[cayugabirds-l] Common Nighthawk

2010-08-14 Thread Alm9413
Last evening at a friend's home on Yaple Road, a number of us witnessed a
Common Night hawk fly over us heading east. We watched it's flight pattern
until it vanished over the horizon.

[cayugabirds-l] Osprey

2010-06-19 Thread Alm9413
I don't know if this has been posted or not, but there is an Osprey nest on
the west side of the lake 3-4 miles south of the gas station at the
northern end. It is on the west side of the road and, actually, quite close to
the road. I was surprised seeing it. They are definitely spreading Ithaca
way.

[cayugabirds-l] CBC Field Trip

2010-05-17 Thread Alm9413
Hi Folks,

Sorry this is so late. I truly have been birding too much with not much
time to post things. Anyway, I apologize.

There were 11 of us - Judy, Donna, John, Stephanie, Sara Jane, Larry,
Sidney, Klaus, Stuart, Paul, and me on the Lindsay Parsons Cayuga Bird Trip.
We
met at 7:00 am at Wegmans and carpooled to Lindsay Parsons.

We saw a total of 73 species (maybe). At the parking lot at Lindsay
Parsons, we first heard a PRAIRIE WARBLER and a YELLOW-THROATED VIREO. A male
NORTHERN HARRIER flew overhead. We heard a FIELD SPARROW, and a possible
fly-by DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT. (that is the questionable bird. It looked
more
like a duck to me). If one of the field-trip folks really had a good look
at the bird, please pipe in.

The beginning of the walk, we had RED-EYED VIREO, AMERICAN ROBIN, we saw
both SPOTTED and SOLITARY SANDPIPERS at the ponds. Green Heron was not
seen. Where are they??

Continuing on, we heard and had great looks at a BROWN THRASHER in the
field. A CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER and an INDIGO BUNTING (which we had killer
looks at) were seen before the RR tracks. There were also BLACK AND WHITE
WARBLERS there. At the railroad tracks, we heard a MOURNING WARBLER calling.
Judy saw it for an instant. Young eyes are great! Thank you, Judy!

Heading towards Celia's cup, you can either go straight or to the right. We
went to the right. That was when we first heard the BLUE-WINGED WARBLER.
Everyone had great looks at a HOODED WARBLER. Some of the guys stayed
back and eventually heard and saw a BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO. BLACK-THROATED BLUE
were heard and seen.

Some of us hangers-on from the bird trip went up Station Road. We walked
into a very steep area to try to hear Worm-eating Warbler. It was too
late in the day to hear it. We did hear or see OVENBIRD, BLACK-THROATED GREEN
and BLACKBURNIAN WARBLERS. Those birds breed there.
Good Birding,
Ann

[cayugabirds-l] Sunday birding plus SNOWY EGRET

2010-05-09 Thread Alm9413
Hi,

Not quite knowing how to bird today because of the cold, windy, snowy day,
Gary and I decided to make a trip up the lake where it was colder, windier,
and more snowy. Makes sense, right?

Highlights were:

Union Springs Frontenac Park
12 COMMON TERNS on a pier

Cayuga Tow Path Machine
4 COMMON TERNS flying

Montezuma Entrance and Main Pool
26+ LEAST SANDPIPERS
4 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS
2 BLUE-WINGED TEAL

Tschache's Pool
Many LEAST SANDPIPERS landing out of sight in the grass. We figured there
are many more sandpipers around, but because there is virtually no habitat
for them, they are in the grassy, marshy spots.
4+ BALD EAGLES
2+ OSPREY

May's Pool
1 COMMON MOORHEN
8+ REDHEADED DUCKS
2 RINGED-NECK DUCKS
PIED-BILLED GREBES
1 female BUFFLEHEAD
2+ COOTS

North Spring Pool
2 BLACK TERNS
1 SPOTTED SANDPIPER
OSPREY on nest

Tow Path Road
THIS is where things became really WEIRD.
We saw a SPOTTED SANDPIPER land on a tree branch and stay there, then we
drove by 2 RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS in a nest box at the house with a pond just
before going up East Road. We figured that we had just entered the
Twilight Zone. Besides the Snowy Egret, I think the Red-Wings were my
favorite
of the day.

Knox Marcellus
19 DUNLINS in breeding plumage
12+ LEAST SANDPIPERS
2 WHITE-RUMPED WARBLERS
1 CASPIAN TERN
4 LESSER YELLOWLEGS
1 SPOTTED SANDPIPER

Railroad Road
SORA
MARSH WREN
VIRGINIA RAIL
AMERICAN BITTERN
MOORHEN
SWAMP SPARROW
PIED-BILLED GREBE
all calling at the same time. Bad weather, good birds. We did not hear a
Least Bittern call. Either too cold for them or they aren't there yet.

