[cayugabirds-l] Caspian Tern feeds young

2014-08-10 Thread Donna Scott
Enjoying this gorgeous day at my Cayuga L. beach, I twice saw a CASPIAN TERN,
which was followed by its squeaking youngster, catch a fish near my shore.
Then both flew out to deeper water there the juvenile landed in the water
parent flew to it gave it the small fish. Parent then wheeled away to search
for more. The young one ate the fish then flew after its parent.
Two days ago I saw an amalgamated brood of 30 or more mostly-grown young
COMMON MERGANSERS with an adult swim by in a tight raft.

Baby bird season sure is fun!

[cayugabirds-l] Caspian Tern with leg bands?

2014-08-07 Thread Pat Martin
Does anyone out there know to whom one should send Caspian Tern leg band
numbers? I found a banded adult at Summerville Pier in Rochester this
afternoon. This individual bred successfully this year, if the juvenile
bleating at its side the entire time I was taking photos and angling to see the
band numbers is to be believed.
