[cayugabirds-l] New yard bird-g-c-kinglet

We had a cheerful and bright (almost neon orange) golden-crowned kinglet today
eating insects and singing in our old pine tree. A new yard bird for us.

[cayugabirds-l] Western tanager remains

2016-03-05 Thread M & K Mannella
I trekked to campus this afternoon, along with Rueben Stoltzfus and his family,
to see the Western Tanager. We found it (life bird for Reuben) in the same
location, moving from behind the yews to the alcove at the store entrance
eating where someone had placed a handful of sunflower seeds on the ground near
a wall of ivy.

It is quite tolerant of people, and stayed in one location for a good five
minutes or so, and provides excellent close views. At one point we were no more
than a few feet away looking over the wall into the yews.

We were able to make out some orange showing around the eyes, on the forehead,
and around the beak.

[cayugabirds-l] Thank you, birding community

2015-12-13 Thread M & K Mannella
After a thoughtful email exchange this morning with a member of this list, I am
reminded how grateful I am for the opportunity to interact with this birding
community.

Thank you all for your eloquent and informative birdwatching stories and
reports. I am a better birder because of the words you share.

Thank you for being patient, thoughtful, and respectful educators -for using
the word improbable rather than impossible- and for using the moment to teach
rather than to simply correct.

And lastly, Thank you for sharing your scopes, smartphones, field guides, your
insights, knowledge, and enthusiasm under all weather conditions and roadside
circumstances. I am so happy to see you out there.

Have a wonderful winter birdwatching-- and a big welcome back to the Seneca

[cayugabirds-l] Short-eared owl

2015-12-06 Thread M & K Mannella
This evening I went searching for SHORT-EARED OWLS in an area where I thought
had potentially good habitat. I did see one at sunset (which was awesome this
evening) in the field across from this address:
9554–9558 Townsendville Rd in
Interlaken. This is the same area where I frequently saw a Rough-legged hawk
last winter.

Can someone verify that this is still in the basin?

As I was driving around I realized that quite more corn and cover crops are
being grown in the last few years where there used to be rough habitat.

[cayugabirds-l] Screech owl and eclipse

2015-09-28 Thread M & K Mannella
On both Saturday and Sunday morning we heard the whinny call of a screech owl
just before 6:am. Seems we are a stopping ground for screechies on the move

While watching the eclipse from our driveway we had a super clear and cloudless
view. The Milky Way was bright and we saw two amazing shooting stars. Gorgeous

[cayugabirds-l] Yale farm road today

2015-03-20 Thread M K Mannella
While searching for the snowy owls at 11:45 in the blowing snow today on Yale
Farm Road (no luck) I was lucky to get really good views of 2 NORTHERN HARRIERS
- a male and a female-- and a ROUGHLEGGED HAWK all hunting the same field east
and south of Mcgrane. Several times they were all within my binocular view at
the same time and easily seen with out the bins. It got even more interesting
when a raven joined the party and started mobbing the female harrier for a
short spell.

New feeder addition: one tufted titmouse and several more red-winged
blackbirds.

[cayugabirds-l] Pheasants and other August birds

2014-08-17 Thread M K Mannella
Some interesting sightings over the last couple of days-- seems like months
since I have been birdwatching!

After some absence, I hear white breasted nuthatches and a baltimore oriole
singing in my front yard. I wonder have they been around but silent or have
they been on the move and back again?

I found a cedar waxwing sitting on a nest in a small maple tree, and both she
and her mate have been very vocal.

On Wycoff road I flushed from the side ditch a female ring-necked pheasant with
at least 4 chicks.

Our dozen Barn swallows are still here and feeding their second batch of
fledglings. I have seen large gatherings of bank swallows on the telephone
wires.

Northern mockingbirds also feeding their second round.

And thanks to everyone who posted about the Gallinule families at MNWR- I was
finally able to add them on my life list. I did not expect them to be so
beautiful.

Be well and keep moving!

