[cayugabirds-l] Harrier

2014-03-15 Thread Carol Keeler
Just had a fly over from a male Northern Harrier! I haven't seen one in my
neighborhood since a house was built on the lot next door, so maybe in 13
years. Last time I saw one locally it was on the polo field in Skaneateles in
winter several years ago. It flew back across Rt. 20 to the farm there. Nice
way to start the day!

Thank you for subscribing to the hourly Needs Alert for Tompkins. The
report below shows observations of species you have not seen in Tompkins,
based on your eBird observations. View this alert on the web at
http://ebird.org/ebird/alert/summary?sid=SN10503
NOTE: all sightings are UNCONFIRMED unless indicated

Common Eider (Somateria mollissima) (1)
- Reported Mar 15, 2014 10:45 by Jeff Doyle
- Taughannock Park, Tompkins, New York
- Map:
http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8t=pz=13q=42.5437652,-76.5948343ll=42.5437652,-76.5948343
- Checklist: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S17442350
- Comments: One bird, approximately 100 yards south of the swimming beach
in the south cove. I had a scope, so I did get long, excellent looks at the
bird, over a period of 20-30 minutes. I don't have a camera capable of
getting a picture, however. The bird was mostly a nondescript brown, with a
warmer brown head. The most distinctive marks were bright white forewings
visible as a line on the side (visible with the naked eye and binoculars),
also very visible as the bird extended its wings as it dove. There was no
other white on the bird. The other distinctive characteristic was the head,
with a sloping bill that (through the scope) had a faint yellow-greenish
color. This was difficult to see, but the shape of the head was not like
any other duck I've seen here (though I've seen Eiders in Scandinavia);
probably closest to a canvasback in the slopy shape. This bird, however,
was more stout, with a short neck relative to the overall dimensions. A
small flock of red breasted mergansers arrived as I watched this duck, and
I noted that they were as large or slightly larger than it (though it was
distinctly larger than the buffleheads closer to shore. I spent some time
looking through Peterson to see if there was anything else that it could
possibly be, but nothing had the white patch, head shape, size, etc.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Harrier

2014-03-15 Thread Antonia Saxon
Don't know where you are, but there's at least one male Northern Harrier
in Trumansburg. Saw it sitting on a limb over Trumansburg Creek one
afternoon in February, right across from Gimme Coffee (where it drew a
small crowd), then spotted it again two days ago cruising low over a
field along Congress St. Extension. Don't know how big their territories
are, thinking these two sightings are the same individual.

To clarify my last message with a subjectless sentence, *I* am at
Taughannock, but no sign of an eider so far. Needless to say King would be
much more likely than Common here, so it will be interesting to see if Jeff

[cayugabirds-l] Dryden Lake

2014-03-15 Thread Susan Fast
I headed for the Dryden Lake area this afternoon in hopes of finding my first
grackle of the year.  The Lake has open water at both ends, plus the long pond.
 Waterfowl found:
Canada goose    34
Mallard  5
Redhead   3 males
Canvasback  1 female
Common merganser  2 pair
Hooded merganser    2 pair

The Trail is walkable, but with many icy spots.  I did 3 miles on it, but no
grackle.
I stopped along Purvis Rd. on the way home and hit the jackpot.  Along with
many ROBINS, and hundreds of STARLINGS, there were 75+ GRACKLES, and an equal
number of male RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS.  To top the day off, there was a
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK at the top of Grove School Rd., perched 10' from the
roadedge.  May be one of the residents.
