[cayugabirds-l] Red-throated loon earlier today
After dinner, went for a walk by the Treman Marina. We didn't have binoculars, but I didn't need them as the red-throated loon was swimming in the channel of the marina very close and was quite easy to see. Must be the same one reported this morning and last week by the Farmer's Market. -liisa Liisa Mobley Sent from my iPhone -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

But our patience paid off as presently it decided to come in close to fish, sometimes surfacing 10 feet away! It did eventually swim away, however. Glad to hear it came back for others to enjoy. [cayugabirds-l] No. Shrike and Rough-legged Hawks
?Hi All, There was a No. Shrike on Mohawk Road just west the houses around 9.30 am. Gave us a good look for long time. There were three Rough-legged Hawk on airport property two were brownish and the third one was slightly darker morph. Also three times Eurasian Wigeon has been reported along the Cayuga lake, first one at 9.07 from Ladoga, second from Long Point state park around 10.39 am and the third sighting was from Spit south of Aurora bluffs around noon sleeping. So I am not sure if there are more than Eurasian Wigeons along the lake or it the same wigeon kept moving north as people saw it at different times. [cayugabirds-l] RTLoon @ Treman Marina, Siskin @ SSW
Our SFO group saw from Jetty Woods across the inlet a/the RED-THROATED LOON fishing just off the mouth of the Treman Marina, very close, along with a nice assortment of waterfowl (including a lone snow goose in very bad shape: injured back and bill). A/the BONAPARTE'S GULL continues in the inlet. Earlier at Sapsucker Woods we saw a/the lone PINE SISKIN from the road hanging out with goldfinches at a watering hole. [cayugabirds-l] Eurasian Wigeons
Susan Danskin, Diane Morton, Ken Kemphus, and I drove up the lake today on what we dubbed a “Ross’s Goose Chase”. Ultimately we did find a single Ross’s in the massive flock of some tens of thousands of Snow Geese on the ice and in the water to the north of the old Towpath Machine Shop in the Village of Cayuga. Susan spotted the first candidate around noon, but we were never able, as a group, to get on it. On our way back, later in the afternoon, we ran into Jay and Livia at Mud Lock. They had just come from watching a Ross’s in the same area we had been looking earlier. We returned and rather quickly found (refound?) the little guy. The highlight of the day, however, were the two EURASIAN WIGEONS that we encountered. Ken picked the first one out as we were looking west from Ladoga. It was fairly close in, the lake was nearly calm, and the light was over our shoulders. So the viewing was great! The second Eurasian appeared with two American Wigeons close to shore along Lake Road just south of Long Point State Park. It was swimming slowly north, and we lost sight of it behind some houses and trees. We later heard that Jay and Livia refound it farther north, just before the Aurora bluffs. In the afternoon we heard, again from Jay, that an apparent third Eurasian Wigeon was on or along the ice south of Mud Lock. It sounds like a three-Eurasian Wigeon day. Other highlights were at least 20 Horned Grebes, several in near-breeding plumage in Aurora Bay (seen from the bluffs), and the sky-filling flocks of thousands and thousands of Snow Geese.
