[cayugabirds-l] Off topic - Alaska related inquiry
I'm looking for George West's book, A Birder's Guide to Alaska and am wondering if any readers have one I could borrow (to look through, not travel with). I'm mostly interested in the Anchorage area. Any help, much appreciated. [cayugabirds-l] Swallows galore
Saw plenty of swallows yesterday as we made our way to and around Montezuma. The first sighting was from the Visitor Center parking lot, a mixed flock of Barn, Tree and Northern Rough-winged. They were busy flitting around the crane statue, presumably picking up insects There were swallows at most stops we made including along the wildlife drive, May's Point, Morgan Road, Carncross Road. On our way home via the east side of the lake we could see swallows flying along the surface of the very choppy water. They seemed to be picking up insects from the water's surface (?) and staying low as they gradually made their way north. We saw them at just about every spot we had a view of the water (Wells Boat house, Long Point and wherever the road came close to the shore). We didn't see many other small birds in flight all day, just raptors. [cayugabirds-l] Snow Geese, ducks
I took a quick trip up the east side of the lake and then down to the State Park. The usual sites were quiet. When I had a view of the lake I could see white rafts in the middle. The water at the visitor center is opening up and there were a lot of Canada Geese and a variety of ducks. Down to the park - there is still ice at the marina/dock. The ice shelf at the shore line further south has melted. I had a pleasant viewing experience of several Gadwalls close to the shore with a variety of other ducks bobbing around. The two rafts of Snow Geese were moving around a fair amount. There was a gathering of Snow Geese on the ice at Knox-Marcellus and a flock flitting around on the north side of 31 at the Potato Fields. [cayugabirds-l] Carolina Wren
Reynold the wren has been a regular around the feeders and has totally taken advantage of the mix I have kept out for him (lard, peanut butter, chick mash etc.). The Titmice have also been feeding on it. Yesterday, he beckoned in the Spring-like weather by starting his Teakettle song. Up to this point, all I'd hear were little chatters. And, this confirms it's a male. Here's hoping he finds a mate and hangs around. Other highlights included two Common Terns perched with a Cormorant on a log in the middle of the lake, two Osprey, two Eagles, a Kestrel, numerous Swamp Sparrows, Towhees, the regular raft of Common Mergansers, and one Bufflehead. We had to do some dodging along the trail as a pleasant Saturday morning brought out too many walkers and bikers to count. Weekdays one has the place more or less to oneself. [cayugabirds-l] Dryden Lake
Still lots of Common Mergansers hanging out on the lake. On Wednesday there was a pair of Long Tailed Ducks in the mix. Was pleased to have found Song, Swamp and Field Sparrows. There is a pair of very busy and vocal Kingfishers in the vicinity as well. Yesterday there were two Eagles at the nest. One flew off while I spied. It certainly looks to me as if there is feeding activity going on. The remaining adult was not sitting on the nest but rather, at the edge. There was head movement that I imagined was that of ripping up little pieces of fish and feeding the young. On my return walk from the Purvis Preserve section I could not see anything on the nest (or the lake) due to a white out of a snow storm. [cayugabirds-l] Dryden Lake
Lots of activity on Dryden Lake. There were two Red Necked Grebes with a dozen or so Bonaparte's Gulls and three Ruddy Ducks. A group of Common Mergansers was fun to watch as they would all of a sudden disappear and then pop up a few moments later, obviously enjoying a meal. I saw an Osprey nab a fish two different times. Not sure if it was the same Osprey or not. Word has it the Eagles have hatched. I could not confirm this although I did see one adult standing at the edge of the nest, fussing about. Lots of swallows (more than Tree? Not sure). [cayugabirds-l] Dryden Lake - Eagle, Mergansers
Enjoyed the sunshine this afternoon as I walked along the trail. It helped with the chill in the air. Saw Hooded, Common and Red-breasted Mergansers, numerous Bufflehead, one pie-billed grebe. Checked out the Eagle nest at the far end of the lake to discover it's occupied by an Eagle. [cayugabirds-l] A most unusual Robin's nest
Earlier this year, a Robin that had built a nest on my infrequently used porch abandoned the nest and left four eggs behind. She was apparently distraught over the human activity. Fast forward a couple months - I return to the porch to discover that she had returned to the nest and had two chicks that were about to fledge, which they did. I checked out the nest to discover that she had added to the nest and started over again. The original eggs are encased in nesting material at the bottom of the nest. [cayugabirds-l] Woodcock?
I was out on snowshoes in my backyard around 7:30 last night (dusk). I was going down towards the stream when a bird in flight caught my eye. It was headed up the stream bed and it landed out of sight near the stream. It made no noise - neither vocalizations nor wing noise. It appeared to be football-shaped and not a very big bird (large robinesque). There is nearby a known habit for Woodcock and I'm thinking that's what it might have been. [cayugabirds-l] Father's Day Oriole
The bird activity in my yard has been most entertaining of late. The Redwings were most disturbed by what turned out to be a weasel patrolling around the pond yesterday. Meanwhile, on the other side of the pond, I heard chattering from what turned out to be an Oriole nest. Needless to say I was thrilled. Yesterday, I watched her do most of the feeding while Dad chased off the Blue Jay. RE: [cayugabirds-l] Mrs Robin reuses her nest!
