[cayugabirds-l] Share Your Stories (or Poetry, etc.)

2020-04-14 Thread Suan Hsi Yong
Greetings,

Since I took over editorship of the Cayuga Bird Club newsletter last fall,
the job has largely been on auto-pilot, with plenty of club project and
trip reports to fill the pages. For the coming issue(s), however, I
anticipate having plenty of space to fill, and am welcoming contributions
from club members and other area birders.

For "timely" bird reports, it seems better to post directly to this list.
Instead, I'd like to solicit birding stories from the past, either locally
or farther afield. A memorable encounter with an unusual species, a summary
of your "best birding day ever", or anything you like. A couple paragraphs
should suffice. Photos are always nice but not necessary. Please send
contributions to cbcedit...@gmail.com by April 27 for inclusion in the next
newsletter.

Another idea could be poetry, as we've already seen a couple posted here.
Feel free to contribute those as well, or anything else you think will be
of interest to other clubmembers.

Thanks.

Suan Yong

[cayugabirds-l] Fwd: [VTBIRD] BBS cancelled

FYI...I hadn’t heard this and am somewhat surprised.

This was announced on Friday, but I learned today that the entire North
American Breeding Bird Survey was cancelled for 2020. I suspect this has
never happened before, so although it is understandable in these crazy
times, I was shocked to hear it. It was announced on Ornithology Exchange—it's
not showing on the USGS BBS website yet.

[cayugabirds-l] Sapsucker Woods, Tues 4/14

2020-04-14 Thread Mark Chao
I saw a BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER in the Fuller Wetlands in Sapsucker Woods a
little past midday on Tuesday. I also saw a COMMON RAVEN flying by,
eastbound. I looked for Vesper Sparrows around the far parking lot and
roadsides, but I didn’t find any.

(Over the past couple of weeks, foot traffic around Sapsucker Woods has
been much heavier than usual, especially with a lot more joggers and
families enjoying the trails. It’s not easy to completely avoid
overlapping airspaces unless one stays along the road and parking lots.)
