I saw an adult Red-headed Woodpecker in Sapsucker Woods this morning,

Re: [cayugabirds-l] eBird Question

2021-08-01 Thread Tom Schulenberg
another way to see these observations is to go to the Explore page on
eBird, then select Alerts, and look for eBird alerts for the relevant
region - the ABA area, state of Wisconsin, or whatever. this shows all
recent reports of eBird of rare species, regardless of whether the records
have been confirmed yet by an eBird reviewer. the key limitation here is
'recent', since this will show observations only from the past seven days -
but if what you are looking for is within this window, then this probably
is the most efficient way to tracking down observations of interest.

I believe that the reason is that so far the eBird reviewers for that

[cayugabirds-l] Prothonotary Warbler still at Stewart Park? - maybe!

2021-06-09 Thread Tom Schulenberg
this afternoon I kayaked around the south end of the lake, from Stewart
Park over to Hog Hole. shortly after putting in at Stewart Park, directly
across from the Cascadilla Boat House, I heard what sounded for all the
world like a Prothonotary Warbler singing. it wasn't singing much
(admittedly, it was mid afternoon), but I heard at least four short song
bouts. unfortunately I never saw it, partly because it sang relatively
infrequently (hence difficult to track), and also in part because it seemed
to be moving in the opposite direction from me (the bird was moving
upstream, whereas my kayak party was heading out), so I never got a visual
confirmation. frustrating! but I strongly suspect that there still is a
Prothonotary at the south end of Cayuga Lake, perhaps spending as much or
more time in East Jetty Woods as in Stewart Park.

Re:[cayugabirds-l] history of the Ithaca Christmas Bird Count

2019-01-08 Thread Tom Schulenberg
bits and pieces of the story are coming out, which is great, but I have a
few more questions:

1) does anyone know when Allen's New Year's Day count was initiated? it
takes traditions a while to become, well, traditions, but I'm curious to
know just how early this became a focus of local birding.

2) the CBC had its (modest) origins in 1900, which is to say, before there
could have been much in the way of birding traditions in Ithaca. and it was
the brainchild of Frank Chapman, who was well known both to Allen and
(especially) to Louis Agassiz Fuertes. but I've found no evidence that
either Allen or Fuertes ever experimented with the CBC, even as others
across upstate New York began trying out the CBC from very early on. am I
the only one who thinks there's something odd about this? there's no record
of Allen's or Fuertes's thoughts on Chapman's CBC scheme?

3) I appreciate all the background on the phaseout of the Basin-wide New
Year's Day count in favor of the Ithaca CBC. but what's still not clear to
me is, was it Allen's initiative to make this change? and if so, what lead
him to the (late) embrace of the CBC? or was this a bottom up process,
whereby local birders began pushing to participate in an activity that they
could see going on all around them?

I'm probably decades too late in asking these questions, but I'm going to
throw them out there anyway, just to stir the pot.

that answer may depend upon how you define a Christmas Bird Count. I don't
doubt that the modern Ithaca CBC dates from 1963. but - with the important
caveat that it took decades for the CBC to assume its current form, and
that early CBCs had few guidelines (and, typically, very few participants)
- there were a few earlier Christmas counts from the Ithaca area.

before 1963, there were several single observer CBCs from Ithaca that were
published in Bird-Lore and Audubon Magazine. the earliest I have found is
one by Francis Harper from December 1904, which was only the 5th year of
the Christmas Bird Count - a very early contribution.

the next one that I know of was in December 1914, by Ludlow Griscom (!),
who I believe at that time was a graduate student at Cornell. John P. Young
submitted an Ithaca CBC for December 1922. and J. Kenneth Terres submitted
four consecutive single observer CBCs from Ithaca, from December 1938 to
December 1941.

there also was a count submitted from Trumansburg in December 1915, which
as far as I know never was repeated.

I've long been surprised by the fact that Ithaca did not develop its CBC
until relatively late in the game. a possible clue comes from this tidbit
in Greg Butcher's and Kevin McGowan's 1995 paper (History of ornithology at
Cornell University):

"[Arthur A.] Allen started a number of birding traditions in the Cayuga
Lake basin, including a New Year's Day Count (split in 1963 to become three
Christmas Bird Counts) and a May Big Day count. On New Year's Day, the
Allens hosted a turkey dinner for all participants; on the May Big Day, the
Allens provided a breakfast at their home and a picnic dinner at Montezuma
National Wildlife Refuge".

does anyone know when this New Year's Day Count was established, and
why?aside from the handful of CBCs mentioned above, by the 1950s the
Christmas Bird Count really was catching on. Ithaca was surrounded by
communities that already were doing CBCs, such as Cortland, Watkins Glen,
Elmira, Binghamton, and Syracuse. what was the allure of the New Year's Day
Count? for me, of course with the benefit of hindsight, the Ithaca birding
community of the 1950s (and earlier?) seems to have been
uncharacteristically out of step with trending approaches to birding and
ornithology when it comes to their delayed adoption of the Christmas Bird
Count. I'd very interested to know if anyone has more information on this
period of Ithaca birding history.

