Re: [CentOS] Timeout for a script

2008-11-12 Thread Filipe Brandenburger
Hi,

On Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 08:39, Jussi Hirvi [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
 Thanks - but I couldn't make that work as expected. It seems to kill
 *something*, but after that, the rsync part still continues in the
 background...

If what you want to kill is the rsync process, do the opposite, run
rsync in background, sleep for some time, test if it is still running
and then kill it.

 Here's my last test:

 log='/root/log/rsync2'
 timeoutseconds=1
 pid=$$
 (sleep $timeoutseconds;
echo `date '+%c'`  $0 INTERRUPTED $log;
kill -9 $pid)
 /usr/bin/rsync -avzu --delete /root /home/palvelimet/bckserver1
 echo `date '+%c'`  $0 valmis $log

Use something like:

#! /bin/bash
timeout=60
/usr/bin/rsync -avzu --delete /root /home/palvelimet/bckserver1
rsync_pid=$?
sleep $timeout
# test if process $rsync_pid is still a child of this process:
ppid_rsync=`ps -o ppid= $rsync_pid`
# remove any spaces
ppid_rsync=`echo $ppid_rsync`
# compare the parent of $rsync_pid with this process, if it matches,
kill $rsync_pid
test x$ppid_rsync = x$$  kill $rsync_pid

It's certainly more convoluted than it should be... but it should work.

The C solution is probably the right thing to do, if you have time to
dig into it and find out how it works.

HTH,
Filipe

Try replacing the 'kill -9 $pid' with '/usr/bin/kill -s KILL -$pid'

I've used something based on:

which seems to work fine

A problem is that the /etc/yum.repos.d/mirrors-rpmforge file has
$ARCH in it, which would still be x86_64 even if installed from
i386.

Couldn't you try to make a copy of /etc/yum.repos.d/rpmforge.repo
into, say, rpmforge32.repo, and change it into:

[rpmforge32]
name = Red Hat Enterprise $releasever - RPMforge.net - dag
baseurl = http://apt.sw.be/redhat/el5/en/i386/dag
enabled = 1
protect = 0
gpgkey = file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-rpmforge-dag
gpgcheck = 1

and see if it works? Maybe you can pick another mirror,
but remember to replace $ARCH with i386.

Note: This is not tested, but I've done this with Livna
on a Fedora x86_64 machine without breaking anything.

*sigh*

Well, it seems that bash doesn't have some of the stuff ISTR from the
original *IX stuff (builtin alarm? not sure anymore). Anyway, a google
for bash alarm trap led to this and there are lots more. This was just
the first and may not be the best for your needs.

there is a description of linux rescue which includes the following:

 From the prompt, you can run many useful commands, such as:

   ssh, scp, and ping if the network is started

   dump and restore for users with tape drives

   parted and fdisk for managing partitions

   rpm for installing or upgrading software

   joe for editing configuration files

Question: Is there a complete list somewhere, of which System
Utilities and Commands are available, if one boots into linux
rescue?

If rescue mode manages to mount your installed system on /mnt/sysimage
it automatically adds elements to the path including
/mnt/sysimage/bin:/mnt/sysimage/usr/bin:/mnt/sysimage/usr/sbin:/mnt/sysimage/sbin:/mnt/sysimage/usr/X11R6/bin,
so it depends on what you have installed.

Typing TabTab at the command prompt after skipping the mounting or
removing the /mnt/sysimage elements of the PATH variable (e.g.
PATH=/bin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/usr/sbin) shows 438 available commands for the
5.2 DVD booted in rescue mode. Won't try to include them all here.

[CentOS] SVN missing libexpat.so.0 while it is present

2008-11-12 Thread Berend Dekens

Hello,

Hopefully I am sending this to the correct mailing list but it seemed
best suited for troubleshooting :-)

machines: every attempt to run 'svn ls' or 'svn co' ends in:
svnserve: error while loading shared libraries: libexpat.so.0: cannot

Which is strange as the symlink is present in /lib/libexpat.so.0 (which
points to /lib/libexpat.so.0.5.0) and /usr/lib/libexpat.so.0 - I even

I suggest you contact Red Hat support for this issue if it's
such a critical server and sounds like a pretty fragile situation.
That's what they are there for. And your running a really old version
of RH.

If it were me I would upgrade the system to be fiber channel instead
of SCSI, and update to all the latest patches for your version of
RH. The bug mentions how using SCSI attached storage as your shared
storage medium is not at all proven reliable. At least some MSAs
out there you can get a fiber channel head unit and a few HBAs, and
perhaps a switch and hook things up without too much downtime and
have a better system as a result.

Couldn't you try to make a copy of /etc/yum.repos.d/rpmforge.repo
into, say, rpmforge32.repo, and change it into:

[rpmforge32]
name = Red Hat Enterprise $releasever - RPMforge.net - dag
baseurl = http://apt.sw.be/redhat/el5/en/i386/dag
enabled = 1
protect = 0
gpgkey = file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-rpmforge-dag
gpgcheck = 1

and see if it works? Maybe you can pick another mirror,
but remember to replace $ARCH with i386.

Note: This is not tested, but I've done this with Livna
on a Fedora x86_64 machine without breaking anything.

[CentOS] Rsyncing UPdate repo yoyoing

It has been crazy this past week how a rsync on the update repo keeps

[CentOS] Timeout for a script

2008-11-12 Thread Jussi Hirvi
How could I make a script time out after nn minutes, if it's not finished by
then?

