[cayugabirds-l] report from Reuben

2016-02-17 Thread Mary E. Winston
Reuben called the front desk to report that the Snowy Owl is still being seen
at the same place - corner of Reese Road and Sybolt Road (don't know if I spelt
that correctly) and a Lapland Longspur is being seen on Sybolt road a few miles
down from where the Owl is being seen.

Hi John, Gary, David and all,

Then every municipality, village, town, city, county, borough, etcetera that
wanted to get out from under the state's exclusive authority to regulate
hunting could easily do so, because even though local "no hunting" ordinances
are not valid, local "no discharge" ordinances would trump DEC's authority?

Did you know that Ithaca's "no discharge" code is not limited to firearms? It
includes projectile weapons of diverse kinds (air guns, spring guns,
slingshots, and any other instruments or weapons). If that's valid, then it
achieves an effective ban on hunting by any means except perhaps running down
your prey and throttling it with your bare hands! :-)

Yes, I believe that is exactly what it means. For example, hunting can involve

Hi Chris,

I have a bird question, and since you're at the Lab of O now, I'm hoping it's
ok to start with you?

My son (undergrad) found a hurt pigeon (broken wing?) inside a building on
campus last night, about 10:30. What's the best thing for the non-birder to do
in that situation? He wanted to do something to help it, but had no idea what.

Thanks-

There is a multi-colored pigeon walking along West Northview Rd, off
Coddington, banded, can't seem to fly but quite tame. It was here yesterday,
barely walking according to the person who saw it yesterday. I couldn't find
it when I got home yesterday, and he called the Lab of O and was told his
message would be passed along to someone.

It is still here. I have a pic of it if someone wants me to text it to them.
Not sure what else to do.

Mine are here year round. One in particular is always protective of the
cedar/juniper berries is the guardian of the hill trying to drive away even
large flocks of starlings. Last winter, for the 1st time, it was eating suet!!
Other mockers live/stay in the thick stand of cedars a block away.

We often see a mocker down along 90 at Levannah a couple other places along
90.

Snow geese, noisily gabbing to each other, went to the lake by the thousands
last evening just before dark.

Wishing all our birding friends a very merry Christmas.

Interesting following the comments on sightings and missing RT Hummingbirds.
Still have our female and juvenile here in Big Flats. No males. Actually, we
are seeing more activity than during the first half of the summer.

I have a theory on why they sometimes seem to disappear in summer, only to
return. I think they have just found a new, better food source that may be
temporary. It comes to mind that insects are good source of protein for them.

So, today, I observed our female RTH land on the stalk below the Monarda didyma
flower head, and pick something from under the dried flower head. I theorize
it is small spiders or similar insects. She then took flight to draw nectar
from the few remaining flowers on adjacent stalks and again perched under a
dried flower head to pick something from underneath.

Subject: [cayugabirds-l] Stranded Common Loon

My sister-in-law lives on Flat Iron Road across from the Goetchius Preserve.
She noticed that a Common Loon must have gotten sucked through a culvert from
the large pond on the other side of the road and is now stuck in a small stream
with only around 100 ft running upsteam in which to take off. I know Loons
need a large body of water for take off. Is there anyone who would know what
to do in this situation?

Thanks for any advice or assistance,
Glen
