2024-04-13 Thread Donna Lee Scott
I now have 5 Chipping Sparrows & at least 2 went into an open roofed tray
feeder filled with Agway Ithaca Mix seeds.

Lots of DE Juncos, too.

Could be the one we had on Mt Kendal last year. If Merlin was correct.

[cayugabirds-l] Chipping sparrow adn junco songs

2015-04-22 Thread Meena Madhav Haribal
?Hi all.

Recently I had chance to look at the spectrograms of the songs of Chipping
sparrow and Dark-eyed junco as they are considered to be difficult to
distinguish.

Chipping Sparrow does beautiful variation in its song. The energy level peaks
either at higher frequency in every subsequent trill note or decreases. And
sometimes it forms a nice pattern of energy peaking in each trill note. Also
it is of much longer duration. While junco's trill were shorter almost
replicable length for each phrase and the energy level peaked in subsequent
trills rather randomly. I need to look more closely if there is any difference.
I will have to record more Chipping sparrows to see if it holds true for all
chipping sparrows or it was this particular individual who did so much
variation.

I also had recorded a Song Sparrow on the same day. Out of nine songs I
recorded, eight of them were different in some respect or the other in the
notes used and the placing of the notes. And there was another Song Sparrow
singing some distance away it also seemed to do lot of variation in its song
but not as much as the closer one.

It is such fun to learn the differences of individuals and I am very excited.
I must look at my older Song Sparrow recordings and pay attention to their
variation.

If anyone else is curious to see the spectrogram send me an email to me at
m...@cornell.edumailto:m...@cornell.edu I will mail the spectrogram.

Cheers

Meena

[cayugabirds-l] Chipping Sparrow and others

2014-04-14 Thread Bill Mcaneny
Our first Chipping Sparrow showed up at the feeders this afternoon. It was
scratching around under the sunflower seed feeder. Not long after, a
Sharpshinned Hawk cruised thru the yard but made no attacks that I could
see. This a.m. a Flicker flew away as I drove past the barns. In other
news, things in bloom include Lenten Rose, Scylla, and one daffodil that may
pop at any moment. Snowdrops and croci are on the way out, having served
their purpose of announcing the arrival of fine weather. A few minutes ago,
the fine weather blew hard thru here with a big dump of rain. So it goes.

So looks like Chipping sparrows have reached our latitude on same day! In
last several years, I have found that first arrival of same species are
reported on same day to Cayugabirds, Geneseebirds and Oniedabirds often.

It is really interesting to see that they move approximately same distances
north. What causes them to stop and not go further anymore?

[cayugabirds-l] Chipping Sparrow

2010-11-14 Thread Meena Haribal
Yesterday afternoon, near David Haskell Ithaca College Boat Club, Bill Evans,
Stuart Krasnoff and I observed a cute looking CHIPPING SPARROW while we were
looking for leps and other arthropods. This note is for those late record
keepers (I don't mean record keepers are late, but record of late seasonal
observation keepers). Confused? Ok, I guess you know what I mean.
Talking about leps, we did see some five species of leps and several other
insects. But we had some fun with one of the species of moths. I was getting
ready to photograph a Celery Looper Moth (Anagrapha falcifera) when Stuart
rubbed his water bottle. The insect reacted by taking off and returning a
little later to same location. This amused us. So we tried again. Sure enough
the sound made it get scared. So we took a short video of this insect. But
after 15 replicates or so the insect got habituated and showed no response.
We were wondering as to what this insect was perceiving. Same frequencies we
hear or was it something that we did not hear? For those who enjoy insects too,
here is a link to short video for this behavior.