The practical context: I have a dozen or so of backup scripts in a directory
daily, and they are run by cron like this:
 0 23 * * 1-6 run-parts /root/daily

Sometimes one of the scripts hang, in which case the rest of the scripts are
delayed more than can be allowed.

Look into the number of busy httpd servers, that might be your problem

use a configured URL in Apache (I believe it is /server-status) or you
can at least estimate using ps and comparing with the settings for
maximum number of servers in your httpd.conf.

I've had a similar problem, and it was a software that had a custom
version of gdbm library and set LD_LIBRARY_PATH in profile to make
sure that version would be used.

Do you have LD_LIBRARY_PATH set? What does this command say:

I don't recall from earlier in this thread, but did you happen to
mention what hardware you're running?

I have seen behavior like this before on my 64-bit machine at home
when there is a conflict between the 32 and 64 bit libraries. It's
the main reason I can't build gnome at home (I think), for which I am
actually grateful (who knows how much damage I could have done to
myself), and I have also had issues with Seamonkey in this respect
(though not this particular one).

 Also tried that - nothing changed :-(

You are sure, that you really use the correct svn binary? Maybe an old
installation is still active and your $PATH does not start the svn
binary in /usr/bin? Try to call the binaries with full path, since ldd
seems to report correct libraries.

I looked at http://www.sendmail.org/tips/relaying but it just talks

Many systems don't allow telnet connections because of security
issues, using ssh (secure shell instead).

If the issue is dealing with programs on the remote system that
are designed for interactive use, this is difficult to do
reliably although not impossible using ``expect'' via some kind of
remote connection, ssh, telnet, etc. (I was running Tandy's Xenix
accounting applications on a Tandy Model 16 24 years ago using
nothing but input and output redirection from the shell, but that
was not pretty :-).

The ``expect'' program is built around ``tcl'' scripting, but
there are perl and python modules that work reasonably well too.

Re: [CentOS] Timeout for a script

2008-11-12 Thread Jussi Hirvi
Ian Blackwell ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) kirjoitteli (12.11.2008 12:13):

 I put this little test script together. It seems to work OK...
 #!/bin/bash
 timeoutseconds=5
 pid=$$
 (echo Will kill $pid in $timeoutseconds seconds; sleep $timeoutseconds;
 kill -1 $pid)
 while true
 do
 echo Hello
 sleep 0.6
 done

 You may need to vary the signal in the kill statement, depending on what
 you're running.

Hei,

Thanks - but I couldn't make that work as expected. It seems to kill
*something*, but after that, the rsync part still continues in the
background... Here's my last test:

log='/root/log/rsync2'
timeoutseconds=1
pid=$$
(sleep $timeoutseconds;
echo `date '+%c'`  $0 INTERRUPTED $log;
kill -9 $pid)
/usr/bin/rsync -avzu --delete /root /home/palvelimet/bckserver1
echo `date '+%c'`  $0 valmis $log

Then I found this, which leads me to believe it's not that simple:

http://www.cit.gu.edu.au/~anthony/info/shell/script.hints

(scroll to Command timeout)

On that page, they recommend a simple c solution timeout.c, which you can
download here:

ftp.kaist.ac.kr/NetBSD/NetBSD-current/src/lib/libcurses/timeout.c

Anybody bother to comment? How is that thing used? Sorry, I don't speak c.

Jussi

enabling specific relays to occur - not how to CLOSE the
relaying.

How do I close the relay?

When I run the following I get broken web page:

http://verify.abuse.net/cgi-bin/relaytest

I am getting investigating all this as I am getting return emails
from sbcglobal that I am spam.

Sure enough I tried your test and that looks good...

HOwever, when i run this test:
HELO example.com
MAIL From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
RCPT To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
DATA
Subject: Think we're insecure...
I have a feeling our mail server is being abused...
.
QUIT

and paste that into port 25 of my server (telnet I'm talking)
I get the email and I should not ( I presume) as I am not example.com.

That's not relaying. A true test is if you telnet from a public ip to
your SMTP port and try to send an email to a domain that isn't yours,
like a gmail account, does it go through. It shouldn't, but it should
if sent from an internal ip.

Basically you need a file of hosts/networks allowed to relay to any
domain (your internal hosts), and a file of domains that are allowed
to be relayed by anyone (domains you handle).

Can't remember their names, look in /etc/mail/Makefile for hints.

No.

 Run rpm --rebuilddb

How is that supposed to help in this case?

My local repo is ok now, and I have successfully updated a couple machines.

I think i downloaded the whole openoffice.org updates half a dozen
times. Down they would come (200Mb worth), then they would get
deleted, then downloaded again. Seems stable now

Or maybe the next script that cron executes can kill the previous one
as a first step before doing anything else.

 Here's my last test:

 log='/root/log/rsync2'
 timeoutseconds=1
 pid=$$
 (sleep $timeoutseconds;
echo `date '+%c'`  $0 INTERRUPTED $log;
kill -9 $pid)
 /usr/bin/rsync -avzu --delete /root /home/palvelimet/bckserver1
 echo `date '+%c'`  $0 valmis $log

 Use something like:

 #! /bin/bash
 timeout=60
 /usr/bin/rsync -avzu --delete /root /home/palvelimet/bckserver1
 rsync_pid=$?
 sleep $timeout
 # test if process $rsync_pid is still a child of this process:
 ppid_rsync=`ps -o ppid= $rsync_pid`
 # remove any spaces
 ppid_rsync=`echo $ppid_rsync`

 Filipe
