[cayugabirds-l] Merlins Mating Downtown Ithaca
This was yesterday evening between 5:15-5:30pm, from the front porch of our apartment. We were observing the birds across our street, in the backyards of houses bordered by Hudson, Pleasant, and Prospect St. We heard a very fast, high pitched Ki-ki-ki-ki-ki-ki- (thought woodpecker at first). Scanned to see the two birds in an oak tree for one attempt. The female flew off into a near by spruce about 30-40 yards away immediately after. After about 5 more minutes, we saw the male fly in the direction of the female with very fast, fluttering wing beats, calling, and hooking up with the female for a second time, then he returned to the oak tree, at which point the observation window had to close. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Eastern Towhee
Carolina Wrens can be heard to sing at almost any time and quite amazingly they seem to have survived this brutal winter, at least the ones I know about did. Perhaps the one that has been at the Lab of O feeders is the one that now sings a ringing song on the north side of the building for the past two weekends of bird walks there. [cayugabirds-l] Plastic in Robins nest and Lunch walk
Hi all, I have been seeing fairly large pieces of plastic bags/ sheets in the American Robins nest last few years and I have been wanting to survey the robin nests and plastics in them. This year I have so far seen only one nest with plastic of the dimension of approximately 10 inches x 5 to 6 inches. I am curious to know where they put plastic sheet. Is it above the mud plasters or do they integrate it into mud plaster. Also If it is above the mud plaster how the rain water is collected or drained. So this is the best time to locate Robin nests. If you have one near your house or see one somewhere and has plastic in it, could you please email me the location and size of the plastic if you find any plastic in it? About lunch walk - I took a lunch walk today afternoon hoping for an eagle or two. All I found was a few Turkey Vultures, three migrating Red-tailed Hawks and two Killdeer, besides Chickadees and nut hatches. [cayugabirds-l] Phoebe and others
A phoebe arrived this a.m. Will it stay? None stayed here last year. Two TV's circling over the corn fields at the intersection of Seneca Rd and Kingtown Rd (TBurg) about 1:30 today. Yesterday, two turkeys on Savercool Rd just west of our barns. I stopped the truck and they just poked along until they found a hole in the brush that they could escape into. Bluebirds and House Sparrows trying out the nest boxes. There are about 16 boxes but all the birds seem to like the same box. Two days ago, there was a Caro. Wren singing here. On and off for the past 2 months, there have been 1 or 2 C. Wrens coming to our feeders. We never saw any signs of succumbing to bad weather except for the time last week when they got shut into the garage. They were not there long, and gratefully flew out when the doors were opened later in the day. A couple of years ago, a C. Wren perished in the garage after getting shut in. Two robins acting very territorial. Several birds collecting nesting materials. Happy Spring. Go bird! [cayugabirds-l] Volunteers needed for morning bird study
Enjoy early morning springtime walks while collecting data for a noble cause! *VOLUNTEERS NEEDED for the Cornell Campus Bird Strike Monitoring Program--Spring 2014* The Cayuga Bird Club's Conservation Action Committee and the Cornell Student Bird Club are conducting a survey on bird collisions with buildings on the Cornell campus during the spring migration--but we can't succeed without your help. The goal of the Cornell Campus Bird Strike Monitoring Program is to gather data to determine which buildings are having the most problems with bird strikes. The data collected will allow us to investigate solutions and mitigation measures for existing problems and help design bird-friendlier buildings in the future. Volunteers are needed to make 40-60 minute morning survey walks on campus beginning at 8 am. *PLEASE* sign up for one morning or as often as you can.
