[cayugabirds-l] Black-bellied plover at Myers

2024-05-22 Thread Kevin C Packard
Hi everyone,

Just wanted to pass this along. There has been a black-bellied plover in
breeding plumage on the gravel bar just off of Myers Point this morning along
with a ruddy turnstone, one semipalmated and several least sandpipers. The
plover seemed content on the gravel bar while I was watching through 9:45am.
Hopefully it will stick around this morning for others to see.

 Cheers,

 Kevin

Re: Re:[cayugabirds-l] Blue Grosbeak

2024-04-26 Thread Kevin C Packard
For those who are wondering, the blue grosbeak has not been seen since
Wednesday. Possibly the cold air has made it think of new places to go.

Many thanks to Tom for his hospitality in welcoming so many birders to admire
this rarity!

Though, Sandy, I do see them listed as endangered for NY according to the DEC.
Perhaps someone who knows wildlife laws here in NY could speak to this.

[cayugabirds-l] Red crossbill irruption year?

2024-04-02 Thread Kevin C Packard
Hi fellow birders,

I've been having some success in finding red crossbills recently, mainly where
the Finger Lakes Trail crosses Michigan Hollow Rd (the N crossing of the two at
the creek), but also today on the FLT near where it crosses Travor Rd in Danby.
Jay McGowan was kind enough to tell me that I had been observing both Type 2
and Type 12 crossbills at Michigan Hollow. I'm curious if this is considered an
irruption year for this species. Whether or no, it's quite satisfying hearing
(and today finally getting good looks at) crossbills. Happy birding!

Cheers,

 Kevin Packard

PS: Be advised that the Michigan Hollow location is much more accessible.
Travor Rd is driveable is you have a jeep or similar good ground clearance
vehicle that does not mind poor dirt roads. I don't, so I just walked the FLT
from S Danby Rd (2.5 miles round trip) instead. Ebird lists at

Re: [cayugabirds-l] River otters at Jennings Pond, Danby

2024-01-27 Thread Kevin C Packard
I wouldn't be surprised if these otters also were found in the Michigan Hollow
marsh. The SW outflow from the pond drains there and is secluded from people.

Yes, I have seen the otters there at this time of year last year as well (only
started bird watching at the pond in the spring of 2022). I've seen them
sporadically during the warmer months too in the past year.

Good to know others could enjoy seeing them!

 Cheers,

 Kevin

Their home range must be at least a few square miles, so the otters at Jennings
Pond may be the same ones that hang out in the big Michigan Hollow sedge marsh,
about a mile south of the pond.

Incidentally, beaver have recently repaired the old dam that controls the
mile-long marsh, and the water level has returned to its former height, which
may again attract Marsh Wrens, Rails, Bitterns and Grebes…

2024-01-27 Thread Kevin C Packard
I realize this is a bird list and not a mammal list, but I wanted to share that
there is good viewing of a pair of river otters over at Jennings Pond in Danby.
They were out this morning lounging on the ice in the middle of the pond, ice
fishing, and seemed to be enjoying themselves.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Fish crow vs American crow ID by merlin

2023-07-01 Thread Kevin C Packard
Thank you Anne and Jared for sharing on this question. I really like your
suggestion Anne in that these could be juveniles begging. The calls were
nasally but seemed a bit longer than the short 'uh' or 'uh-uh" fish crow calls
I'm used to hearing around Cayuga Lake.

As for the fish comment - well yes on the levity a little  Dead fish appear
on the shoreline from time to time (big kills sporadically in the spring), but
I don't know their feeding habits very well, so I assumed that they like being
near waterbodies as it is place to scavenge dead fish or other creatures.

Cheers,

 Kevin

Hi Kevin

I think I see why Merlin was back n forth.

I think your audio is of a demanding American crow fledgling whose nasal begs
come close to the slightly down slurred and nasal ‘simple version’ fish crow.
If you listen toward the end of the recording , you can hear a quickening of
the notes and a slightly ‘gobbling’ sound. That is the fledgling continuing to
beg as it is getting fed—beg calls with a parental bill in its mouth and
swallowing at the same time.

Lots of American Crow fledglings out or just coming out now.

I assume that the comment on fish in the pond was a bit of levity? Maybe it is
worth mentioning that Fish Crows don’t ‘fish’ Or particularly seek fish as far
as I know. But they do seem to like shoreline or river edge scavenging, rather
than foraging on lawns like American crows. And also, less popular with humans,
they seem to be good at finding bird nests in trees.

Anyway—that’s my Id of the crow voice on your audio.

Best, Anne

[cayugabirds-l] Too late for snipe?

