[CentOS] Help with Intel 6235 Wireless on CentOS 7 (pointer to good reading?)
Dear Experts, I would like to ask your advise on good reading about how to add WiFi device, and how to control its settings on CentOS. Sounds really dumb, but this is what I am NOT able to do on CentOS 7 what I was able to do in the past, beginning somewhere since RedHat 5 or 6, through Fedora and up to CentOS 6. In brief: my card is Intel 6235; CentOS 7 (fully updatted), latest kernel (3.10.0-229.20.1), relevant Intel firmware version for my card is in /lib/firmware (together with large bunch of other Intel WiFi firmware), relevant modules are loaded in kernel: iwlwifi iwldvm mac80211 cfg80211 "/sbin/ifconfig -a" shows my device in the list renamed to wlp3s0 (according to PCI slot numbering I figure), dmesg shows device brought up successfully detected and renamed as above. lspci shows device with its correct full name (Network controller: Intel Corporation ... 6235" Now comes the fun part (no, troublesome for me part). When I click on the NetworkManager Applet in right top corner, there are no WiFi devices. I go to Network Settings from there. My device is in the list under name "PCI Unknown". I click on that, the device is described as "unmanaged", and there is no way to make changes to the contrary to other devices (correct MAC address is displayed). OK, I assume I just need to declare device as NM_CONTROLLED. There is no relevant /etc/sysconfig/ifcfg-wlp3s0 - where I know I can declare that. I use "nmtui" to add configuration, then add to ifcfg-wlp3s0 NM_CONTROLLED="yes" line. Reboot. Still the same. Just for comparison I booted Ubuntu 14.0.4 x86_64 live CD. Yes, it can see my wireless, and I can connect to WiFi networks. Kernel is just a notch newer (3.13.0.24) which shouldn't matter according to Intel information which kernel versions this device is supported in. List of relevant kernel modules loaded by ubuntu is exactly the same. I don't see anything weird like the need to separately load firmware as kernel module (yes, indeed I'm going nuts, that would be "freebsd-ism" I guess). I do not want to have Ubuntu (or Debian which likely will work out of the box too) on this laptop. So, apparently I need a pointer to good reading on how do we do it on CentOS 7 "dirty way" - when "click here, choose in menu that" doesn't work. Thanks a lot for your advises! On 11/25/2015 09:09 AM, Fred Smith wrote: should I put swap on both drives? should it be RAID1 also, or just two swap partitions not in any RAID volume? I really recommend using the fewest partitions possible, since md RAID operates on partitions (Anaconda won't create full disk md RAID volumes), and replacing a disk will require you to handle each partition individually. It's probably best to do a small /boot on RAID1 and use the rest of the disk for a second RAID1 volume, with LVM on that. (If you haven't looked at the links I posted earlier, do consider that) (I remember seeing a somewhat technical article in the last couple of years that talked of a potential corruption issue if one puts swap into a Linux software RAID-1 volume, but no longer recall the details.) There's no corruption. If a write is canceled before it completes, you might end up with a block mis-match (or might have, I'm not sure if that still happens), but no corruption. The mis-match is on a block that isn't mapped to anything, and will never be read by anything other than a RAID verify. It's ugly because it means the verify operation is no longer useful, but it won't cause any read from the RAID volume to return bad data. ___ CentOS mailing list CentOS@centos.org https://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos
Re: [CentOS] Poor perfmance of bridged interfaces
On 11/25/2015 07:18 AM, Sergio Belkin wrote: Are you talking bearing in mind VirtualBox? Actually, no. I'd either missed that detail or forgotten it by that time in the conversation. This might be the wrong list for VirtualBox questions, since it's not distributed with CentOS. I've worked with VirtualBox only a little bit, and I'm not sure what you're trying to do is possible. I think it is, but I can only really describe how to accomplish what you're trying to do with respect to libvirt/KVM (the virtualization platform that's distributed with CentOS). Anyway, the first thing you'd want to do is create a bridge interface with no slaves, and then create two VMs. They should be attached to that bridge device. (In virtualbox you might be able to do that with "bridged networking" to br0, or you might be able to skip the virt host bridge and use "internal networking". Try the former first.) The two VMs will not be attached to the real network, but should be able to reach each other. Now your topology looks like this: ---| Network |---| (eth0)-VM Host-(br0) |--+| (eth0)-VM1 | \| (eth0)-VM2 | ...your virtualization host is connected to the real network on eth0. The two VMs are attached to its br0 interface. They each have one "ethernet" interface and can communicate with each other. Once you've set that up and verified that it works, set up a new bridge interface, br1. Move the IP configuration from eth0 to br1, and make eth0 a slave of br1. Make sure the virtualization host has network connectivity. Your network topology looks exactly like it did before, except that the virt host uses br1 (with eth0 as a slave) to connect to the real network. ---| Network |---| (br1)-VM Host-(br0) |--+| (eth0)-VM1 | \| (eth0)-VM2 | Next, you can add a second interface to VM1. This one will be connected to br1. (again, in virtualbox, you might be able to do this with bridged networking.) Give VM1's new interface (it's eth1) an IP configuration appropriate for your real network, and verify that it has full internet connectivity. Now your network looks like this: /--| (eth1)\ ---| Network |---| (br1)-VM Host-(br0) |--+| (eth0)-VM1 | \| (eth0)-VM2 | So, now VM2 can reach VM1, but not the real network, and VM1 can reach the real network. Finally, you'll create a bridge interface in VM1, and make both of its "ethernet" interfaces slaves. Move its IP configuration from eth1 to its new br0, and drop the IP configuration from eth0. This will give VM2 connectivity to the real network, so update its IP configuration to be compatible with the real network. Now your network looks like this: /--| (eth1)\ ---| Network |---| (br1)-VM Host-(br0) |--+| (eth0)-(br0)-VM1 | \| (eth0)-VM2 | When VM2 transmits a packet, it will be sent out VM2-eth0, across VM Host br0 to VM1-eth0, across VM1-br0 to VM Host-br1, to the real network. And most importantly, no bridge connects two interfaces to the same broadcast domain. VM Host's br0 creates a collision domain spanning the two VMs. VM Host's br1 creates a collision domain spanning the physical network and VM1's eth1 interface. And VM1's br0 bridges those two collision domains. No loops. I don't know what performance will look like under VirtualBox, since I don't use it for this sort of thing. However, under KVM/libvirt, performance should be fairly good. ___ CentOS mailing list CentOS@centos.org https://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos
