance at 7:45,
still in decent light. I'll have to bring my camera next time - I think there
was enough light to get a decent shot.