[cayugabirds-l] Short-eared Owl on Bluegrass Lane (northeast Ithaca)

2014-10-29 Thread Tom Schulenberg
Marshall Iliff, Ken Rosenberg, and I had a Short-eared Owl again this
evening over the field of tall switchgrass on Bluegrass Lane. This is the
first report from Bluegrass (that I know of) since Ken had a SEOW here last
Friday, but I don't know how many times it's been looked for since then.
Tonight it appeared at 18:23 and put on a very nice show; when we finally
lost sight of it, it was drifting east over the now fallow field along
Hanshaw Road.

[cayugabirds-l] thoughts on the Blue Grosbeak, and on patch birding

2013-10-15 Thread Tom Schulenberg
I was a little excited to stumble into the Blue Grosbeak on Bluegrass Lane
last Saturday, and I'm definitely thrilled that it stuck around long enough
of many other birders to see it as well. Bluegrass Lane can be a birdy
place, but at the same time it's nothing special - it's not an obvious
migrant trap like Myers Point. There are plenty of other sites all over
Tompkins County (and the rest of the Basin) that aren't much different from
the area around Bluegrass. I just was lucky to be in the right place at the
right time.

The reason that I was there at all, however, is that I bird the Hanshaw
Road fields regularly, throughout the year. I think of these fields and
woods as my patch.

And what the Blue Grosbeak tells me is that anyone can find good birds by
adopting a similar approach: find an area that is underbirded, or not
birded at all (there are many in our area!), make it * your * patch, and
cover it regularly. (And submit your patch checklists to eBird, of course.)

On most days you might not see anything special. But any day spent birding
is a day well spent. And every visit to your patch will be just a little
bit different. Over time you'll come to learn what species are expected in
your patch at different seasons, which will help make you a better birder
in general. And as the Blue Grosbeak shows, good birds can show up almost
anywhere - sooner or later you can expect to find some good birds in your
patch.

So pick your patch, get out there, and give it a try - good birds are
standing by.

[cayugabirds-l] Golden-winged Warbler in northeast Ithaca

I had a nice hit of warblers at home this morning (Hanshaw Road in

Golden-winged Warbler.

Seems as if this would be a good day to carefully check your local patch -
and then maybe to visit some other underbirded sites (of which there are
many!), just to see what else might be around right now.

Good birding,

[cayugabirds-l] definitely an Olive-sided Flycatcher, Podell Boardwalk, Sapsucker Woods

2013-08-22 Thread Tom Schulenberg
Brad Walker and I relocated the Olive-sided Flycatcher from the south end
of the Podell Boardwalk at 9:15. We watched it make a few sallies, then
lost it when it headed east (towards Sapsucker Woods Road). It's probably
still in the area - Brad and Jay McGowan are trying now to re-relocate it.

On my way into the Lab of O this morning, I came in via the Podell
Boardwalk (the boardwalk that is along the trial system if you exit the
Lab’s public entrance and head straight south parallel to Sapsucker Woods
Rd. One of the birds that I saw was what I’m almost essentially sure
(aside from not having a good size reference for comparison) was an
OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER. The bird was actively sallying out and
flycatching, always from the tops of dead trees away from the main forest
edge and never in the canopy.

[cayugabirds-l] late flock of Snow Buntings in northeast Ithaca

2013-03-23 Thread Tom Schulenberg
This morning I had a surprisingly large number (for late March) of Snow
Buntings: a flock of ca 28, feeding with ca 55 Horned Larks in fields west
of Bluegrass Lane. These birds were in the bare field west of the grass
stubble. Some of these birds still retain much buff in the plumage, but
others looked like adult females coming into breeding plumage, with black
streaked backs, much black visible on the wings, and gray or black
speckling on the nape and sides of the face.

I also had a Merlin hunting around the Equine Research Park complex, a
flyover Great Blue Heron, and a Wilson's Snipe, all between Freese Road and
Bluegrass Lane.

