[cayugabirds-l] Blue Bird Results

2011-08-22 Thread Kurt Falvey
For the second year in a row we have not lost any hatched baby birds in the
nest boxes with ¼ inch wire mesh…4 inches above the bottom. Before using
the wire mesh we lost many baby birds to blow flies each year. This year
17 bluebirds, 20 tree swallows and 8 chickadees fledged.

For those who may be interested in building your own nest box…the dimensions
and pictures can be found at www.BrokenRoadFarms.com.

Happy Birding.

Once in a while I catch a sighting of a Bobolink in a far off field but this
morning I was treated to a male Bobolink working the grass in our back yard.

coop.

[cayugabirds-l] Baby Bluebirds

2011-04-20 Thread Kurt Falvey
Well we have our first two baby bluebirds…3 eggs haven’t hatched yet. Last
year this pair hatched eggs on 5/6/2010. The nest is dry and clean even
with this windy and rainy spring…the ¼ inch mesh on which the nest sits is
about 4 inches off the bottom.

We regularly fed this pair mealworms and a suet/blueberry/raisin mix all
winter and continue to do so…I am guessing this may be partly the reason
for such and early laying of eggs and hatching.

[cayugabirds-l] Red Tail with Crow

2011-04-04 Thread Kurt Falvey
We have a pair of Red-tailed Hawks that have been around for several years.
I have seen one carrying a grouse, rabbit, mice, and even have a great
picture of one of them snatching a wounded starling off the snow.but
yesterday one few by with a crow in its talons with 20 plus crows in hot
pursuit.I have heard of Red-tails going after young crows still in the
nest and am wondering how this Red-tail came to get this crow?

If it was not injured.would a Red-tail go after an adult crow sitting on
eggs?...any other thoughts?

Happy Birding!

[cayugabirds-l] Question

2011-01-31 Thread Kurt Falvey
We built a Kestrel house and a Screech Owl house and put them out last
spring.with no takers.now they are occupied by squirrels. Our question
is.will a Kestrel or Screech Owl dislodge a squirrel from a prospective
nesting sight? Or are we going to have to build more nest boxes?

Thanks.

[cayugabirds-l] Bluebird Nest Box Results

2010-11-23 Thread Kurt Falvey
Bluebird nest box with ¼” wire 4” above bottom results…

I had mentioned in the Spring, that I had replaced all my bluebird boxes
with a new box that had ¼” mesh wire approximately 4” above the floor of the
box and I am extremely happy to report that for the first time we did not
lose one bird to blow flies, including tree swallows.

The nests themselves seemed to stay much dryer and the only maintenance I
had to do was to remove some of the nesting materials that fell or was
pushed beneath the wire mesh.

Having said that I don’t know if it was a bad year for blow flies or if
there were some other factors that I did not account for but it is extremely
encouraging.

I have posted the dimensions and pictures of the boxes at
www.BrokenRoadFarms.com for those who may be interested in building your own
nest boxes.

One other note…one of the pairs of bluebirds nested about 50 yard from our
house and would come to our deck for meal worm on a regular basis…we would
whistle every time we fed them and eventually they would come when we
whistled. Our friends and neighbors enjoyed seeing them up close. And when
the young fledged the parents brought them to the feeder…It was a fun year.

I will report next fall as well.

Happy Birding!

[cayugabirds-l] Blue Bird Eggs and Nest

2010-05-03 Thread Kurt Falvey
Two weeks ago I checked our Blue Bird nest boxes and found three sitting
pairs of Blue Birds with 5 eggs in each.today I checked the same boxes and
found one nest box with the eggs and nest gone. Everything was normal in
and around the box except the nest and eggs were gone.has anyone ever
experience that? Would wrens do that?
