Re: [cayugabirds-l] Acopian Bird Savers for windows

2023-01-12 Thread Susan Norvell
There are many individual pieces of vinyl j-channel, 12 ft., $3.98 per piece this afternoon at Home Depot in Ithaca. They are in Aisle 12, standing upright slightly in front of the Bay 9 marker. They are not standing on the floor, but on a divided shelf about 3ft off the floor is self.  Sue NorvellSent from my iPadOn Jan 12, 2023, at 2:11 PM, madonna stallmann wrote:In reply to John and Anne Marie's comments:Actually it's not available at "many" hardware stores. The paracord idea is neat, too!

Hello Bird Lovers!

We are putting together plans for making Acopian Bird Savers for our windows. We've run into a problem with accessing the vinyl j channel. They're only available by the case which is more than we need. Have any of you made your own Acopian
window "dressings"? Would you happen to have extra j channel laying around? OR Is there anyone on this list who would be interested in going in on a case of j channel to make your own Acopian bird savers?

Re:[cayugabirds-l] Pine Siskins

2020-10-21 Thread Susan Norvell
We're swamped with Pine Siskins here in the Belle Sherman area in Ithaca. We
had two about a week ago, and the number has grown since. At least 15 clustered
at the base of our seed feeder yesterday and this morning, while another 6 eat
at the perches. They are nearly impossible to count while on the ground. They
pack so tightly together while feeding it looks a bit like a rugby scrum.

[cayugabirds-l] Dead Birds-Mulberry Tree

2011-06-24 Thread Susan Norvell
We had a mulberry tree behind our garage, when we lived in Hamden, Ct. 30
years ago.

When the fruit was well ripened, and starting to fall to the ground and rot,
we frequently saw robins staggering around and flying unstably, as if drunk,
but the only dead bird was one robin that appeared to have flown into a
nearby building. Our assumption at the time was that the berries might have
fermented. They smelled strongly sweet as they rotted, I recall.

We don't remember any issues with unripe fruit/birds.

[cayugabirds-l] Sat (4/2) at MNWR and otters

2011-04-05 Thread Susan Norvell
(Sorry for the late post)

An eagle was on the nest at Mud Lock, but we saw no other eagles in the
area. Just south of the nest in the Lake we saw 31 RUDDY DUCKS. Most
appeared to be males, but so many were sleeping it was hard to be sure.

At Montezuma's visitor center pool, two male EASTERN BLUEBIRDS did some
sit'n'sally insect hunting from the small evergreens close to the entrance,
whipping across our field of view. Gorgeous! The COMMON TEAL was present
also, as others have noted.

As we watched the teal and the many other ducks, our most surprising
sighting wasn't a bird, but two RIVER OTTERS! They came over the berm at the
back (SW) of the visitor center pond; they were dark, glistenly wet, very
active, and seemed huge in comparison to the ducks and even the geese. They
galumphed over the top of the berm and slid into the water with the ducks.
The ducks seemed only mildly disturbed as the otters started swimming along
the edge of the berm, but two of the Canada Geese immediately took off from
our side of the pond and flew across, honking furiously. The other geese
joined the general honking as the otters retreated back over the berm.

We also saw the four DUNLINS at the shorebird area and the SNOW GEESE at
East Road, as Jay McGowan did, but we missed the Blue Winged Teal. We did
see many pairs of PINTAILS in the muckland area, especially in the flooded
field behind the potato barn.

As we headed home, an OSPREY landed on the nest by Rt 20, just east of the
intersection with Rt 89.

[cayugabirds-l] Young TV feeding, and many RTHA at Game Farm

2011-02-24 Thread Susan Norvell
Yesterday, Wednesday, Feb 23 around noon, a young TV was having lunch near
one of the game farm buildings, visible from Game Farm Rd. It faced us in
bright sunlight, making it easy to see the grayish head without any
discernable red. We couldn't see what it was eating, but watched it
repeatedly mantle over the food to fend off several hopeful crows.

Thirty-eight red-tailed hawks were perched on posts, nets, and the tree at
the Game Farm; and more were in flight or perching in trees bordering the
farm. There must have been 45 to 50 RTHA in total.

[cayugabirds-l] Black terns

2010-06-06 Thread Susan Norvell
Four Black Terns flew over the Mays Point Pool this afternoon about 2pm
while Bud and I were watching a female Wood Duck herd 8 ducklings through
the weeds. Gorgeous, even in lousy weather!

At Montezuma's visitor center we were skunked by the Godwit, which probably
had more sense than we did and had sought shelter. At noon when we arrived
it was very windy with constant misty rain. The weather was marginally
better when we checked back about 4:30, but still no Godwit.

Lots of young bald eagles, but not much else today - unless you count 38
Great Blue Heron in the pool off East Road!
