*Senior Crystallization Scientist*

We are seeking a highly talented and motivated crystallization scientist
who is enthusiastic about working on a wide variety of biological systems.
The successful candidate will have a strong background in structural
biology and will be skilled at protein crystallization, crystal
optimization and protein engineering for crystallography. Experience in
X-ray data collection and knowledge of x-ray structure analysis is a plus.

The successful candidate will work as part of a team providing x-ray
crystallography outputs to support chemistry design throughout RD.
Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to work in
multidisciplinary project teams are highly desirable qualities for this
position.

*Responsibilities*



• Carry out crystallization trials, crystal optimization and initial
characterization by x-ray diffraction for proteins and protein-ligand
complexes

• Perform biophysical characterization of proteins intended for
crystallization

• Provide guidance for the design of optimal constructs for protein
crystallography

• Effectively communicate results through presentations, e-mails and
reports.

• Develop and further own skills in theoretical and practical
crystallography and structural biology through appropriate reading and
attendance at courses and external meetings. Actively seek to broaden
understanding of other disciplines.



*Experience required*


• PhD or MSc degree in structural biology or a related field

• 3-5 years experience in practical macromolecular crystallography, ideally
across a wide range of protein families

• Working experience in design, production and purification of proteins and
protein-ligand complexes specifically for protein crystallography

• Knowledge of protein crystallization and optimization techniques

• Knowledge of x-ray diffraction and basic data collection strategies

• Knowledge of software for molecular biology and protein structure analysis

enthusiastic about working across the range of protein crystallography
activities covering a wide variety of biological systems. The successful
candidate will have a strong background in protein production and
crystallization as well as x-ray data collection, structure refinement and
validation. Computational and molecular modelling skills are a plus.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate flexible teamworking and
a tenacious approach to delivering structural solution outputs to projects.
Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to
translate structural knowledge to a meaningful output for multidisciplinary
project teams are highly desirable qualities for this position.

*Responsibilities*

• Lead the protein crystallography team and provide protein crystallography
support for research projects
• Maintain a strategic overview of projects requiring structural biology
support; engage and communicate effectively with stakeholders to ensure
optimal use of resources
• Guide molecular biology and protein purification for crystallography
• Carry out crystallization, x-ray data collection, structure determination
and refinement of proteins and protein-ligand complexes
• Communicate results to chemists, computational chemists and
cross-disciplinary project teams so that results make an impact in
structure-based design and understanding of SAR of new leads
• Develop and maintain high quality standards for in-house structure data
and crystallographic computing procedures
• Responsible for organization of own and team's laboratory work including
ordering laboratory supplies and equipment
• Formal and informal teaching and coaching of other lab staff and trainees

*Experience required*


• PhD in macromolecular crystallography/structural biology plus 5 years
industry experience or equivalent
• Demonstrated experience in protein crystallization, structure
determination, refinement and validation

• Knowledge of chemistry, molecular structure and protein-ligand
interactions
• Knowledge of software for protein structure solution and refinement
• Knowledge of protein production

As an independent worker, you will be a part of our Protein Production
Team, providing protein expression/purification support in a timely
manner across a range of Crop Protection Research projects. This will
involve carrying out small to medium-scale protein purification and
delivering purified proteins for assays and crystallography and
communicating results to the project team to influence/guide project
decisions. You will also have the opportunity to conduct expression
screening in E.coli (essential), insects and yeast (desirable), as
well as purifying and characterising difficult to express proteins in
heterologous systems with genes from a variety of sources.

With a BSc/PhD in protein biochemistry and or relevant lab experience
you will have the skills in isolating proteins from complex mixtures,
both native and recombinant sources. Experience in working with
membrane protein and kinases would be highly advantageous.
Bioinformatics skills to analyse DNA and protein data and the ability
to deal with academic and industrial collaborators, including CROs,
are also desirable. You should also have the ability to learn quickly
and apply new skills with excellent organisational skills.
