2014-02-25 Thread Daniel Graham
After being absent for the past week, the SNOWY OWL near Rt. 96a in
Geneva is back as of this morning. It was about 100 yds behind #3579
Rt. 96a. For those making the trek, it's worth swinging by the Geneva
Yacht Club as well since there is a BALD EAGLE that is often soaring
in the vicinity (it was there yesterday around 4pm).

[cayugabirds-l] Song Sparrow

2014-02-25 Thread W. Larry Hymes
Just had our first SONG SPARROW of the year pop into our yard. The
early migrants must be moving in. As I recall, red-winged blackbirds
have been known to show up near the end of February, so before you know
it, they will appear!

There was a flock of 50 almost certainly red-winged blackbirds humming north
over Mays Point on Sat..  They were not starlings or grackles, but I was not
close enough for a positive ID.   S. Fast

[cayugabirds-l] Weekend ducks

2014-02-25 Thread Jay McGowan
Sorry for the late post. After seeing Tim Lenz's EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED
(Common) TEAL at the south end of Seneca Lake on Sunday, Livia and I
checked out the Aythya flock in the southwest corner of Cayuga Lake.
Highlight was dozens of AMERICAN WIGEON (over 70!), two GREEN-WINGED TEAL
(just American, sadly), a male WOOD DUCK sleeping on the ice, Gadwall,
Ruddy Ducks, and the usual Aythya. Long-tailed Ducks and White-winged
Scoters continue on the lake to the north.

I haven't had a chance to post my photos yet, but here are Tim's and
Garrett's lists with photos, if people are curious. As is typical with this
form, it showed a bold, horizontal white stripe on the side, no white
shoulder mark, and bold gold edging on the face.
http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S17163138
http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S17164194

This morning East Shore Park was quiet. The highlight was a group of four
TUNDRA SWANS flying high over the lake heading north.

Re:[cayugabirds-l] Peregrine -thanks

2014-02-25 Thread Dave Nutter
I was walking back from the lake, where I found no new or unusual waterfowl, and was south of the Children's Garden in Cass Park when I decided to have a look at Bradfield Hall, which was in bright sun through cold clear air, i.e. optimal viewing conditions. Using binoculars I saw a suspicious smudge where I've known a Peregrine to perch. With my scope on 60x I could tell it was a raptor, the right size compared to the bricks, with a blue-gray back, broad shoulders tapering to a long tail, and a contrastingly bright white cheek throat compared to the rest of the head. I was very close to home, so I rushed back to my yard, where I can also view Bradfield Hall from some areas. I again saw all the above marks, plus occasionally I could see that the white face was broken by the black sideburn as the bird apparently turned its head. That's when I sent the message. I'm glad a few people on campus got to see it, too. Stuart Krasnoff replied by sending me an excellent photo (much more satisfying for most purposes), and he's going to check whether he can see that ledge from his house, which is a little closer. My house is about 11,000' feet away as I estimate using a ruler against Google Maps. I still haven't figured out how to get their exact as-the-Peregrine-flies distance feature to work. In other bird news, today I also saw my first yard Song Sparrow for the year, perched within the boundary for a lovely binocular view. And in a sign of either spring or weirdness I saw a flock of 8 Northern Flickers in the woods between Union Fields and the old railroad grade west of Cass Park. --Dave NutterOn Feb 25, 2014, at 06:03 PM, cfschm...@aol.com wrote:Hi Dave, Once again, thank you! After a long day in the office, your email sent us flying out to see the Peregrine. Didn't yet have one for the year. What a beauty. Did you truly spot it from your house? Can't believe that. Best, Carol

[cayugabirds-l] Geneva Waterfront - Monday - Canvasback x Redhead, Intersex Mallard

2014-02-25 Thread tigger64
The north end of Seneca Lake is one of my personal-favorite birding
destinations in winter. Jim Tarolli and I hit all the waterfront spots in
Geneva on Monday, coming up with thousands of Redhead and Canada Geese, at
least 100 Canvasback, and an arrival of Wigeon. Birds were at all different
distances from very close to a mile or more out in the lake. Highlight was
a/the hybrid Canvasback x Redhead, essentially looking like the bird
photographed by Chris Wood on Cayuga Lake. Head and bill showed the Canvasback
influence while the back and sides were a touch paler than Redhead and darker
than Canvasback. It was at medium distance and inconspicuous with the 200 or
so Redheads it was with (seen in direct comparison with both species). We
debated various methods of photography but the bird was diving constantly and
we eventually gave up for a number of reasons. The bill had a little blue tint
and in retrospect we should have considered Common Pochard.

Earlier, Jim spotted a bird that we thought possibly an intersex Mallard. A
strong roost flight happened between 5-6pm and the north mile or so of the lake
was a blanket of birds. Some photos of the dusk madness (including three
distant Coots getting airborne), plus diving Redhead, Canvasback, and the
Mallard.
