[cayugabirds-l] Lab of O hat wanted

2024-05-12 Thread Michael O. Engle
Hi birders,

We want to buy a Lab of O hat with the embroidered sapsucker as a gift, but we
can't seem to find one on the web sites for the Lab or Wild Birds Unlimited
(closed for the visitor center renovation). Thanks for any clues about where we
can get one. Apologies if this is off-topic for the list.

[cayugabirds-l] Osprey fishing

2022-04-10 Thread Michael O. Engle
About an hour ago at Houston Pond in Newman Arboretum, we saw an osprey come in
low, hover, and dive. We didn't see it grab the koi from the main pond, but we
saw the orange koi in the talons of the osprey as it slowly gained altitude and
flew away.

[cayugabirds-l] Red headed woodpecker continues in Palmer Woods this morning

2017-12-04 Thread Michael O. Engle
Just returned from a lengthy viewing of the RH woodpecker at the top of the
knoll on the red trail in Palmer Woods between 9 and 10 am. The same behavior
as Liisa described. It seemed to be feeding wherever it landed.

Thanks to this list I have been able to see an all-time favorite bird for the
first time in this area and also learn of Palmer Woods. Thanks also to the
Botanic Gardens for protecting this bit of predominantly oak woodland. Blue
jays, red-bellied woodpecker(s), and a titmouse were also feeding in the woods
this morning.

Around here I have noticed that this is a good year for fruits, nuts and berry
production. My cedar trees are totally loaded with ripening cedar berries that
are starting to turn blue. The Waxwings will love them. There are lots of
apples, pears, hickory nuts, and a couple neighbors and I let thistles go to
seed (other neighbors think we are nuts). I have not checked out the oaks for
acorns, so don’t know how they are doing, but I think generally it is a good

Hi Pete,

Don't worry about either the Hummingbirds or the Orioles. Food availability is
not really a driver in migration timing for any species. That would be quite
maladaptive. Other cues, including but not limited to day length, sometimes
combined with wind direction, atmospheric pressure, tilt of the Earth (as
evidenced by changing night sky), and other things. I am simply trying to say
that you should not feel guilty at all of leaving your feeders up (or taking
them down) when it suites you. It is wonderful that you feed them when you do,
and I hope you feel good about that. I plan to leave my hummingbird and oriole
feeders up until we have a chance for a hard frost. There is plenty of food
out there now for nectar and fruit feeders, but some late migrants might really
appreciate your feeders when the nights start getting frosty!

Take care

RE:[cayugabirds-l] help determining the time to mow fields

2016-03-14 Thread Michael O. Engle
I'm fine with the discussion taking place on the list. I think it would be
good, in the end, if one person could work directly with the livestock guy I
talked with to advise/train/support him over time. It's certainly a useful kind
of knowledge for livestock producers who manage fields for hay. I wonder if the
county extension folks are a useful resource to help out and provide support
with this topic.

While I can understand why Michael wants to keep the conversation with the

what are the recommendations are for when is the best time to mow hay or grass
fields with regard to protecting nesting grassland birds and their offspring.

I would like this information to be posted on the list.
I often toy with the idea of trying to convince some local landowners here in
Lansing to mow large grass expanses in later summer, but I don't know what the
cut-off date is.

Woodpeckers are going after insects. I am no bird expert -- I don't know if
their presence is an indication of a diseased tree and/or if they are actually
preventing an infestation.
I am sure someone else can educate us.

Hello All,

Has anyone out there had any success ridding themselves and their trees of the
pileated woodpecker? It's almost unbelievable, the pileated woodpecker is
going after some of my mature trees like a wood-chipper machine!

These birds are quickly becoming another species of urban wildlife on my
elimination list. Easier said than done, or so I'm finding, but I wonder if
others have had better experiences.

[cayugabirds-l] Afternoon highlight: Golden-crowned kinglet

2015-12-05 Thread Michael O. Engle
On South Hill Rec Way about an hour ago, a golden-crowned kinglet, about a half
mile west of the Burns Road entrance.

Also, possibly of interest from Monday last, we were surprised to see both a
belted kingfisher and a great blue heron fishing on the reservoir behind
thirty-foot dam and also slightly upstream on Six Mile Creek.

[cayugabirds-l] 2 scarlet tanagers

2014-05-04 Thread Michael O. Engle
We saw two stunningly bright male scarlet tanagers on our midday walk. One was
on South Hill Rec Way about 1/2 mile

east of the Juniper St. entrance (just past the former location of the gate
across the trail).

The second was on the west side of Water Street below the new valve building
for the water plant.

Both were nearly finished molting with small but differently-shaped
light-colored areas toward the back of their otherwise solid scarlet breasts.

The second bird was practically a yard bird for us! A neighborhood bird.

[cayugabirds-l] Robins and cedar waxings

2014-03-06 Thread Michael O. Engle
A large group of robins and cedar waxwings have been coming and going from the
red oak tree just north of Olin Library in the Arts Quad for hours. Many more
cedar waxwings are gathered in the pine trees near the southeast corner of Olin
Library by Stimson Hall right now.

[cayugabirds-l] Bald eagle sighting

2013-06-12 Thread Michael O. Engle
This morning at 6:30 we spotted a bald eagle flying over the 30-foot dam
reservoir on Six Mile Creek. It was being harrassed by a smaller bird. This is
our first eagle sighting at Six Mile. What a treat!

[cayugabirds-l] 2 woodcock displays

2012-03-25 Thread Michael O Engle
Just off South Hill Rec Way at dusk tonight (7:30-7:50pm). One in the large
field north of the temporary wooden footbridge on the trail. The other about
100 yards west of the footbridge and south of the trail. I observed about 8
cycles in the north field before heading back toward town, then heard the other
bird on my way back.

Fantastic!

The planet Mercury is visible close to the western horizon right now. Just
follow the line from the crescent moon downward through bright Venus and
Jupiter. It's a rare occurence.
