* Protect Birds From High-Risk Wind Energy Project in New York!
*

Dear John and Sue,

New York state is about to set a dangerous precedent for birds. A high-risk
wind energy project, Heritage Wind, will likely get approved, in spite of
clear dangers to birds and outcry from the public, conservation groups, and
wildlife management agencies.

It would be the first project approved under the state’s new renewable
energy regulations, and would send a signal to the wind energy industry
that turbines can be placed anywhere in New York, regardless of impacts to
birds.

*It’s bad news, but we’re not giving up.* Under New York’s new leadership,
there is still hope to eliminate the project’s most egregious impacts on
birds.

*We’re asking Governor Kathy Hochul to ensure that the Heritage Wind
project takes measures to protect vulnerable bird populations. Will you add
your name to our petition?*

*The location of Heritage Wind — a 5,800-acre facility — presents numerous
risks for birds.* The project is dangerously close to Iroquois National
Wildlife Refuge, and Oak Orchard and Tonawanda State Wildlife Management
Areas.

This biodiverse wetland complex supports nesting Bald Eagles, which are
particularly vulnerable to collisions with wind turbines. The proposed
turbines also lie within an important migratory pathway for huge numbers of
songbirds.

*Making matters worse, the developer of the Heritage Wind project has
proposed inadequate monitoring to determine how many birds the facility
will kill, limiting its accountability.*

New York’s Office of Renewable Energy Siting (ORES) is expected to make a
final decision on the project next week. Before that happens, we’re calling
on Governor Hochul to ensure that the project’s worst-sited turbines are
removed, and adequate bird fatality monitoring is conducted.

*We don’t have much time. Sign our petition asking Governor Hochul to step
in to protect birds in Western New York.*

We saw 3 today. The airport is the place to go. There are even signs inside
the airport about them!

[cayugabirds-l] possible Saw-whet owl

2022-01-08 Thread David McDermitt
I've been hearing what sounds like a Saw-whet owl the last few weeks in the
evening. This is near West Miller road and route 96B in Danby. Heard it a
couple nights ago around 7pm, but typically around 9pm. I've never ID'd one
before so I'm only going on what I hear based on the allaboutbirds website.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Big flock

2022-01-08 Thread Dave Nutter
The bleak season has begun at my place because the Flood Control Channel has
finally frozen solid. Yesterday there was just a thin layer of slush on top in
the morning moving slowly, but a few Canada Geese swam right through it, and
later it broke up and cleared away in the warmer afternoon. I may not see many
waterfowl flying, swimming, diving, displaying & mating as long as for awhile,
although today there are still a few gulls flying around. The Rock pigeons
still are resting on the high-tension wires over the ice, and maybe they will
continue to display atop the pylon which I can see better from my house.

I’m keeping my deck and its railing cleared of snow so that birds can access
the sunflower seeds I put out, and every morning I hang a tube feeder of
sunflower seeds. So far I’ve been visited by a flock of 5 American Goldfinches
and a flock of 16 Mourning Doves, both high counts at the feeder for this young
year, plus I’ve seen 2 other species (White-throated Sparrow and Downy
Woodpecker) at or headed toward my neighbors’ clearly better feeding operation.

My writing was interrupted in the middle of the above paragraph by a surprise
new yard species. The first small flock of Canada Geese I saw this morning at
0845, which I wasn’t sure would happen at all due to the frozen water and some
snow on the grass, included the Ross’s Goose which has been seen since at least
5 January on the ice at Stewart Park and in the lake off Allan Treman State
Marine Park. This morning the Ross’s Goose had been reported among Canada Geese
resting on the frozen Cayuga Inlet between Cass Park and Newman Golf Course. As
it flew past my windows just above eye-level in bright sun, I saw that this
white goose with black wing-tips not only was small, it also had a very short,
very thick neck and a very small, stubby, all-pink triangular bill. I expect it
is grazing on the lawns along the the water between the State Street bridge and
the Fish Ladder east of NYS-13A (Floral Avenue/Five Mile Drive), and I don’t
know, maybe there is even some open water for the geese along there.

[cayugabirds-l] Looking for Photos

2022-01-08 Thread bob mcguire
The Cayuga Bird Club is in the process of revising (updating, adding to) the
Basin Bird Guide and intends to have the Second Edition out in the spring.
Since it was published in 2012 we have sold over 1700 copies. In the past ten
years a couple of the sites have become extinct and several new ones have
appeared.

We are looking for “site shots” for the Hile School Road Marsh, the Genung
Preserve (FTTL property in Freeville), and the newly-open portions of the
Dryden Rail Trail. Since none of those sites are particularly conducive to
winter birding, we cannot simply go out and get the shot today. Hopefully
someone will have taken some in the greener days of the past few years!

The purpose of the photo is to represent the site and be compelling enough to
make someone what to visit. Ideally the shot would have people in it (for
scale and interest) and show them birding.

If you have anything you think might be appropriate, please send the image to
me at the address below. Credit for the photo? None of the photos in the book
carry credit lines for a specific photo. The photographers are credited by name
in the “acknowledgements” section.

Thanks, in advance, for you help.

Bob
