[cayugabirds-l] Broad-winged Hawk

2023-07-12 Thread Suan Hsi Yong
On Saturday, I trudged around Sugar Hill State Forest just west of
Watkins Glen. As my hike was about to end around noon, a Broad-winged
Hawk flew to a roadside snag close to where I'd parked, and despite my
initial worry that it would flush as soon as I emerged from the trees,
it sat on that perch for a good half hour as I was able to set up a
tripod to get video footage and watched it while eating my lunch. Here
are a few scenes; see if you can identify the other sounds in the
video:

Re:[cayugabirds-l] Broad-winged Hawk migration

2018-09-15 Thread Bill Evans
Nice raptor migration observation yesterday from Adam Troyer in Candor. Thanks
for sharing Dave!

I scanned the sky from Comfort Rd in Danby from 10:35-11:15 yesterday and only
saw 19 Broad-wingeds – winds were stronger south (~10 mph) than forecasted.
Later in the afternoon I noticed a steady flight occurring and counted ~250 BWs
from 2:30-3:30 with the first half hour twice as active as the latter. Passage
was mostly in small kettles/streams with the largest 25 & 32. Also, I see on
eBird a count of ~225 BWs yesterday from Mt. Pleasant between noon & 1PM.

We are still in the peak migration window for Broad-wingeds and today &
tomorrow look promising.

I talked to Reuben again today. He said that yesterday’s Broad-winged Hawk
migration path shifted eastward during the day. Reuben also heard from another
Amish farmer/birder, Adam Troyer in Candor NY, who counted these raptors
migrating past his place yesterday:
774 Broad-winged Hawks
12 Ospreys
2 American Kestrels
5 Bald Eagles
1 Northern Harrier

Reuben may have missed birds in the beginning of yesterday’s migration since
they seemed to be in full swing when he first noticed them at 11am. Also his
numbers were not precise. Still he was intrigued by how similar the number was
that he saw and that Adam saw yesterday. Reuben also saw a few additional
species of raptors, but I didn’t take notes on that. He did not see any
migration today.

Yesterday (28 April) Reuben Stoltzfus was traveling north on NYS-414 between

I heard and saw a Broad-winged Hawk this morning in apparent possession of the
traditional Maple Ave territory. Quite a few other Broad-wings were passing
over West Danby, right through the midday. Then at about 2:30 there was some
kind of aggressive interaction at treetop level involving three individuals.

[cayugabirds-l] Broad-winged Hawk

2016-04-27 Thread Geo Kloppel
On Monday afternoon I came across a Broad-winged Hawk on Station Road (West
Danby), just below the State Forest / Land Trust boundary. It was perched in a
tree above the small stream there, in a typical hunting situation, so I would
guess it's a local, newly returned from Veracruz or wherever...

Yes, Derby Hill has seen very few Broad-wings yet, unless they got a pulse
today. But my guy is definitely back, even swooping into the woods overlooking
Maple Ave, where the nests from previous years are located. He's in the
vanguard every year!

What a racket the Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers are making this afternoon!

[cayugabirds-l] Broad-winged Hawk etc.

2014-04-22 Thread Chris R. Pelkie
While we were finishing dinner in our glass-roofed conservatory, I saw a
crow-sized bird soar in and begin circling overhead. Hoping for a raven, I
grabbed the binocs at hand and was as happy to see it was a BROAD-WINGED HAWK
(not a new yard bird but first of year for me and for yard). It circled several
times giving great looks at the tail before sailing off to the east up West
Meadow Dr Lansing.

Shortly after 2 WOOD DUCKs flew over (they were in the creek a couple weeks
back).

I went out to see what other goodies would appear when what to my wondering
eyes but about 50 RING-BILLED GULLs flying in an almost perfect goose-like V
(somewhat flatter than the typical goose pattern) on their way back to the lake
for the night. This is the biggest organized gull group I’ve ever seen. I have
had small well-formed V’s of a dozen or so gulls pass over in the past (not
this year) but at first glance up I thought ‘wow what are those snow geese
doing here now?’.

A brief hawkwatch (1:30 PM-2:20PM) from the Ecology House on Cornell's North
Campus by Eric Gulson, Ben Barkley, and myself  produced an adult Broad-winged
Hawk along with some American Kestrels and Sharp-shinned Hawks along with the
usual Red-tailed Hawks and vultures. Apart from hawks, we had 11 Common Loons
going over to the north and northwest.

Cheers,

[cayugabirds-l] Broad-winged Hawk eats American Toads

2010-05-04 Thread David McCartt
Hi All,

On Sunday, about 6pm we had our 15th new bird species of the weekend, a
BROAD-WINGED HAWK.  Like Geo, our pond was/is hosting many mating American
Toads.  The hawk took advantage of the easy pickings.  I digi-scoped some
rather poor photos in low light from about 300 feet.  If you're interested you
can see some of them here.

2010-04-30 Thread Stuart Krasnoff
I was in the lot behind the Rite Aid across from East Hill Plaza checking out a
singing/foraging Yellow Warbler when I .I saw a Broad-winged Hawk flying north
high over the cemetery (ca. 0900 h).
