[cayugabirds-l] Louisiana Waterthrush

2023-04-25 Thread Colleen Richards
Sorry for the late posting. Just read Pete Saracino's post which reminded me of
the also talkative Louisiana Waterthrush we heard at the base of Taughannock
Falls around 11:30 this morning. With echoes and loud falls noises it was
impossible to get bearings for a sighting, but he sure let us know he was
there! On the way back out of the gorge also spotted one of the peregrines as
it dropped down from the nesting ledge and flew downstream. Colleen Richards

[cayugabirds-l] Merlins in Trumansburg

2023-04-25 Thread Jared Dawson
A Merlin pair has been noticeable around the upper village during April
(single bird first noted on March 16), but it appears that they have not
yet begun to nest. For the last several days, they have been doing a lot of
vocalizing in the immediate vicinity of my house, on the block bounded by
Bradley and Strowbridge Sts, and the county line division East Seneca Rd.
Today I got extended scope views of the female grooming itself on its
favorite perching tree of late, a black locust along the easterly side of
Bradley north of #36. It was doing the majority of the "whinnying", with
the male responding with sharp and short "kip" calls per Pieplow, which he
names as a courtship or pair contact call.
Twice I have seen the male fly right at the female on its perch, but
immediately the female has flown out without apparent contact.
One of the norway spruce trees that was being favored today had been
recently visited by a crow pair with nesting material, but there was no
sign of them today.

[cayugabirds-l] new birds this morning including RB Grosbeak

2023-04-25 Thread Alicia Plotkin
I didn't think there would be much migrating in last night but some
birds showed up here (SW corner Town of Ovid, Seneca Basin).  Best was a
male Rose-Breasted Grosbeak who spent 45 minutes first thing this
morning gleaning the oak tassels and ignoring our sunflower feeders, and
hasn't been seen since.  Also a mob of White-Throated Sparrows, we've
had a few this past week but as of today they are everywhere singing
their hearts out.  A couple Red-Breasted Nuthatches (uncommon on our
property) and the barn swallow contingent has gone way up in numbers.
Still have a lot of Yellow Rumped Warblers, but as of today they are
joined only by a couple of Palm and one Pine Warbler.

Don't recall ever hosting a RB Grosbeak ahead of our first Baltimore
Oriole before.  Birds like to mix it up.

2023-04-25 Thread Muhammad Arif
I saw and heard the merlin near east end of Sycamore on 3/17 (I entered it in
eBird) and also on 4/16 when I visited a friend near there. He said he had seen

Hi John,

There is a calling bird (pair?) at Myers Point Park in Lansing as well— I think
they were there last year.

The “Tareyton “ bird may be nesting again near the east end of Sycamore— a
female perched in a tree there giving some softer, different calls.

near Rt. 38, The Parkway near school, Trumansburg, Jennings Pond, and a
possible pair near Christopher Lane and Brandywine. That is 11 pair, but I
haven't found any nests yet. The females should be incubating now and the pair
is less vocal. With noisy time in the last two weeks of nestlings and shortly
after fledging in about 6-8 weeks, we may well match last year's county high of
12 pairs.

Any information appreciated.

Thanks, John

The Brandywine birds are where Simsbury drive ends at Brandywine.
I often see one perched in a deciduous tree back of a Y shaped, trimmed white

There has been a successful breeding pair of Cooper's Hawks (using old crow

[cayugabirds-l] distinctive Yellow Warbler at Swan Pond (& apology)

2023-04-25 Thread Dave Nutter
Yesterday at Stewart Park’s Swan Pond I saw a distinctive male Yellow Warbler.
In addition to the normal rufous streaks on the breast, it had a rufous spot on
the right side of its forehead. Have you seen this bird? I’m curious whether it
is just passing through briefly or whether is staying longer term.

- - Dave Nutter

PS Apologies for misinformation about Salmon Creek I introduced into the notice
of the Salt Point Prothonotary Warbler report yesterday. The Lat/Long I
included from the texts was correct, and I hope some folks still were helped by
hearing about the rarity on this listserve.