2023-05-20 Thread Kevin C Packard
Hi everyone,

I was at Jennings Pond as usual this morning and heard a brief
'whoit-whoit-whoit' call (no recordings alas), sung slowly and deliberately,
not as a whinny that reminded me of a snipe. Ebird is saying this would be rare
now (last eBird report for the county on May 11). I'm reluctant to trip off a
rare bird alert for one five to six second string of notes emanating from
hundreds of feet away. Anyone have any thoughts on the likelihood (or not) of
snipe coming from cattails/alder/wet pond edge at this date? The rest of the
eBird report is

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Goldfinch mishap

2022-10-04 Thread Kevin C Packard
A few years ago at Salt Point I found a tufted titmouse hanging upside down
with its feathers stuck to a Virginia stickseed plant. I freed it and it stayed
quietly on the ground for a bit. It was too tired from its ordeal to have the
energy to fly away, though when I came back in half an hour it had left.
Hopefully your goldfinch flew off after a rest too.

 Best,

gathered the bird in my hand and gently pulled its' stuck wing feathers away.
I half expected it to fly away—but instead it sort of fluttered to the

I had several burdock plants attached to my arm! I’ve heard of hummingbirds

[cayugabirds-l] Waterfowl at Stewart Park

2022-03-16 Thread Kevin C Packard
Hi everyone,

I i just wanted to share that there is a nice collection of waterfowl off of
Sewart Park this morning. No rarities, but a nice collection of wood ducks,
shovelers, green-winged teal (I had counted 84), ring-necked duck, bufflehead,
gadwall, scaup, mergansers, and a few wigeon and one pintail, to go along with
the regulars at the park. I found good viewing at the shore north of the Swan
Pond. I'm willing to bet the numbers are higher than what I counted as there's
quite a lot of ducks and they move around. Nice birding altogether!

 Cheers,

 Kevin

[cayugabirds-l] Crow predators at night?

2022-02-25 Thread Kevin C Packard
 Hi everyone,

Yesterday evening I found the remains of crow in my front yard, mostly
consumed by something the night before. We have foxes in the neighborhood, but
I thought that crows would roost in trees at night. Would owls attack an adult
crow? Curious on thoughts from others that know this species well.

 Best,

 Kevin

[cayugabirds-l] Ducks and blue-headed vireo at Hog Hole

2022-01-04 Thread Kevin C Packard
Hi everyone,

The conditions are really nice on the lake today with calm water, little wind,
and warm sun to view a number of different species of ducks. From Hog Hole a
large Aythya raft is viewable (bring your scope), with many hundred redhead,
greater and lesser scaup, ring-necked ducks, common and hooded mergansers,
coots, mallards, black duck, bufflehead, two pintail drakes, and one
canvasback. There's also a continuing blue-headed vireo that was quite out in
the open in the boxelders on the west edge of the Hog Hole woods seen along the
path ( 42.6098, -76.5187). All in all, it makes for rather nice birding.

 Cheers,

This evening during the thunderstorm I stopped by Cass Park to check on the
Merlin nest by the Dog Park and saw three banded fledglings hanging around the
trees in the area of the boat launch. They were definitely working on their
landing, perching, and flying skills, and being seriously challenged by the
wind. Sometimes they called repeatedly, but I never saw a parent nearby. Looks
like they will be around for a while, as they did not move far.

[cayugabirds-l] Recent storm damage at Stewart Park

2021-06-22 Thread Kevin C Packard
Dear birders,

From what I saw on the Ithaca Times and in social media today, there appears
to be significant damage to the trees at Stewart Park from yesterday's storms.
While I hope that it won't have a major impact on our local birds that nest
there, the park itself is closed until further notice while the city clears the
damaged trees.

[cayugabirds-l] Common nighthawks at Jennings Pond

2021-05-31 Thread Kevin C Packard
Hi everyone,

For those who are interested, if you come to Jennings Pond (in Danby) in
the evening you should be able to see nighthawks zooming about. I was just
there (around 9pm) and had a real nice show, seeing three nighthawks swooping
around back and forth over the pond's surface. By standing still, they would
fly right by me at very close (< 5 feet) range. Really, this was the best
views I've ever had of nighthawks. 

Happy birding,

Maybe a new nest?

[cayugabirds-l] Yellowlegs at Jennings Pond

2021-04-27 Thread Kevin C Packard
Hi everyone,

This morning I found a pair of what I believe to be greater yellowlegs at
Jennings Pond. They are sitting on the beaver lodge in the NW corner of the
pond (the end nearer to Bald Hill Rd). The plumage is dark but they have yellow
(not green) legs and showed white rump patches when flushed from the pond edge
at Bald Hill Rd. The bills look slightly upturned, so I'm thinking these are
greater rather than lesser yellowlegs. The birds were still there when I left
the pond a few minutes ago. So if you are in the Danby area, feel free to check
them out. For what it is worth, there's also a pied-billed grebe paddling
around the same corner of the pond.