There is a Robin’s nest in my (rural) carport that has been used for numerous years by Robins and there have been multiple broods in any given year. One year the nest fell down but it was rebuilt by a better nest builder. Right now there is a second batch incubating or hatched; I can’t quite tell yet. There is lots of commotion in the carport as she is sharing it with a family of Barn Swallows with five little ones who have just fledged, but keep coming back to the rafters to roost. [cayugabirds-l] Sandhill Cranes at Martens Tract
Three of us took the day to travel around Cayuga Lake today. The GREAT HORNED OWL chicks cooperated for good views for starters. We saw COMMON LOONS and HORNED GREBES at Meyers. There were numerous ducks at many of the stopping points along the east side of the lake. There were EAGLES on nests in Aurora, Mud Lock and Armitage Road. I lost count of the OSPREY on nests at many familiar spots. There is now a lot more open water in Montezuma. Eagles and geese were using the huts of Muskrat Town for perches; gulls were scrapping with each other for food. There were plenty of GREAT BLUE HERONS too. The most common ducks to be found included RING NECK, PINTAIL, NORTHERN SHOVELER. BUFFLEHEAD. We saw all the mergansers with the RED BREASTED MERGANSER at Long Point SP. The last of our stops above Montezuma was at the Martens Tract. All seemed quiet and we were getting ready to leave when we heard the squawk of the SANDHILL CRANES. They first appeared in clear view walking along the open roadway next to the pond. Soon, they were airborne and circled around low overhead as we stood in the parking area - four of them. Such a treat to hear and see. We made it to the creamery before they closed for a sandwich and ice cream. Good day. [cayugabirds-l] Redwings like clockwork and an unusual one
When I see the reports on this list of arrivals, I have learned what that means for when I can expect arrivals in my backyard on Beam Hill. Right on schedule for arrival here, Redwing Scout showed up on Wednesday; the gang of guys showed up at the feeders this morning. At first I saw a half dozen or so at the tray feeder. I then looked at the willow tree to find dozens more. Back to the feeder tray - there was an one among the flock with unusual markings. He looked much like the others, complete with epaulets of yellow but he also had a yellowish/orange throat. The head and rest of the body was all black. He certainly stood out from the crowd. [cayugabirds-l] Hermits thrushes
I was rewarded this afternoon to find four Hermit Thrushes in the woods behind my house. They were stealth but very busy picking through the leaf litter. I first came upon two of them in one section of woods. I stopped and watched them for several minutes. They too were curious , coming to within 15 feet of me. I eventually broke the spell and carried on, only to come upon another pair in a different section of woods. A Yellow- bellied Sapsucker made an appearance and drummed in an otherwise quiet woods. [cayugabirds-l] Harris Park today
We made a quick trip up the east side of the lake today. With more ice having melted, the birds are further out than they were a week ago. From Harris Park, we saw a few ducks including numerous BUFFLEHEAD and a pair of GOLDENEYE. We also saw an EAGLE perched in a tree on the near shore. In the distance we could see SNOW GEESE when they took to the air only to think about landing again. In keeping Mena's experience at hand, we decided not to go to Cayuga Lake State Park in hopes of a closer look. There were a large number of ducks off in the distance as well. A Mud Lock Eagle was in the tree with the nest. A quick trip through Montezuma's wildlife drive afforded us views of numerous gulls, about a dozen GREAT BLUE HERONS, two muskrats and dozens upon dozens of muskrat huts. [cayugabirds-l] Dryden Lake today
A walk along the trail from Weber St. to the end of the lake was pleasant and productive for birds. There were numerous HOODED MERGANSERS, RED HEADED DUCKS, a pair of CANVASBACKS and MALLARDS along with geese and beaver. We rustled up two WOOD DUCKS near the far end of the lake. There were quite a few ROBINS, one PHOEBE for highlights. The lake is open at the park end; it is filled with CANADA GEESE. Enjoyed close ups of a FOX SPARROW today at the feeder in my yard. [cayugabirds-l] Gray crowned rosy finch
Front page news of my hometown newspaper- the Boonville Herald - features the adventures of the Gray Crowned Rosy Finch in Locust Grove. It even made mention in George Capron's column, excerpts from calls he receives at the local radio station. Am happy to share if anyone is interested in seeing the article. Unfortunately, I didn't get to see the little visitor. [cayugabirds-l] Beam Hill Red-shouldered Hawks, Siskins
The Red-shouldered Hawks have returned to Beam Hill (west) and are making their presence known with lots of vocalizations and aerial displays. There are at least two who have been making regular appearances. My neighbor saw one with nesting material this morning. I witnessed one land at my pond's edge and snag a frog. The hawk took off about a minute later, into the nearby woods. It's been a couple days since I've heard or seen the flock of Pine Siskins who have been hanging out for the past few weeks. Their calls have only added to the oddness of the times. I enjoy gardening all the time keeping an ear to the bird song in the air. Siskins are typically long gone by the time I'm able to get into the garden. A year ago, we were skiing to the Robin calls.