[cayugabirds-l] Black-billed cuckoo

2014-06-13 Thread M K Mannella
Strange as it may seem (at least it does to me) we have been regularly hearing
a black-billed cuckoo here in farm country. Just this evening we saw the
elusive bird fly from the telephone wire into the willow and then I lost it in
the maple tree. I figured it to be more of a woodland bird, but there it was
surrounded by barns and uncut, wet hay fields. I am so happy to have finally
seen it, thanks to my husband who noticed a bird whose tail was not flicking up
and down like our resident mockingbird.

[cayugabirds-l] Bobolinks

For a few reasons, including the weather, we have more unplowed and unmowed and
ungrazed fields this year around the house giving us quite a few chattering

are more than our usual one or two that just pass through. They move so quickly

[cayugabirds-l] Help with fox vs song sparrow id

2014-05-03 Thread M K Mannella
I have small sparrows under the feeders. The are heavily streaked on the face
and body, with a prominent spot on the breast. My first impression is that they
are song sparrows but then they do the backward hop to scrape at the decaying
leaves. My questions to anyone who can offer some advice on id:
Do song sparrows dig like that?
Are fox sparrows always reddish? (These birds are not)

[cayugabirds-l] Rt 89 snowy

2014-01-01 Thread M K Mannella
One SNOWY OWL sitting on the snowy patch on a bank 15 ft from the road. . On rt
89, Approx 1 mile south of 5/20 intersection. On the west side in snow and
brush with perfect views of the cayuga marshes. At 10:30 a.m. and still there
now. My map gives me the address of 2077 rt 89 seneca falls. It is just north
of that address. Careful- there is a bad bend and a dip in the road for those
traveling southward. Stopping is safest on the east side of the road :-). I
have a somewhat decent picture of anyone wants to see it.

[cayugabirds-l] Short eared owl-ovid

2013-11-24 Thread M K Mannella
At 3:25 this afternoon while sitting at the kitchen table, a movement outside
caught my eye. It was a SHORT EARED OWL hunting in the pasture next to my house
(hall road) on the south side. We got great views of it hunting (tho a little
blurry thru my husbands bins since mine are on their way to nikon for repair-
ugh!)
. It would hover in one place four 4 or 5 seconds then either dive or move to
another vantage point often sitting on a roadside fence post. We had great
views from the second floor and watched until he flew west at around 3:40. I
was just getting ready to go for a drive to look for owls and this one came to
me!

Juncos have arrived at the feeder and snow buntings are here too.
Good birding!

Today afternoon while I was seeing some awesome insects like Green Darners
and Black Saddlebags and a Ixodontia wasp carrying long grass blades (7 to
8 inches long) to some location under my office window, I watched an adult
Bald Eagle circle around in front of my office window for a few minutes
before heading off towards Lab of O I presume!

Finally, they are here. The Fireflies! About 30 + flying in the front and
back yard. Till yesterday I had not seen them, so I was wondering if
changes in the plant compositions changed the habitat for them. But no, I
think they just were late in emerging this year. I went out to switch on
moth lights, and was glad to observe fourth of July fireworks in the yard!

I know Karen Edelstein posted seeing them a couple of weeks ago. Has anyone
else seen them earlier this year?

[cayugabirds-l] Orchard oriole, barn swallows, and meadowlarks

2012-06-29 Thread M K Mannella

The ORCHARD ORIOLE (I assume the same one) that nested in our yard was back
this morning singing loudly from a large maple. In May he was actively
defending a nest then all went quiet. Not sure if there was a successful fledge
or not. Today is the first time I've seen or heard him since the first days of
June. What a nice surprise to hear his joyful song again!

BARN SWALLOWS are fledging as I type.at least one nest has seven heads
sticking out this morning.

And we have a MEADOWKARK in the general vicinity that I can hear from my yard.
That is a very rare event. Perhaps they like the army worms..

[cayugabirds-l] Short-eared Owls - Ovid

2011-01-23 Thread M K Mannella
I've been seeing, very regularly, 3 short-eared owls on Wycoff Road in Ovid.
This evening, however, there were 4. These owls are quite vocal and it is a
real treat to see them and hear them. Wycoff Road is between Hall Road and
Rock River. Park on Wycoff, just east of Rock River, and look east. The
owls rise up from behind the Beardsley farm on Rock River cross back and
forth across Wycoff, often perching on a fence post. Those of you may
remember the farm from the owl trip two years ago--they come back every
year.