[cayugabirds-l] no waterfowl on waterfowl count; other birds of interest

2013-01-20 Thread Tom Schulenberg
Yesterday Ken Rosenberg and I covered the northeast of the lake for the
annual waterfowl - from Aurora Bay up to the north end of the lake. This
year there were no waterfowl to count, or, at least, there were no large
rafts of Aythya ducks anywhere in our area: we had fewer than 200 Redhead
in all, no Canvasback, and few scaup or Ring-necked Ducks. Otherwise,
waterfowl of note included two Mute Swans (adult, immature) in the
northeast corner of the lake (north of Cayuga), two White-winged Scoters
far offshore from Harris Park, and a Long-tailed Duck close to shore at
Gorwydd Lane.

Other birds of note were an immature Glaucous Gull on the shore just north
of Frontenac Harbor; three American Pipits along the shore at the Aurora
boathouse; and a group of at least six (!) Myrtle Warblers and a Field
Sparrow at the Aurora bridge (route 90 near Poplar Ridge Road).

Closer to home, we (now with Benjamin Van Doren) saw a Rough-legged Hawk
and an adult Bald Eagle along Waterwagon Road in Lansing.

Good birding,

[cayugabirds-l] Sunday birding, Stewart to Myers

2013-01-06 Thread Tom Schulenberg
Jacob Drucker and I checked areas along the southeast corner of the lake
today, from Stewart Park up to Myers, in late morning and early afternoon.
Viewing conditions were great (little to wind, no waves), but Aythya were
amazingly scarce, and we saw no scaup at all. Among the birds of interest
were

Northern Pintail - 1 female at Stewart, 1 male at Myers
Redhead - only 1! female on the ice at Stewart
Ring-necked Duck - 1 at Stewart, shortly thereafter seen entering a Great
Black-backed Gull
Pied-billed Grebe - several, Myers
Horned Grebe - distant, Stewart
Red-necked Grebe - TWO - one close at Stewart, another (seen at the same
time,) close to shore to the north of East Shore Park
Rough-legged Hawk - Burdick Hill Road
KILLDEER - 1 at the base of the spit at Myers. So the Bluegrass Lane bird
is not the only one around!
Northern Shrike - Cayuga Vista Drive, very cooperative

[cayugabirds-l] winter finches in northeast Ithaca

2012-11-07 Thread Tom Schulenberg
This morning I had a pair of flyover White-winged Crossbills on Hanshaw

Evening Grosbeak calling frequently and moving around in treetops at the
Frog Barn (91 Sapsucker Woods Road) in Sapsucker Woods; it hung around for
several minutes before flying off to the east.

[cayugabirds-l] Evening Grosbeak in northeast Ithaca

2012-10-27 Thread Tom Schulenberg
This morning I watched a male Evening Grosbeak feeding in a tree in the
wooded gully just west of Liddell Lab, along Freese Road. There were
robins, cardinals, and a flock of waxwings in the tree as well, but I
easily could have walked past the grosbeak (especially with the fog!) had
it not called several times to give itself away. Other birds of note this
morning were a pair of ravens, and a Vesper Sparrow (along the east side of
the Equine Research Park woods).

[cayugabirds-l] northeast Ithaca notes

2012-10-09 Thread Tom Schulenberg
It was birdy out there this morning, by October standards. Lots of
Ruby-crowned Kinglets and White-throated Sparrows, smaller numbers of
Blue-headed Vireos and Golden-crowned Kinglets, one Winter Wren. I also had
a small influx of warblers this morning, with a NORTHERN PARULA at the
Frog Barn (91 Sapsucker Woods Road), also 1 each of Magnolia and
Nashville, also in Sapsucker Woods.

There were Pine Siskins at several locations, including the feeders at the
Lab of Ornithology.

Would be a good day to go out and check your favorite local patch.

Good birding,

[cayugabirds-l] Marsh Wren (2), Orange-crowned Warbler in northeast Ithaca

2012-09-29 Thread Tom Schulenberg
I had a productive walk this morning through some local spots in northeast
Ithaca. Highlights were two cooperative MARSH WRENS in the cattails and
other vegetation at the marshy northeast corner of the small pond just
north of Liddell Lab (118 Freese Road). There also was an ORANGE-CROWNED
WARBLER at the edge of the woods immediately east of Liddell (the main
building), just south of the track.

Other birds about included Nashville, Yellow-rumped, and Palm warblers, the
expected Common Yellowthroats, and a late Ovenbird (east side of the Equine
Research Park woods), an immature White-crowned Sparrow, Lincoln's Sparrow
(3 along the east side of the Equine Research Park woods, 4 more in the
Freese Road community gardens), three Indigo Buntings, two Eastern Towhees,
and other expected migrants.

It's a nice day to be out. Pick a favorite patch, and give it a check.

