[cayugabirds-l] Dryden Conservation Board Resolution Recommending Preservation of Dryden Lake Dam

2021-01-09 Thread Bard Prentiss
 v
DRAFT 12/29/2020

Dryden Conservation Board Resolution Recommending Preservation of Dryden Lake
Dam

Whereas there has been a dam at Dryden Lake Dryden, NY since circa 1801; and

Whereas the body of water known as Dryden Lake, created by the building of the
dam, has provided numerous benefits to the citizens of the Town of Dryden and
surrounding areas for over two hundred years, with its benefits changing and
expanding over two plus centuries; and

Whereas the lake originally provided power for a sawmill and ice harvesting, it
created additional waterfowl and wildlife habitat that has made the lake today
a birding “hot spot” with 228 species observed, providing migratory bird rest
areas and nesting and foraging habitat (Canada geese, ducks, loons, herons,
Bald Eagles) as well as habitat for numerous mammals, amphibians, turtles, etc;
and

Whereas Dryden Lake and its surrounding areas provides many forms of year round
recreation for town and surrounding area residents, such as fishing, ice
fishing, hiking, jogging, dog walking, biking, cross country skiing, snow
shoeing (on the Jim Schug trail), kayaking, canoeing, ice skating, hunting,
trapping, bird watching, picnicking, etc; and

Whereas Dryden Lake and its surrounding natural areas are an important
educational resource, being used both for formal classes in ecology and natural
resources (Cornell University) and informal education of everyone from young
children to lifelong education participants; and

Whereas the Town of Dryden currently provides a community park at the Lake
under an agreement with the New York State Department of Environmental
Conservation; and

Whereas the Dryden Lake park is a popular location for many community events
with the lake being the center piece for those events; and

Whereas the lake has a rich historical and cultural value to the citizens of
the town; and

Whereas the NYS DEC is considering the removal of the dam and the elimination
of Dryden Lake in the form it has existed for over two hundred years; and

Whereas the Dryden Town Board has requested a recommendation from the
Conservation Board on the future of the Dryden Lake dam and ultimately Dryden
Lake itself.

Therefore, let it be resolved that the Town of Dryden Conservation Board
recommends to the Dryden Town Board that the latter take all necessary action
to ensure the preservation of a dam and the body of water known as Dryden Lake,
maintaining its current contribution to the recreational and ecological
benefits provided to the Dryden community.

[cayugabirds-l] Dryden Lake may be in danger

2021-01-08 Thread Bard Prentiss

The Dryden Lake that we know and love is in serious danger of reverting
toits primitive original form as a shallow pond.   The dam is beginning to leak a bit and its current owner
NYS DEC  may not wish to spend the
money for a proper replacement of concrete nor are they interested in repairing and maintaining the current
dam. The town is also resistant to assuming the costs and
responsibility for either idea, although there has been a dam there since the
late1700s.  It is unlikely given the way things happen these days that the
dam will be allowed to just rot away. It will probably have to be
destroyed soon, for liability reasons, and the lake drained to primitive
levels.   Such action would dramatically effect the lives of persons
throughout theregion. The lake would, in effect, become relatively useless to
its current large, diverse crop of users. It would have little appeal to the
large number of boaters currently dotting its waters throughout the
warmer months. Its shallow nature would limit the species of fish that could live there to pan fish.   The current Dryden Lake Park would be difficult to justify and
the trail would have little relationship to the remaining pond.  The current lake’s great value to birders and naturalists would be seriously reduced.   The lake attracts thousands of visitors yearly for all the activities mentioned above as well as for public
gatherings, picnicking and relaxing.   The loss of the lake would have a major economic impact on
the region. It would be truly serious for the area to loose Dryden Lake.We can’t let it happen!
         Attached
is a resolution by the Town of Dryden Conservation
Board.   To
strengthen the case for keeping a dam individuals might write to the
NYSDEC Region 7, Fisher Ave, Cortland, N Y 13045 and the Dryden
Town Board, 93 E Main St. Dryden, N Y 13053 expressing the
importance of the lake to them personally.   PS: Feel free to post this any where it might further spread the word.

