[cayugabirds-l] Osprey at Sapsucker Woods this evening

2023-04-04 Thread Jane Leff
4/4/23 6:30pm
I watched an osprey perched near top of a snag overlooking Sapsucker Woods
pond. I wonder, is there an Osprey nest somewhere in SSW?

[cayugabirds-l] Mt.Pleasant bird sightings

2023-04-04 Thread Marie P. Read
Hi everyone,
I check out the fields at the eastern end of Mt Pleasant Rd twice today.
Once by car: I stopped to look and listen for Horned Larks. Nothing. Usually by
now, if they're there, I would have noticed their display flights high in the
sky over the fields.
But I DID notice an Eastern Meadowlark singing from, the ground.
Three American Kestrels on the wires and perched on poles over the fields.
Back near home around 11:30 am a Red-shouldered a hawk was calling loudly as it
circled high above. Last I saw it was headed toward Laura's place  A
first-year male Purple Finch at my feeder.

Then this afternoon, Mt Pleasant Road on foot. Still no Horned Larks. But an
Eastern Meadowlark singing from high in a tree by the observatory. A female
kestrel suddenly flying from (out of...I think) a nest box, either already
nesting in there or checking it out.
As others have noted there's been a sudden influx of Dark-eyed Juncos...now
many trilling away in concert with the spring peepers. Delightful!

2023-04-04 Thread Deb Grantham
I saw at least 6 eastern phoebes at a friend's house on Creamery Road, Caroline
this afternoon.

I saw a junco today at my house on Sheffield Road and I think there were others
flitting around.

I've been seeing robins for weeks, of course, but saw a flock of close to 50 on
Bundy Road, Ithaca.

[cayugabirds-l] Large migratory flocks and new FOY birds

2023-04-04 Thread John Gregoire
Radar indicates a very strong and stalled migration on our doorstep this
morning so we went through the sanctuary looking. Soon we were wishing that
we still banded, but after 40 years we called that project ended.

Kestrel Haven is off Fitzgerald Rd and a private wildlife sanctuary
protected by the Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust. Visitation is
prohibited.

This morning, large flocks of juncos were everywhere which may account for
all the radar returns. Mixed in were other migrants but viewing conditions
were horrid. We did confirm Fox Sparrow and Flicker as new year birds.
Tantalizing were two thrushes not seen well enough for positive ID but we
"felt" they were Wood and Hermit. We did spot two warbler species but no
definitive field marks for an ID.

It appears that the weather will give us another possibility tomorrow. Last
night, Sue's moth lights and bait boards were very well attended by many
species.
