Good Morning, I also have the same issue. I thought I had seen where someone had suggested putting fishing line on the boxes a certain distance (don’t know specifics) wide and from the entrance and perch that detracted the sparrows because they did not fold their wings as much as a bluebird thus limiting the box to be used by bluebirds. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Bluebird in the Backyard
Yes, I've tried the fishing line strategy. It didn't deter the House Sparrows one bit. I try to keep taking out the House Sparrow nests, but that doesn't slow them down much. If anyone has a solution to the House Sparrow vs. Bluebird nest box problem, I'd like to hear about it, too. [cayugabirds-l] Crows, Eagle
A pair of Crows was gathering nest material on the bank outside my kitchen window this morning. Plenty of other Crows around, of course, but one that I saw downtown this afternoon is worth noting, because it was chasing a first year Bald Eagle over the Unitarian Church. -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] bluebirds vs house sparrows
WE have about 16 nest boxes on poles around our field. Initially they were for bluebirds, and then the tree swallows arrived. Our strategy: the nest boxes are erected in pairs: one for the bluebirds, one for the tree swallows. House sparrows may move into one box in a pair, but not both. (They don't like house sparrows for neighbors either.) Same for tree swallows. By the time the bluebirds come around, there are still empty boxes to choose from. Last year, at least 3 boxes contained bluebird families. Fair enough. Try it, it may provide housing for everyone. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Red-throated Loon photo op
The RED-THROATED LOON was still on Cayuga Inlet this evening resting near the Treman Park boat ramp. Other birds of note were a GREAT BLUE HERON standing on a narrow ice shelf along the far side, 2 southbound TREE SWALLOWS, about a thousand COMMON GRACKLES in flocks moving south or east and several hundred probable Red-winged Blackbirds in similar flights. Cayuga Inlet has been mostly cleared of ice, at least partly by crew boat coaches, all the way to the jetties, but then there's a mile and half of ice, so maybe the various ducks will stay on the inlet until crews start up and disturb them. --Dave Nutter On Mar 25, 2015, at 09:31 AM, Dave Nutter nutter.d...@me.com wrote: About an hour ago, 8:30am, from the Farmers' Market in Ithaca I saw a winter plumage RED-THROATED LOON in Cayuga Inlet. [cayugabirds-l] New eBird project – Avicaching!
Hello Cayuga birders, I’m writing to invite you all to participate in a new eBird project taking place in Tompkins and Cortland Counties – Avicaching! A take on Geocaching, where people go to specific GPS coordinates to find hidden items, this is the eBird version: going to specific GPS coordinates and recording the birds that you see and hear there. With the birds pouring back into our area for spring, we hope that you’ll go birding, submit your observations to eBird, and maybe win free Zeiss binoculars! All you need is an eBird account and a yearning to go birding. The purpose of this project is to gather data in these two counties that currently have few eBird submissions, allowing us to improve our analyses of data in this area. If the motivation to help improve the quality of the citizen science data in eBird isn’t enough to motivate you to Avicache, we are also offering a prize for participating! Every person who submits at least one eligible eBird checklist from an Avicache location will be entered in a drawing for a brand new pair of Zeiss binoculars. The more that you participate, the higher the chances of winning the binoculars! The first day of the project is this coming Friday, 27 March, continuing until the last Thursday in May – the 31st. Each Friday-Thursday week will be a discrete scoring period, so the games begin this Friday! There are 50 locations across Tompkins and Cortland Counties that are a part of this project, and during the 9 weeks of this project, eBirding done at these Avicaches will award you points that contribute to your Avicaching score. Learn more about the locations, scoring, and the entire project on the official site: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/avicaching/. There are details about the objectives and how you can participate, a map with all of the locations, and much more! Please don’t hesitate to send any questions that you might have my way, and I hope to see you out in the field! [cayugabirds-l] Stewart Ave Redtail
Yesterday afternoon I stopped by the Stewart Avenue bridge over Fall Creek to check out the redtail nest, which was occupied by one brooding red-tailed hawk. One week ago, there was no bird but plenty of fresh evergreen boughs (spruce?). Looking east (upstream), it is along the north cliff. At night, when I arrived home around 9:15pm, a flap of wings drew my attention towards a bird flying from about 20-feet up a spruce tree away into the distance. The small-medium size and hummingbird-like flight suggested woodcock or snipe: are they know to roost in trees? [cayugabirds-l] Ross's Goose flyby - Myers
There has been constant northward movement of Snow Goose flocks over the middle of the lake at Myers this morning. Like Ken, I was fortunate to pick out a lone Ross's Goose in one skein, and and it was a great, albeit brief look, as the birds were all flying fairly low over the water. [cayugabirds-l] multitudes of snow geese, Town of Covert
Tried to send this as soon as I got home, but just found a message from Lyris saying it had bounced because the original subject line referred to South Seneca County and Lyris said that sounded like spam for a vacation home rental! So blame Lyris for it being send so late ... On my way home from work today, about 6:15, by far the most common birds seen in the Town of Covert were many thousands of snow geese, carpeting the majority of fields adjacent to Route 96, as well as the fields next to Halls Corners Road west of there, and flying low overhead in swirling and disorganized groups everywhere. Maybe 10% as many Canada Geese. In a few fields there also were large flocks of ducks, all Mallards that I saw but I didn't check that many, and also did not have a scope.
