Re: [cayugabirds-l] N. Parula??? [was Prairie Warbler???]

2017-04-21 Thread Dave Nutter
Reports of rare birds (including those within range but early or late by the
calendar) do not get incorporated into eBird's database so that they can be
searched by species until they are reviewed and deemed credible, which can take
a few days. But you can see rare bird reports before they are reviewed by
subscribing to eBird's Rare Bird Alerts for any county or state.

The reports that I saw were by Chris Wood seen & heard along the old railroad
grade east of Monkey Run Road (south), and by Brad Walker heard between the
Woodleton Boardwalk and Sapsucker Woods Rd. Chris heads up the eBird program
and I believe is one of the reviewers for Tompkins County. He also provided a
detailed description of the bird's plumage & song so that any reviewer would
recognize it. Anyway when he gets around to it, it will surely be added to the
database. Brad, another expert birder who works at the Lab of O, included a
description of the song he heard which was also enough to ID the bird.

[cayugabirds-l] Brown Thrasher

2017-04-21 Thread W. Larry Hymes
Our foy BROWN THRASHER showed up at 5:45pm. It was rooting in the layer
of mulch along our garden fence line.

For those curious about the PIGEON that had been in our yard for the
past couple of days, I finally caught the bird and took it to the Janet
Swanson (Cornell) Wildlife Rehab. Center off of Snyder Hill Rd. To the
untrained eye the bird looked healthy. However, it couldn't fly very
far, so we assumed it had a damaged wing. When examined by a
veterinarian, it turns out the bird was emaciated. When I left the
center, a rehab person was holding it in a towel and letting it munch
away on a cup of seed. It was a racing pigeon. There was no charge to
drop the bird off with them. I felt compelled to make a donation!

[cayugabirds-l] Broad-wings

2017-04-21 Thread Geo Kloppel
Out in the yard pretending to garden, I looked up in response to the call of a
Broad-winged Hawk, and saw what I always do at about this time in April. A nice
Broad-wing, fairly low, making what I interpret as a territorial flight. After
sailing about and calling for several minutes he(?) dropped down into the Maple
Avenue ravine (traditional nest area). Five minutes later he was up soaring and
calling again, and a second Broad-wing appeared. Maybe a mate, or perhaps a
challenger...

Re: [cayugabirds-l] N. Parula??? [was Prairie Warbler???]

2017-04-21 Thread Alicia Plotkin
Was wondering where these lucky folks were birding? No Parula's are
showing up in eBird in NYS except for a posting from Sullivan County,
haven't seen anything posted to this list, either. An eBird listing
might require moderator approval but would hope that was happening
quickly this time of year, when arrival times are so variable and many
exceptions occur.
