[cayugabirds-l] White Pelican

2019-05-05 Thread Donna Lee Scott
My neighbor who lives a few houses south reported that at about 9:30 am today
she saw a WHITE PELICAN flying north over Cayuga Lake.
She noticed the black trailing edges on the wings and the long yellow bill on
the large white bird.
Said she couldn't believe her eyes, but it was a pelican!
Too bad I was not looking at the lake at that time.

[cayugabirds-l] White Pelican

2016-01-17 Thread Diana
Hi All,
I went today to look for the White Pelican. I got there at about 7:15 and left
a cold five hours later. Unfortunately, this bird is not eating at all, and I
wonder if perhaps the water is too deep there for it to be successful. I
noticed that it would follow the cormorants around. I think it was hoping to
steal a meal as it never seemed to be making any attempt at 'fishing'. I stayed
really to try and figure out if it was eating, but had to leave at 12:15. I
feel kind of sad looking at the weather forecast. I wonder if this bird has the
strength to fly more than the short flights I saw. Photos after my camera warms
up and can out of the bag.

[cayugabirds-l] White Pelican

2016-01-17 Thread joe & Diana
 Hi All,

I would like to add for those of us who might not know, that after a little
research, I found that the White Pelican co-operatively feeds with the
cormorant because when the cormorant dives, it stirs up the fish to the top of
the water where the pelican can then scoop up the fish. Even so, the strategy
did not seem to be working. That would explain why the pelican is following
them. Here are a few shots, nothing spectacular because the light really
dwindled, but for the record.

[cayugabirds-l] White pelican

2013-07-31 Thread Carol Keeler
The White Pelican is best seen from Towpath Rd. I drove all the way to the
dike , but didn't need to go that far. There are two islands of vegetation.
It is sitting toward the dike end of the second island in full view. Van Dyne
Spoor was a disappointment since it was full of canoeists which chased most
birds away. The two Red Headed Woodpeckers were very busy bringing food back
to the nest cavity today.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] White pelican Towpath Rd

Thanks for tip, Carol! Good views from Towpath Rd.
White Pelican is feeding now, by sticking bill sideways in water catching
something, which it swallows now then.

[cayugabirds-l] White Pelican and Little Blue Heron

2013-07-23 Thread Ann Mitchell
The WHITE PELICAN was seen at Knox Marcellus along with a male EURASIAN WIGEON.
There was a WILSON'S PHALAROPE, also, seen by Wade and Melissa Rowley. The
LITTLE BLUE HERON flew in to roost with 45 GREAT EGRETS at 8:21 on Van Dyne
Spoor Road.
Good Birding,