 Happy birding,

 Kevin

[cayugabirds-l] Long-tailed ducks at Dryden Lake

2021-03-26 Thread Kevin C Packard
Hi everyone,

This morning I took a walk at Dryden Lake and am happy to say that the lake is
ice free. I found a flock of ring-necked ducks and scaup, and with them a pair
of long-tailed ducks. The flock flew off the lake after one of the local bald
eagles came too close, but they circled around and were still on the lake when
I left this morning. There's also three horned grebes and a scattering of
mergansers, bufflehead, and a few other ducks (wigeon, wood duck, mallards).
The Jim Schug trail is free of ice and it makes for a pleasant walk. Even heard
my first eastern phoebe for the year along it.

 Happy birding!

I haven’t found many good areas for field birds this winter in Tompkins Co.
Indian Field Rd. road shoulders have been OK, but the road is very busy making
viewing difficult.

Storm Road / Holden Rd. intersection area, in Lansing, is the best so far. The
nearby farm is spreading manure / bedding on the snow parallel to Holden Rd.
for about 0.1 mi. The best viewing is from Storm Rd.

I was here yesterday and didn’t see much, but the spread was new. Today it is a
larger area. There are Horned Larks, Snow Buntings and I’ve saw one Lapland
Longspur, before the tractor stirred thing up. I suspect it will get better as
the day goes on.

[cayugabirds-l] Multitude of snow geese at Fenner Rd

2021-01-15 Thread Kevin C Packard
Hi everyone,

After seeing eBird reports yesterday, I went to check out a flock of snow
geese at Fenner Rd, which is near Milligan Station but on the east side of Rt
34B. There are literally thousands of snow geese in the fields north of Fenner
Rd, mostly white morph but a few blue morphs mixed in. I didn't see any Ross'
geese but I couldn't reliably scan such a huge flock. If anyone wants to try
their luck or wants to tally large numbers of birds at once, it is quite a neat
sight to see. I guessed 5,000 geese but will gladly revise this number if there
are folks who can judge better from the photos on my eBird checklist:

[cayugabirds-l] Ducks at Dryden Lake

2020-12-02 Thread Kevin C Packard
I took a short walk over at Dryden Lake, and found an interesting collection of
ducks on an otherwise cold December day. There were 6 American wigeon, together
with buffleheads, common and hooded mergansers, and a collection of mallards.
Wigeon haven't been reported in eBird at Dryden Lake since late March, so if
you are passing through (and especially if you have a scope), feel free to
check them out.

[cayugabirds-l] Interesting article on knot numbers

2020-10-20 Thread Kevin C Packard
Hi everyone,

I know this is way outside our local birding interest, but I saw this neat
article on over 140,000 knots being observed this past weekend in the Norfolk
coast of the United Kingdom. What a sight that it must be!

 Happy birding,

 Kevin

[cayugabirds-l] Red Crossbills at Travor Rd

2020-07-11 Thread Kevin C Packard
Hi everyone,

I wanted to share with you that this past Thursday I observed two red
crossbills on Travor Rd in the Danby State Forest, just a few steps from the
parking area for the Finger Lakes Trail on Travor Rd, where Travor Rd takes a
turn to the south. They flew up from a small wetland/stream west of Travor Rd
to pine tree on the edge of the road, after I was pishing after some
yellowthroats singing in the bushes and was turning back to the parking area. I
had a nice view of an adult female, and took some photos (a bit out of range
for good pics with a 55mm lens). They left together quickly, with the female
making kip calls as it left, flying back down the stream to the SW of Travor
Rd. I didn't try to follow them through the woods. Instead I made a recording
from the road, but am not sure if any crossbill vocalizations are in it (many
birds are singing together). The pics and recording are posted on eBird. The
location for the checklist is given at Durfee Hill Rd, since I hiked up on the
FLT from Durfee Hill Rd to Travor Rd and back. Travor Rd _should_ be driveable
to the parking area. I hadn't tried it though, and with the recent rain there
may be muddy spots on the road to deal with. With a good vehicle though, the
spot 42°18'37.3"N, 76°25'32.8"W(42.310346, -76.425767) can be accessed
without hiking as I did.

  Cheers,

 Kevin

[cayugabirds-l] Barred owls at Lake Treman

2020-05-22 Thread Kevin C Packard
Hi everyone,

A barred owl nest with nestling peering out was observed in a basswood tree
cavity on the Treman Lake trail loop on the east side of the lake. Posted to
ebird with photos (a little blurry as the distance was a little too much for my
camera lens) and audio recording of adult parent.

Cheers,

Kevin
