[cayugabirds-l] PALM WARBLER, Sapsucker Woods, Owen's platform boardwalk

2014-04-14 Thread Wesley M. Hochachka
Hi everyone,

I had a rather surprising first-parulid-of-year-in-Sapsucker Woods just now:
a PALM WARBLER. I saw the bird in the clump of alder shrubs/trees through
which the boardwalk cuts, leading to the platform over the water to the south
of Kip's Barn (the big white barn north of the Lab of O building). I only
briefly saw the bird, seconds after my attention was drawn to a warbler chip
note. The bird flew up at about eye level and while I only had maybe 2 seconds
of clear view (half of that wasted while my brain processed the fact that I was
not looking at a Yellow-rumped Warbler), I'm reasonably confident that it was a
brown-form Palm Warbler. I think that I heard the bird chipping nearby
subsequently just to the west of the boardwalk, so it might linger in this
general area for a while.

[cayugabirds-l] Swamp Sparrows SSW

2014-04-14 Thread Chris R. Pelkie
Numerous singing SWAMP SPARROWs in the field/marsh east of 3rd parking lot.
They were sitting high so easy to see their fresh plumage in the rising sun.

I heard some ‘quarter-clicking’ and low grunty sounds but could not say if it
was a Rail or not. It was near me and made many of the grunts but no clear
resolution of what it was in the time I had to spend.

[cayugabirds-l] Fw: Cayuga Bird Club Meeting and speaker dinner Mon., April 14

2014-04-14 Thread cl...@juno.com
A last reminder about tonight's : Cayuga Bird Club meeting at 7:30 at the
Cornell Lab of Ornithology, with cookies and conversation
at 7:15.
Saw-whet Owls: The Cute Factor Aids Science: 206,000 Birds Banded by
Insomniac Banders Reveal Migration Patterns and Regional Reproductive Success
Speakers: Dr. John L. Confer, Biology Department, Ithaca College; Dr. Leann
Kanda, co-analyst, Biology Department, Ithaca College
The Northern Saw-whet Owl is widely distributed, and an intensive banding
effort provides a data trove for this tiny raptor. Banding records combined
with GIS analyses reveal exceptional detail about migration patterns in eastern
and central North America . This, with the ability to determine age classes by
plumage, allows analysis of temporal/spatial patterns of reproductive success
for breeding populations in different portions of North America. Dr. Confer
will talk about his own banding effort and how his data, combined with that of
other banders, has helped answer many questions about this little owl.
And there is still room for any members who would like to come to dinner with
John and his wife Karen before the meeting at 5:30
at Taste of Thai Express. I'll be calling to make reservations at 3 pm this
afternoon.

See you all soon.

[cayugabirds-l] Chipping Sparrow and others

2014-04-14 Thread Bill Mcaneny
Our first Chipping Sparrow showed up at the feeders this afternoon. It was
scratching around under the sunflower seed feeder. Not long after, a
Sharpshinned Hawk cruised thru the yard but made no attacks that I could
see. This a.m. a Flicker flew away as I drove past the barns. In other
news, things in bloom include Lenten Rose, Scylla, and one daffodil that may
pop at any moment. Snowdrops and croci are on the way out, having served
their purpose of announcing the arrival of fine weather. A few minutes ago,
the fine weather blew hard thru here with a big dump of rain. So it goes.

[cayugabirds-l] owls--SFO trip scouting

2014-04-14 Thread Marc Devokaitis
Hi Folks,

I fully realize the quixotic nature of owl-location--magnified, perhaps, in
one's asking for such information from others...nevertheless

Seen or heard any good (nocturnal) owls lately? Especially interested in
places within 10-15 minute drive from the Lab. Individual birds that enjoy
30 degree weather and high winds and sleet are preferred.

Thanks,
Marc

[cayugabirds-l] falcons no longer hawks

2014-04-14 Thread job121830
Thisfrom Hawkwatch International; sort of a tweat, if you will.Falcons No Longer Hawks! If you're expecting this announcement to be followed by a text version of the classic April Fools shout, sorry, this is for real.If you're still incredulous, just have a gander at the newSibley Guideto Birdsand see if the Falcons are stillButeoadjacent; the taxonomy is achangin'.The American Birding Associationexplains the adjustmentnicely:Recent genetic studies found that falcons are much more closely relatedto songbirds than to other “hawks”—quite a jolt to our traditional belief.According to this research, falcons' closest relatives are a group (or clade) consisting of the parrots and the passerines. The American Ornithologist's Union has moved the Falcon Family out of the Hawks and placedthem between the Parrots and the Woodpeckers on their North Americanchecklist. Only time will tell, but it is likely that our forays into the geneticwonderland will soon reveal even moresurprises.
