[cayugabirds-l] Red-headed Woodpeckers Aurora

2011-05-21 Thread wroberts
I had the good fortune of meeting up with Bob McGuire, Dave Nutter, Susan
Danskin, and others as they
were tracking the movement of a Red-headed Woodpecker at the corner of Poplar
Ridge Rd. and Rt. 90 in
Aurora earlier today (Saturday) around 12:20 p.m. The bird was very active
flying back and forth in the
nearby woods; it was first located on the west side of 90 in a yard
immediately north of Paynes Creek.

After Bob, Dave and Susan and friends left for Montezuma I continued searching
for the bird as it was the
first RhW I have observed in Aurora in over twenty years. With the help of a
friend I located the RhW in the
large Sycamore east of 90 and south of Poplar Ridge. After about 30 minutes I
discovered that there were
two RhWs moving in the tree tops and flying back and forth over Rt. 90. It
seems that this is a breeding
pair which adds to the excitement of having this magnificent species finally
return to the Aurora area.

I did manage to photograph the bird at some distance. Bill Roberts

Aurora, N.Y.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Pine siskins

2011-05-02 Thread WRoberts
We had two or three Pine Siskins, 1 female Purple Finch, dozens of
Goldfinches, pair of Carolina Wrens, RB Nuthatch, WB Nuthatch, RB
Woodpecker, Hairy, Downy, WT Sparrow, Chipping Sparrow, Blue Jay,
Cardinal, House Finches ,Am. Robin, etc. at or under our feeders this
morning. A pair of Pileatred Woodpeckers searched the adjacent wood lot.

There were E. Meadowlarks, Bobolinks and Savannah Sparrows in the
fields north of Lake R. of Rt 90 and west of the King Ferry Winery on
Sunday morning May 1st. I looked and listened for Grasshopper Sparrows
in the same area but the outcome was negative for this species. I saw
one Norther Harrier in the distance but it did not work the fields
mentioned.

Re:[cayugabirds-l] Meadowlarks

2011-04-29 Thread WRoberts
Several pairs of Eastern Meadowlarks were active in the fields on the
north side of Lake Rd. near Rt.90; approximtely 150 yards west of Long
Point Winery yesterday evening. One pair of Meadowlarks had been seen in
the same fields for approximately two weeks. Also our pair of resident
House Wrens visited our yard for the first time yesterday in Aurora.

[cayugabirds-l] Trumpeter Swans?

2011-02-04 Thread wroberts
I had the good fortune of seeing four Trumpeter Swans, I believe, flying south
along Cayuga Lake in
Aurora. My identification was reinforced by the sound of the birds calling as
they flew by; the sun was
shining and the swans were a beautiful bright white against the blue-gray sky.

I went on-line and listened to every available sound track of not only
Trumpeters but also Tundras and
ended up leaning heavily on my inclination that these were in fact Trumpeters.
I however can't say with
absolute certainty that I have made the right identification. I will keep my
fingers crossed that there will
be other sightings to corroborate my sighting.

We had the good fortune of discovering a pair of Evening Grosbeaks at our
feeders on Sunday morning;
this is the first visit of Evening Grosbeaks to our feeders in 20 years. What
a thrill. I'll wait patiently for the
next eruption. Bill Roberts
