[cayugabirds-l] Osprey on nest, briefly

2018-04-25 Thread Dave Nutter
Yesterday afternoon shortly before 5pm I was on the Cayuga Waterfront Trail
where it crosses Fall Creek on a green suspension bridge between the end of
Pier Road and the western corner of Renwick Wildwood. There’s a pole with an
Osprey platform just west of that bridge (it’s not on the Osprey Trail map, and
I don’t know its name). If I recall correctly, last year it looked like a nest
there would be occupied (sticks being brought, Osprey frequently standing on
them), but then it was abandoned. I wondered if there was too much human
activity directly underneath. It’s a popular fishing spot. This year on my
sporadic observations I had not seen any Osprey at this platform until
yesterday afternoon, when I saw an Osprey glide in and alight on the nest. I
had just enough time to think, “Wow, I must tell Candace!” before a second
Osprey followed, but instead of perching, it descended toward the bird on the
nest talons first. The occupant vacated pronto, flying upstream, while the
evictor continued westward without even touching down. Maybe there are
established Ospreys who don’t want certain other nearby platforms to be
occupied.

[cayugabirds-l] Nashville W and BH Vireo in Brooktondale

2018-04-25 Thread Sandy Podulka
Had a NASHVILLE WARBLER and a BLUE-HEADED VIREO this afternoon in
Brooktondale, mixed in with the billions of Ruby-crowned Kinglets and
Yellow-rumped Warblers foraging in the mist around our ponds. One
Golden-crowned Kinglet was here yesterday, and a few PINE SISKINS persist.

Happy Spring,

[cayugabirds-l] Bluebirds checking out my nest box

2018-04-25 Thread Sandra Lynn Babcock
I was absolutely elated this morning to hear a bluebird singing lustily from
the top perch of my feeder station. That's the first bluebird I've ever seen
in my yard in the four years I've been living in Ellis Hollow. And as I
watched, it flew off to investigate out one of my bluebird houses. Fingers
crossed!

On a related note, I was wondering if bluebirds have started to nest in the
houses lined up alongside Turkey Hill Road. Does anyone know?

[cayugabirds-l] new arrivals FOY

2018-04-25 Thread Ken Haas
This morning I was happy to welcome back two FOY Rose-breasted Grosbeaks and a
singing Brown Thrasher to my yard West of Mecklenberg. Still hanging around are
R.C.Kinglets and G.C.Kinglets, and a few more Purple Finches. Looks like I've
got to stock up on sunflower seeds!

[cayugabirds-l] FOY Northern Orioles

2018-04-25 Thread Nari Mistry
Yesterday at about 8:30 am I heard our first of the year Baltimore
Oriole song in our backyard. Although it seemed to be flying around
singing & establishing it's territory, I could not see it. Can't tell if
this is particularly early, as every year I see the first male orioles
exactly as the Japanese Quince flowers open. This year the flowers are
obviously behind schedule.

This morning I saw another(?) Oriole fly off from the tree near the
Dodge Rd. bridge, as I approached around the curve.

A Pileated Woodpecker went around the backyard this morning.  This is
also the time when two males show up and compete showing off on adjacent
trees. One has been occasionally coming to our suet feeder this winter.

[cayugabirds-l] osprey on hogs hole platfrom

2018-04-25 Thread Nancy Cusumano
This morning as I drove by, there was an osprey sitting on the platform
that is just north of hogs hole, but south of the Hangar, right along rt
89. There is often red tail who hunts from that platform but this is the
first time I've seen an osprey on it. It also looked like there was a new
stick or maybe sticks on it. I will keep a watch, as I drive past 2x a day.

[cayugabirds-l] Update on Next Week's Potential Migration "Surge"

2018-04-25 Thread David Nicosia
All,

Looking at the three most reliable medium range models, the GFS, European
and Canadian models, we continue to see a large high pressure system
setting up over the southeast U.S Monday night. This high extends from the
surface up through up through 10,000 feet and with its clockwise flow,
Monday night will see a southeasterly flow across the Gulf of Mexico
focusing on Texas and the west Gulf States in the lowest 5000-7000 feet.
Then the flow curves more southerly and then southwesterly by the time it
reaches the northeast U.S. So Tuesday May 1st may see a lot of arrivals
along with temperatures in the 70s and even low 80s in some areas. The bulk
of the migration Monday night will be west of NY state but there is a good
potential for southerly overshoots especially in western and central NY. I
expect a lot of our earlier warbler species, Baltimore orioles,
rose-breasted grosbeaks, and maybe a few early scarlet tanagers and indigo
buntings to arrive among many others.

Then for Tuesday night, the winds in the lowest 5000-7000 feet will come
right across the Gulf of Mexico up the west side of the Appalachians into
NY state. It looks like more migrants for western/central NY with this flow
pattern. May 2nd should be an awesome day with temperature pushing 80 in
many areas and a lot of new arrivals. I don't see fallout conditions just
new arrivals.

Then Wednesday night, things get more complicated, the european model
brings a cold front through which will intercept this southerly flow making
the 3rd potentially interesting. However, the GFS and Canadian are slower
with this front. The Canadian brings it through Thursday night to Friday
the 4th, the GFS holds it off until the weekend of the 5th and 6th. So that
is where the uncertainty lies, when does this cold front come through and
end this early neotropical migrant surge into NY state. The European closes
the window earliest, late on the 2nd, the GFS keeps the fun going all next
week.

Bottom line, we are looking at May 1st and most of May 2nd as good days for
new arrivals with a cold front coming through the late on the 2nd to the
5th to drop down migrants.

More updates to follow as things become clearer...

Go to birdcast for awesome information up to this weekend. I am looking out
beyond the time period of birdcast of which weather predictions get much
more complicated, making the more detailed information that birdcast
provides impossible...
