[cayugabirds-l] Snow geese over Union Springs

2022-11-24 Thread job121830
Thurs. 11/24/22  about 2 p.m..   Daughter Becky heard & then we saw a fair
sized raft of snow geese heading SSW which probably took them down towards
Aurora &/or Deans cove, an often safe spot for them, esp. during hunting season
of any kind. They hear shots & head for mid-lake. This is common for Cayuga &
Owasco lakes where we often see large rafts of snows & sometimes blues..

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Snow geese raft

2022-11-24 Thread Deb Grantham
About 4:45 pm from west side of lake near Cayuga Lake State Park: many snow
geese, some in a smallish raft, some flying south but low along the lake.

Also several dozen swans nearer the shore and scattered long a stretch of about
¾ mile. Not sure what kind, was getting too dark.

Two great blue herons.

Lots of small water fowl that I think were coots but am not at all sure.

Deb

First of season (for me) snow goose raft quite distant on cayuga lake, just
north of long point state park. Love seeing that!

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Common Loons on Seneca

2022-11-24 Thread bob mcguire
Today on Lake Ontario at Fair Haven SP: 15 Horned Grebes, 560 Red-breasted
Mergansers, 17 Bonaparte’s Gulls, but only ONE Common Loon. I, too, am
wondering if the loons just haven’t begun to move yet.

I've been to check on Loons over Seneca Lake three times so far, and don't have
much to report. Each day has shown under a dozen Loons. Guessing they haven't
had a reason to move yet. A lot of south winds.

Yesterday two Great Black-backed Gulls flew low right overhead, emitting some
of the most eerie calls I've ever heard and today three Common Loons were
calling from mid lake.

Is anyone watching for Loons on Cayuga this year?

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Common Loons on Seneca

2022-11-24 Thread Geo Kloppel
NW to NNW winds are forecast for the morning of Tuesday the 29th, but the
predicted velocity is quite low; don’t know if that will make for much of a
loon flight…

Re: [cayugabirds-l] New bird

2022-11-24 Thread John Gregoire
Tree Sparrows have been here for a week now as White-Crowns departed.
Plenty of Goldfinch and Juncos now and the White-throats are sparse but
settling in for the winter. Have yet to see a Rough-legged but wintering
Red-tails are here in numbers . I expect that the pheasant pens should be
surrounded. We went up to the Interlaken waterfront and other than geese
there were a few loons, blacks and Herring gull.
