Re: [cayugabirds-l] Salt Point ospreys fledging

2018-07-18 Thread Sally Eller
The osprey nest south of Canoga has been active all summer with almost
always a parent sighted there. They seem to be feeding. To my surprise, the
nest on Ernsberger Road, near Knapp Winery, is also active. It had appeared
abandoned in June but is not active, I think there are chicks. The nest at
Dean's Cove Boat Launch remains inactive. I haven't seen a bird there all
spring/summer. These nests are all on NYSEG poles.

The three osprey young at the Salt Point nest in Lansing will probably
fledge today. It's fantastic to watch them get their first air and fly!
There are also three young in the nearby Myers Hill nest, which are about a
week or so behind the Salt Point trio. Many of the other area nests will
fledge soon also. Enjoy!

Re: [cayugabirds-l] North Spenser Marsh

2018-07-18 Thread Geo Kloppel
The North Spencer Marsh (Tioga County, Town of Spencer) is private, but much of
it can be viewed from Michigan Hollow Road - a circumstance that sometimes
leads to confusion with the Michigan Hollow Marsh (Tompkins County, Town of
Danby), five miles distant. It can also be confused with the “Headwater Marsh”
(Wiegand & Eames), which is the source of Cayuga Inlet. The Headwater Marsh is
only a mile north of the North Spencer Marsh, but they are separated by the
Saint Lawrence / Susquehanna watershed divide.

Has the North Spenser Marsh been opened up for viewing birds? I am seeing many
reports of a Least Bittern and others. Thanks all.
