[cayugabirds-l] Spotting scope question

2020-04-27 Thread Peter Saracino
Hi folks. I'm in the market for a relatively inexpensive (but halfway
decent)spotting scope (straight barrel), and am wondering if anyone out
there can recommend one.
Thank you.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Of Unleashed Dogs and Waterthrushes

2020-04-27 Thread Linda Orkin
This sure stirred up a can of worms. I remember one person once was
mentioning how his dog had flushed out snipe. And another woman at Monkey
run reassuring me her dog who was racing through the woods wouldn’t bother
us he only loved hunting and killing chipmunks. As a dog owner who always
has her dog leashed it would be impossible for me to even keep count of the
number of “perfect “ unleashed dogs have suddenly completely gone off
script and approached my dog with much aggressive posturing. I feel a total
anxiety attack while walking my dog and I have never been afraid of dogs.
It is inconceivable tinned how people can do totally disregard both signs
and the comfort of others. And the impact of their canines on the woodland
creatures off trail. I am wondering if the unleashed dogs who behave
always stay at their owners sides.

Linda Orkin living near Sapsucker woods. And also witnessing dogs there.

And having people come very close to my face to retrieve their growling
dogs.

2020-04-27 Thread khmo
Hi gang! So nice to see the reports from you lowlanders as it will be a
bit before the Thrasher's, Catbirds and more come uphill.

May we ask a general favor and suggest that all posts contain a
signature block telling us where you live? Need not be specific. We
know a few but so many are guesswork and some of you have moved from
locs we knew a few decades back.

Many thanks in advance.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Of Unleashed Dogs and Waterthrushes

2020-04-27 Thread Deb Grantham
Yes, this is an on-going problem. My dogs are always on leash when not in the
house or a contained area (such as an indoor arena where they are the only dogs
running loose).

Right now, one of my dogs is a German shepherd. I have had German shepherds for
decades and mine would NEVER have done what was described in this email. It's
the owner and what the owner allows and trains (or doesn't train) for. I would
just nail one of my dogs if they did something like that (but never abuse my
dogs).

On the other hand, mine are on leash.

But many, many dog owners seem to think that everyone loves their dogs and all
dogs and that "dogs are born to be free" and all that crap. They can't bring
themselves to constrain, restrain, or limit their dogs in any way. I don't take
my dogs to the dog park anymore because there are some macho men who think it's
cool and exciting when 5 of their pitbull, shepherds, and mastiffs gang up on
my one shepherd. Probably the same owners who let their dog jump on you.

I'm really sorry that this is happening to people and that certain breeds have
gotten bad reputations because of the owners. Shepherds and pitbulls want to
please and are protective, so it's easy to train them in certain behaviors or
allow certain behaviors without correction. It's not the dog, it's the owners.

Again, I'm sorry.

Deb

Meredith,
Thank you for you dog "notes". I have seen many dogs in Sapsucker woods of
late, where the signs clearly state "no dogs". In this case, even if the dogs
are leashed, they shouldn't be there. The unleashed dog issue has gotten worse
in the past year or so based on my own walking experiences in Monkey run and
other local trails.

Otherwise,
a) you have no way to convey to someone who fears dogs just what sort of

Despite the drenching rain today, I did my daily jog.
Around the trails of six-mile creek I passed two groups with dogs.
The first dog came a-leapin' at my thigh, against my wish.
The owners said their sorries as they feigned to tend its leash.

The second dog, also unleashed, was sniffing as it roamed,
an area where a Waterthrush had surveyed for a home.
Meanwhile from way up in the tree the Waterthrush did sing,
O'er heavy rain and rushing creek the melody did ring.
The song seemed more insistent, although I can't be sure,
As if announcing to the world, "hey dog, get outta here!"
Both dog and man soon left the scene, no harm it seems inflicted.
As spring rolls on I hope to see if nesting was affected.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Of Unleashed Dogs and Waterthrushes

2020-04-27 Thread Donna Lee Scott
Rude, nasty, or clueless people and their off-leash dogs are an increasingly
big problem everywhere.

It is our main public problem at Salt Point. Lansing has clearly posted “dogs
must be on leash” law.
A Lansing resident and former judge who is a Commissioner at NY state parks
has also said it’s one of the biggest problems that state parks face, even
though there’s posted laws about keeping dogs on leashes.

It is starting to happen in Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario, too, but the
people seem better mannered than here in “Wild West” USA.

People can’t seem to leave dogs at home anymore. And those who have little
knowledge about nesting & displaying birds have no idea about how their dog is
naturally inclined to gobble up birds & other critters.

Many just Think of these parks as big dog runs where the law does not apply to
them. 

even more irresponsible to have an unleashed dog in public right now.

2020-04-27 Thread Sandy Podulka
I thought that with Covid-19 restrictions all
dogs are supposed to be on leashes when out of
the house (I assume out of one's yard). A dog
rushing up to someone else can carry virus to
them (albeit this is a low risk), so it is even
more irresponsible to have an unleashed dog in public right now.

Sorry Robin, I apologize for singling you out. You belong to a lucky cohort of
dog owners with good dogs.
But, even your well behaved dog really should be leashed in natural or wild
areas, especially during mating, nesting, birthing and fledging seasons.
Otherwise,
a) you have no way to convey to someone who fears dogs just what sort of
behavior they can expect from your particular dog, and
b) your unleashed dog will tell other owners that it is OK for their dogs to be
unleashed, no matter your argument or their dog.
Please, all owners of good dogs, think of this problem from a multitude of
points of view. Think of it as an environmental responsibility.
Thank you, Meredith

[cayugabirds-l] Birdy morning

2020-04-27 Thread Carol Keeler
Birds were everywhere this morning. I went from 4 to 10 White Throated
sparrows. There were the usuals too, Cardinals, lots of goldfinches, Song
Sparrows, Blue Jays, House Finches, a pair of Purple Finches and tons of the
cursed blackbirds. A couple days ago I had a Brown Thrasher which I rarely
have visit. I have tree swallows and Bluebirds checking out nest boxes. Still
waiting for my Catbirds and Orioles. The Titmice and Chickadees show up a bit
later in the day, Blue Jays too.
Right now I have hundreds of mostly Grackles in my back yard. Any way to get
rid of them? I don’t mind a few, but this is ridiculous.

[cayugabirds-l] On the home front

2020-04-27 Thread Donna Lee Scott
A Louisiana Waterthrush perched briefly in my river birch while I looked out
the window! Couldn’t find it by my little stream when I then looked there a few
minutes later.

Regular visiting Field Sparrow eating seeds under front yard bush...
Along with 4 White Throated Sparrows & other usuals.
1 WT, instead of having tan throat & tan head stripes, has all gray in those
areas.
It is the same gray color as the breast has on White Throated Sparrows.
2 of the others have bright white markings & the 4th has typical tan markings.

Loons calling & Red Breasted Mergs cavorting on the lake.

2020-04-27 Thread Glenn Wilson
Shepherds are the worst. Pitt Bulls scare me to death. I’ve had way too many
run-ins with Shepard’s lunging at me gnashing their teeth holding me against
rivers and lakes. All dogs are great to their owners. Lots of dogs are friendly
and harmless but I’ve even had a muddy lab (one of the best breads) jump on my
back and nearly knock me over because I didn’t see it coming. Dogs keep me from
birding many hotspots. I won’t mention how I protect myself.