VanDyne Spoor Road
2 TRUMPETER SWANS
2 GREATER YELLOWLEGS

Union Springs, Mill Pond
1 SNOWY EGRET actively feeding. We didn't see it on the way up the lake.
It could have been behind the pond in the creek. Who knows? We watched it
for quite awhile, maybe 15 minutes before it raised it's leg to show a
yellow foot. Happy Mother's Day to all!!

Good birding,
Ann Mitchell

[cayugabirds-l] Roy Park Preserve

2010-05-08 Thread Alm9413
Hi All,
I led a trip to the Roy Park Preserve this morning for a Spring
Ornithology local trip. This was basically a warbler trip. The first one we
encountered was a male Prairie Warbler. He showed himself and sang for us. We
saw a
Canada Warbler singing from the bottom of the gorge (thanks, Peter).
Usually, I hear and see a Louisiana Waterthrush from there, but not today. We
did
hear one from another river feeding into Six-mile Creek. We had great
looks at a Black-throated Green Warbler, actually male and female. Common
Yellow-throats were everywhere. Yellow Warblers were seen or heard. I did
hear a bird song when we first entered the preserve. It had a Golden-winged
Warbler song. I searched in vain for that bird. We listened to it on my Ipod.
On the way back to the car, we actually saw the bird. It was a Blue-winged
Warbler! It had to have been a hybrid. We all enjoyed that. We also saw
Magnolia and Chestnut-sided Warblers while hunting for the Blue-Golden-winged
Warbler plus Scarlet Tanagers, Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, Bobolinks, Eastern
Towhees, and Turkeys were also heard. Someone in the group heard a
Yellow-billed Cuckoo. Wish we all had heard it. What a morning!
Best, Ann Mitchell

[cayugabirds-l] Eared Grebe in Aurora

2010-01-17 Thread alm9413
Around 2:45 P.M., I spotted an Eared Grebe from the north side of the
boathouse in Aurora. It was somewhere around 1/3rd the way out in the lake. I
first noticed 5 Horned Grebes further north and further out on the lake. As
I scanned, the Eared Grebe came into view. It was much closer to shore, but
I still needed to zoom in on it. It was actively feeding, heading south.
The dark head and shape of the forehead, white ear patch, and dusky neck
were easily identified.

[cayugabirds-l] Saturday birding

2010-01-16 Thread alm9413
Gary and I went to Syracuse this A.M. to see the Yellow-throated Warbler,
and after 1.5 hour's, we finally saw it. The bird showed up for a bit,
foraging at a very quick pace and then it moved on. We could have stood around
for another 1 and 1/2 hours, but we were rather cold by then. After
leaving the warbler, we came across a diner that had a great variety of
breakfast foods. Fantastic food!. Ithaca should have a diner like that. The
birding
down the east side of the lake was great also! We saw Horned Grebes, but
have to come back for Eared Grebes.

[cayugabirds-l] Brant and Black Scoters

2009-10-23 Thread Alm9413
I arrived at East Shore Drive before 5:00 P.M.. Gary Kohlenberg and Drew ?
were there. I saw the MANY reported Brant near the Weather Station in the
middle of the lake. Gary said the BLACK SCOTERS moved pretty far north,
too far north to id them. We went to Myers Park, and from the point, we
eventually saw 12 Black Scoters heading south. The 3 reported DUNLIN were
still around and very close to us, so we had excellent views of them. Of
note, there were many flocks of CORMORANTS heading south. Unfortunately, I
neglected to count them. (Guess I need to do much better for E-bird.) We did
see many more of them at East Shore and at Portland Point. Not one Greater
Cormorant among them so far.

Hi,
Around 1:00 P.M., I was at George Road. Bad lighting. The water is really
receding there. The plus is that there are rocks and mud. I counted 33+

Golden Eagle

2009-08-05 Thread Alm9413

Hi All,
I stopped by George Road around 5:30 this afternoon and saw a large bird
flapping and soaring overhead. I did not have my scope with me but spent
about 5 or so minutes watching the bird soar towards me and go around in
circles. I tried to make it into a juvenile Bald Eagle, but I don't think so.

It soared with a bit of a dihedral. The upper part of the wing had white
marks near the tips. It's head seemed quite golden. The birds was quite
dark with only a hint of white markings. I believe it was a sub adult GOLDEN
EAGLE. Pretty neat.