Good birding,

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Sapsucker Woods Migrants (06 Sep)

2012-09-06 Thread Tom Schulenberg
I had a little flock this morning along Sapsucker Woods Road near the
Frog Barn (91 Sapsucker Woods Road) with Warbling, Philadelphia, and
Red-eyed vireos, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, and a few warblers (Magnolia,
Blackpoll, Black-throated Green).

There was a (the?) Prairie Warbler along the north side of the Lab of
Ornithology today a little before noon, foraging very low in small willows
and goldenrod. This is where I saw one on 22 August - I don't know what
would be more remarkable, that the same bird still is in the area, or that
two different individuals would pass in front of my office window in a
single season.

tss

On my walk in to work this morning, I found a small flock of migrants at
the Sherwood Platform including RED-EYED VIREO, NASHVILLE WARBLER,
BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER and the brightest yellow PHILADELPHIA VIREO I've
 ever seen.

Orange-crowned Warbler: 1 at the Frog Barn (91 Sapsucker Woods Road), in

[cayugabirds-l] Pectoral Sandpiper in Hanshaw Road fields

2011-10-02 Thread Tom Schulenberg
The field along Hanshaw Road, near the mouth of Sapsucker Woods Road, can be
productive for shorebirds when wet (as it is now!).

I just had four Pectoral Sandpipers in this field, in the shallow grassy
pan that has been full of Killdeer for the past couple of weeks.

Yesterday, there were 3 Greater and 1 Lesser yellowlegs in this spot. And I
had a Wilson's Snipe there yesterday evening.

Shorebirds don't always stay in this field for very long, and it can be
difficult to see all the birds from the road (because there's a bit of a
rise in the field, between the road and the shallow area with puddles where
the birds congregate). But it may be worth a check anytime one is in the
neighborhood.

Good birding,

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Sapsucker Woods- Blackpoll

2011-05-12 Thread Tom Schulenberg
Sapsucker Woods was pretty still this morning, way less action than the past
couple days. Highlights were a BLACKPOLL WARBLER and the first GREEN HERON
I've seen at the pond. Other warblers had were BLACK-THROATED BLUE,
MAGNOLIA, YELLOW-RUMPED, YELLOWTHROAT, REDSTART, YELLOW, OVEN, N WATER. Only
flys that made themselves known were LEAST, GREAT CRESTED, KINGBIRD.

Additions that I had include pewee (my first of the year) and a silent
male Hooded Warbler (on the south part of the Wilson Trail, on the short leg
that overlaps with the Severinghaus Trail).

Good birding,

[cayugabirds-l] Yellow-throated Warbler on Mohawk Road (Lansing)

2011-05-08 Thread Tom Schulenberg
Ken Rosenberg just called to report a YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER on Mohawk Road
in Lansing, just north of the airport. The site is at the north end of
Mohawk, just before the road bends east (and becomes Neimi). The woods on
the west side of north Mohawk are flooded - the Yellow-throated (and a
parula) appeared when Ken pished at a flock of Yellow-rumps in these flooded
woods.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Sapsucker Woods, Tues 4/26

2011-04-26 Thread Tom Schulenberg
I had some but by no means all of the species in Sapsucker Woods reported
by Mark.

  Additions were

Great Crested Flycatcher - one on the northeast leg of the Severinghaus
trail

Blue-headed Vireo - 1 singing where Severinghaus and Wilson trails join

Blue-gray Gnatcatcher - edge of the pond, north of the Podell boardwalk

Brown Thrasher - in brush between the Frog Barn (south of the southern
part of the East trail) and Sapsucker Woods road;
one (same bird?) was giving snatches of song yesterday morning at the
east end of the Frog Barn pond.

Gray Catbird here as well, and multiple catbirds along lower Sapsucker
Woods Road, waterthrush singing from behind my house in northeast Ithaca,
Ovenbird singing at home, etc.

Good birding,

[cayugabirds-l] Field Sparrow at Lab of Ornithology

2011-01-10 Thread Tom Schulenberg
The Field Sparrow is back at the Lab of Ornithology this morning, foraging
on the ground underneath the feeders on the north side of the building. As
do all the other sparrows (American Tree, White-throated, Song), it comes
and goes, but keep an eye out for it.

corn fields on Freese Road - the corn field by the pond at Liddell Labs. The
bird was by itself, and moving south.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Lesser Black-backed Gull on Hanshaw Road, Ithaca

2010-10-07 Thread Tom Schulenberg
What plumage/age? There seem to be a lot of this species on Long Island.
We always get a few adults and one or two juveniles this time of year.

I don't have complete confidence in my abilities to age large gulls, but
I think that was a first-cycle bird.

Saw it in the field again this morning, from inside the house, but lost
track of it (or it had flown) by the time that I left around 8.
