Replying to Deb -- As I understand it, the less-colorful males tend to winter further north - basically anywhere they can find productive open water. I often see males along the west side of the lake in Jan and Feb.

We very often have bluebirds here in winter—Halseyville Rd in Enfield—but today one was checking out a bluebird box. Yesterday had a couple dozen red winged blackbirds under a feeder,
 and Saturday a single grackle.

A bright male Bluebird was spotted checking a nest box yesterday & I once again saw a gray Screech Owl sleeping in a “perfect “ hole in a tree, here at Kendal. 


Owl must have other roosts, since I don’t see it there every day.

​Chemung Valley Audubon Society meets February 16 at 7:00 p.m. in the West End 
Room at Appleridge, 168 Miller St., Horseheads. All are welcome to attend to 
learn about local birds, the society's projects, and how to become involved. 
Appleridge is wheelchair accessible.

​A 7:00 p.m. Bird Identification Workshop by Bill Ostrander is followed by a 
brief business meeting at 7:30. The evening's program is "Birds of Florida" 
with photographer Craig Braack of Allegany County, NY.

​Braack travels widely throughout North America in search of exquisite bird 
photos. His Florida program features many of the bird species most easily 
photographed in the Sunshine State. He will provide a handout that lists good 
locations for photographers, with specific information about best times to 
visit and where to stay.

​Closer to home, Braack is active in the New York State Ornithological 
Association and the Allegany County Bird Club, and he served as Allegany County 
Historian for 30 years. Please join us for a program sure to take the chill off 
of winter.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Any sites of large snow geese numbers?

In my experience, “the big push” can start anywhere from the last week in 
February - 3rd week of March at the Montezuma Wetlands Complex. And 
specifically in the towns of Savannah, Tyre, Seneca Falls, and Montezuma. 

Last year the peak was around March 8-11. I have some wild pictures/videos from 
March 8 around 8 am. The lake effect was dumping down, visibility was horrible, 
but I could hear geese all around me. I was also the only one there, at the old 
“Potato Barn” pull off along Route 31. The Muck Flats! It was a cool experience.

Also, keep an eye on Middle Creek WMA 
(https://www.pgc.pa.gov/InformationResources/AboutUs/ContactInformation/Southeast/MiddleCreekWildlifeManagementArea/Pages/MigrationUpdate.aspx)
 in Lancaster PA. I think “our” geese stage there before making it north.

Thank you. I have already done all the internet searches. In the end they
have turned up "dried" mealworms only, not "live" mealworms. Shipping live
mealworms is expensive and stressful on the live larvae (translate:
mortality). I thought/hoped that local bluebird enthusiast might know
something that google didn't. I'm still hoping. 

   Just a reminder that tonight is our February meeting of the Cayuga Bird 
Club. Although the meeting begins at 7:30, please note that the Reading of the 
List will be reordered to take place at 7:15, prior to the regular business 
meeting, to safeguard the speakers' time while retaining this long-standing 
tradition during the more "social" and interactive time ahead of the business 
meeting.
 Ken Rosenberg, Diane Morton & Ken Kemphues will present, "A Birding Tour of 
Morocco".  The three of them, along with seven other participants, experienced 
a memorable birding tour of Morocco last spring. Their exploration went from 
the city of Marrakech to the High Atlas Mountains, Middle Atlas, plains, Sahara 
Desert, and the Atlantic coast, each area with birds specialized to their 
unique habitats. In addition to North African endemic species such as the 
Northern Bald Ibis, Pharaoh Eagle-Owl, and Cream-colored Courser, they found 
migrant songbirds, over a dozen species of larks, and several delightful 
Sandgrouse species. Come join us as they share their experience in this 
beautiful country  birds, vibrant culture, and varied landscapes. About 
the speakers: Ken Rosenberg is a lifelong birder and attended Cornell 
University as an undergraduate. After receiving his PhD from Louisiana State 
University, he returned to Cornell. He has recently retired from his joint 
position as an Senior Scientist with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the 
American Bird Conservancy, where his focus was on the conservation status and 
distribution of bird populations, particularly migratory birds. He is the lead 
author of the 2019 paper published in Science with the staggering report that 
nearly 3 billion North American birds have been lost since 1970.Ken Kemphues 
and Diane Morton are active members of the Cayuga Bird Club; Ken is the Cayuga 
Bird Clubs treasurer and Diane is a past president and current director 
of the club. They are both retired from Cornells Department of Molecular 
Biology and Genetics where Ken was a Professor and Diane a Senior Research 
Associate. They met as post-docs while at the University of Colorado, and have 
been married for 38 years. They both enjoy leading bird club field trips and 
traveling to see birds.
Cayuga Bird Club meetings start at 7:30 pm on the second Monday of each month, 
September through June, and are free and open to the public. In-person meetings 
at the Lab of Ornithology start with cookies at 7:00pm and club business at 
7:30pm, followed by the speaker's presentation which ends by 9:00pm. We will 
attempt to make presentations available virtually, either as a recording posted 
a few days later, or via a Zoom meeting.

northern end of the lake yet? I’ve been up twice and have only seen one fairly 
long, narrow strip of snow geese, but nothing like the numbers of the past. Is 
it too early?

winter further north - basically anywhere they can find productive open
water. I often see males along the west side of the lake in Jan and Feb.

     2/6: A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was spotted at Mercer Park on the Seneca 
River in Baldwinsville.

     2/7: 5 BLACK VULTURES were seen at the Woodchuck Hill Preserve south of 
Fayetteville.

      2/8: A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was again seen on West Sorrell Hill 
Road south of Baldwinsville.

     2/10: 8 BLACK VULTURES were seen on Seneca Turnpike between Jamesville and 
Manlius. 2 BLACK VULTURES were seen at Lynden Corners in Fayetteville.

     2/11: An ICELAND GULL was seen at the Inner Harbor on the south end of 
Onondaga Lake.







Madison County






     2/7: An ICELAND GULL was seen on Ditchbank Road north of Canastota.

     2/11: 11 EVENING GROSBEAKS were at a feeder on Carpenter Road east of 
Sheds.

     Upwards of 48 EVENING GROSBEAKS continue at a feeder on Hawes Road at the 
north end of the Eaton Reservoir.







Herkimer County






     2/8: A SHORT-EARED OWL was seen from McKinnon Road north of Herkimer.

     2/11: 20 EVENING GROSBEAKS were seen at a feeder at Salisbury north of 
Dolgeville.

     2/12: 3 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were found near a residence in Salisbury.

I have been seeing bluebirds around my property (Sheffield Road, Ithaca/Enfield 
town line) and on Bundy Road (town of Ithaca) for the last week. Not every day 
and only one or two at a time.

A bright male Bluebird was spotted checking a nest box yesterday & I once again 
saw a gray Screech Owl sleeping in a “perfect “ hole in a tree, here at Kendal.
Owl must have other roosts, since I don’t see it there every day.
