Re: [cayugabirds-l] Taughannock Falls light show?

2024-04-14 Thread tess
Sounds like there is a lot of momentum behind this and it might be
easier to deflect than to stop unless the weather is like today.
Celebrating the 100th probably is a huge deal for the agency, which
certainly have manages a lot of great habitat for birds.  And they
people behind this particular event have put time, money, and effort
into planning and executing it and probably will be reluctant to abandon it.

Is there a way this could be done and disturbance minimized?  What if
they lit up the falls from right below so the gorge itself wasn't
illuminated, and instead of hiking up the gorge they centered the
celebration on the overlook rather than hiking the gorge hike? Maybe
there's a local bird-loving food truck or caterer who would be willing
to offer food at a discount to the parks for the three nights up at the
visitor center by the overlook?

Is there someone on the list with contacts at the Regional State Park
office or at the Chamber who could sound them out on whether they are
open to alternatives?  Does the bird club have any programming it runs
in partnership with any of the local state parks?  We could try to shut
this down but there's a good chance that would fail and, whether or not
it did, trying to shut it down entirely will piss off a lot people which
might not be good for birds (or even birders) in the long run.  Note the
Chamber of Commerce seems to be running the hikes so anyone on the list
who is a member might want to gently explain the issue to Jennifer
Tavares, who seems like a decent person.  Not sure if Fred Bonn is still
the Regional Director of State Parks but he has been flexible in the
past when approached given actual evidence and alternatives - but
whoever approaches him should be prepared with published evidence or
personal reports by someone (maybe Tim G) who is an acknowledged expert
on peregrines and can show that the light show is going to disturb the
peregrines.  Keep in mind that these folks know peregrines nest on urban
bridges and buildings that are lit at night so they will need to know
why this is different.

I went to the websites for State Parks (NYSOPRHP), Tompkins County Chamber of
Commerce, and Visit Ithaca, used the Contact Us feature of each, and briefly
asked them to please not do a light show in the gorge due to potential
disturbance of the Peregrines and Ravens nesting there.

Being listed as endangered or threatened isn’t really the criterion for legal
protection. The Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA) already protects these birds
and their nests, eggs, and nestlings.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Taughannock Falls light show?

2024-04-14 Thread Geo Kloppel
The Peregrines’ nest is just below the Visitor’s Center building at the falls overlook, so not likely to be lighted directly, unless the technicians are planning something really extravagant! The Ravens' nest is above and  slightly north of the lip of the falls itself. It's well within the reach of spotlighting intended to highlight the falls, unless that were carefully aimed to avoid the nest area…On Apr 14, 2024, at 1:53 PM, Rachel Hogancamp wrote:Do we know where the lights will be? so the first 3 people to rsvp will be able to join with speaker Julie Hart.
Contact me at cl...@juno.com for confirmation.
For everyone, though we hope you will join us tomorrow evening, April 15 to
hear our Julie Hart, Project Coordinator, New York Breeding Bird Atlas III, as
she gives her presentation, "How you can help NYs breeding birds" at
Foundation of Light at 391 Turkey Hill Rd.; social time starts at 7 pm, the
reading of the bird list at 7:20, and club business at 7:30 followed by the
presentation. Learn about the third Breeding Bird Atlas in NY and how you can
help this community science project. Atlasing is a great way for birders of all
abilities to learn about birds while directly contributing to science and
conservation. This is the final year of the 5-year Atlas project. Can you help
us fill in a gap for your favorite species? Do you like to bird somewhere
unique or remote? The Atlas is a statewide survey and you can participate at
any time using the free eBird app. Wile atlasing, you will explore new areas,

intern with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Audubon. She traveled for
several years doing field work around the globe, then spent several years
chasing high-elevation birds around the Northeast and Hispaniola as the
coordinator for Mountain Birdwatch, before she went on to earn her
Masters degree studying the impacts of climate change on Cassia
Crossbill in southern Idaho. After spending several years abroad, she is now
the Project Coordinator for the third Breeding Bird Atlas in NY. She also
serves as the co-chair of the North American Ornithological Atlas Committee.
Colleen Richards Corresponding Secretary Cayuga Bird Club Cayuga Bird Club

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Taughannock Falls light show?

2024-04-14 Thread Geo Kloppel
Peregrines (and Ravens too) sometimes nest on buildings, bridges, and other structures in the vicinity of artificial lights. But those individuals have chosen those sites, and they are accustomed to the lights. I think the potential for harm to the birds nesting in the dark Taughannock gorge is concentrated in the suddenness and surprise of turning spotlights upon them. Especially tough for the Ravens, whose nest is right above the falls! If it was my decision, I wouldn’t risk it at this season. But if it’s really beyond cancelling, I suppose it might help to turn on the lights early, _before_ darkness settles in the gorge. Also to direct the spots solely upon the falls itself, and not flood the Raven’s nest and the whole amphitheater with light. There will already be quite a bit of moonlight those evenings. I know I want to be there, not to see the spotlights but to observe the reaction of  the incubating females.-GeoOn Apr 14, 2024, at 1:16 PM, Deb Grantham wrote:

Below is the press release for the evening light shows at the great falls in
Taughannock Falls State Park later this week, which have potential to disturb
the Peregrine Falcons and Ravens that are currently on nests there).

Note that the event is jointly hosted by NYS Parks, Visit Ithaca, and also the
Tompkins Chamber, which is handling online registration for after-dark hikes up
the gorge trail to the lighted falls.