Yesterday, we had several interesting birds at the feeder. Along with several
siskins we had a pair of Carolina wrens, and a Red breasted hatch. This is
the first red breasted not hatch we’ve had in over two years. I’m not clear
where they were last year but we didn’t have any. This year is starting out
like an excellent Feeder birding year.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Carolina wren

2020-02-27 Thread Bard Prentiss
Hi Alicia,

After I posted i continued to search and found this JOURNAL ARTICLE
Sexual Size Dimorphism and Assortative Mating in Carolina Wrens

Thomas M. Haggerty
Journal of Field Ornithology
Vol. 77, No. 3 (Summer, 2006), pp. 259-265
It states clearly that: "Analysis revealed that males were significantly larger
than females in all body measurements."
I had read that only males sing but it was not clear till I found this that
males were larger. you suggest that females sing too.

[cayugabirds-l] Feeder birds

2018-11-13 Thread Bard Prentiss
Two Fridays ago Matt Young
stoped by for a visit. In the course of our chatting he mentioned that unlike
last year this’ll be a good year for feeder birds since there isn’t much wild
food. WOW was he right. In the last few days my feeders in Dryden village have
been visited by countless Chickadees tufted tit mice. Downey and Harry wood
peckers small flocks of pine Siskins and. Gold finches. Several each of white
and red breasted nuthatches pairs of Carolina wren bousefinch and red belly
woodpeckers several morning doves and probably a lot more that slips my mind.
Some year.
Waiting for evening and blue grosbeaks.

[cayugabirds-l] Ziess victory 7x42 for sale

2018-08-03 Thread Bard Prentiss
Hi all, Due to a permanent nerve injury I am no longer able to use my Ziess
victory 7x42 Binocs. They have recently been discontinued due to poor sales but
as anyone who has used them knows they are probably, optically, the best
binoculars ever made. I was there when Wild Birds Unlimited got their first
pair and when Walt checked them out he passed them to me with the comment " it
doesn't get any better than this". I agreed and, shortly after, bought mine. I
had been using the previous generation of Ziess 7x4 2 for about 30 years and
guessed it was time, given the awesome improvements, to replace them. I prefer
7x42s due to the greater brightness and exceptional field of view. i used them
for watching hawks and warblers and everything in between and never felt
handicapped. The advantages more than made up for the 1 to 3x reduction in
power. I'm asking $999.00 cash for them but may entertain offers.

[cayugabirds-l] eagles ?

2017-07-03 Thread Bard Prentiss

Hi All,
I keep getting reports of daily visitations of Bald Eagles at Dryden Lake from
non birders living around the lake. it's possible that they are Ospreys
nesting nearby and even eagles nesting nearby. Perhaps someone might check it
out. I would but I have to be loaded in the car and driven there , about 40
min. total for a visit plus observation time. I can't ask my wife to do that
very often.

[cayugabirds-l] Purposed birding and nature observation site

2017-04-13 Thread Bard Prentiss
Hi All,

Please watch the attached video and message from Bob Beck supporting
the proposed extension of the Jim Schug trail, from Dryden to the East
Ithaca Recreation Way. When complete the trail will provide access to
many otherwise nearly inaccessible top shelf birding and general nature
observation sites and opportunities, as well as a safe footpath and bike
way connecting Dryden to Ithaca and its large network of trails.

You can voice your support for the trail and the many opportunities it will
provide birders and naturalists by voting once a day until May,12. Please
do so. We can use all the help we can get. $50,000 to $100,000 would
go a long way towards making this project a reality.

[cayugabirds-l] Purple finch and "The yellow birds are back"

2017-04-07 Thread Bard Prentiss
Hi,

Gina spotted our first purple finch of the year this AM. They nest in the
Norway Spruces next door.

We also had our first male goldfinch in full breeding plumage at a feeder
today. Before today the yellow feathers were sparse and not particularly
attractive. Then today, as if a new species had arrived, We were treated to the
shocking yellow of our first "yellowbird" of the spring.
"The yellow birds are back" was the very predictable announcement , each
spring, of a charming, now deceased couple in Dryden. Knowing that I like
birds they would give me a call as soon as they saw their first "yellowbird".
I never had the heart to tell them that the dull, mostly greenish birds at
their feeder all winter were were winter plumage "yellowbirds".

[cayugabirds-l] old and new birds

Hi,
This has been a better than average year for feeder and yard birds at my house.
I have both sexes of red bellied, downy and hairy woodpeckers and a female
pileated, several rb and wb nuthatches. A white throated sparrow and a brown
creeper that show up daily along with chickadees, bluejays, modos, d e Juncos,
e starlings, n. cardinals, etc.. An a. crow frequently cleans up the scraps
under the suet feeder. Recently, common grackles are infrequent visitors. In
January a coopers hawk took a modo from the ground below a feeder. This week I
added a cedar waxwing and an a. robin both whom must have been attracted by the
feeder flock. This morning I am watching a small flock of song sparrows and a
single fox sparrow. My first in yeaofrs.

[cayugabirds-l] yard birds

2017-02-16 Thread Bard Prentiss
Hi Alll,
This morning I was visited by two quite special, to me, yard birds. First a
Brown Creeper appeared in a the tree near my feeders. it stayed in the yard for
about 10 minutes. An hour or so later a Carolina Wren showed up. It only
stayed for a minute or so and didn't visit the suet feeders which were in use
by E. Starlings. I'm hopeful it will return soon.

Best,
Bard

Re: [cayugabirds-l] MNWR Caspian Terns and pedestrians on the Wildlife Drive :(

2014-08-02 Thread Bard Prentiss
I don't remember anyone addressing this long standing annoyance in the manner I
mention below and I think its worth a try:
Perhaps the bird clubs in the region could each submit thoughtful petitions to
the director of mnwr requesting a policy change. If Chris didn't mind one might
also originate with this list serve. It would be difficult for a public servant
to ignore several hundred signatures behind a group of thoughtfully worded
letters and It should at least generate a response and get a dialogue going.

 Hi John and all,
My question to you is were the birds disturbed by so many people being out. I
have been to MNWR for more than 20 years. When I started birding MNWR there
was no restriction of being in the car. We could walk around on the drive.
I have been to many NWR refuges, nowhere there was restrictions as to be in
car. I have seen shorebirds and other birds from as close as few feet from
me. Birds get used to human beings if we are not shooting them or harassing
them. So why there is so much fuss about disturbing the non_existing birds on
 the wildlife drive.
I am for the one who believe in opening the drive to foot traffic.
I agree if someone is harassing the birds they should be stopped. If someone
is digiscoping that means birds were far anyway, so why complain about them?

I vote for wildlife drive should be open for foot traffic!

 Cheers
 Meena

Many Caspian Terns along the Wildlife Drive at Montezuma this afternoon. I
very much enjoyed trying to photograph them in flight. (Now the rant..) What
I did NOT enjoy were all the people out of their vehicles. Every single
person in the five cars ahead of me were out of the vehicles. A young couple
were digiscoping with a nice spotting scope on a tripod. Another woman with a
large telephoto lens was parked in the middle of the drive and was excitedly
taking photos. Two elderly women were down at the edge of the water snapping
pictures of the mallows in bloom. I could go on I moved to Seneca Falls
19 years ago and have been a regular visitor since. I cannot recall a year
when the foot traffic was as bad as I have seen it this year. There are two
signs that instruct visitors to stay in their vehicles that drivers pass
before entering the drive and a third reminder after the big left turn before
Benning Marsh. However, I can understand how visitors would miss seeing them.
I think this is a problem that needs a solution. I would like to speak to the
Refuge staff formally about it. If anyone would like to join me or have me
relay his or her thoughts, please contact me offline. Thank you for your time.

I had my first of the year Dryden village Redpols this morning.
Perhaps it's a sign of spring. I rarely get them until mid March.

Hi All,
I just saw a small flock of 5 Northern Shovlers in the little bay
that never freezes on the north end of the lake. They can be seen by
looking SE from the end of Southworth road. I can't remember when I
last saw this species on the lake.

Yesterday i filled my feeders for the first time since late May. This
AM at 8 o-clock I had a large flock including several TT Titmice,
