I was thinking I might as well go back to Windows, but that's pretty much the
same thing.

Right now I'm rather dismayed by RHEL/CentOS 8. I was hoping to skip CentOS 7
and go straight from 6 to 8. But right now there's just too much missing in
version 8. I can't tolerate the Gnome 3 desktop, and the lack of VM snapshot
capability is a total deal-breaker for me. It's looking like CentOS 6 will go
EOL before version 8 is usable for me. I might end up switching to Mint.

I'm not suggesting that it will. A few years ago, soon after the source
code of CDE was released, I downloaded, compiled, and installed CDE in a
CentOS 6 VM. Why? Because I could. But would I conduct any serious
business in that environment? Of course not. And why is that? Because it

Thanks ever so much for the update, even though as you say nothing much has
changed.

Perhaps now that more people have their hands on Centos 8 and can work with it
the folks who know what they're doing for getting desktops running on EL8 (and
I'm definitely not one of them) will be able to make further progress.

I sincerely appreciate the update, though. Since Mate is widely used, I
suspect other folks who follow this mailing list would also be interested

available.

Nothing has changed since the September 16 answer I gave:

This is more of a question for the EPEL lists versus here. The current
status is that desktops are harder to package up in EL8 and only a
less feature version is available at the moment. At the moment the
only one I know of is KDE is half implemented in EPEL Playground and
will be reimplemented as a module when EPEL gains the ability to do
modules. At that point interested people can also do the work to make
Mate/Cinnamon/etc available.

That may be, but in view of the fact that you can even get a version of CDE
that works (very well) on Centos 7 (https://github.com/dcantrell/cderpm if

It's not a RHEL (or CentOS) kernel so you lose the stability (kABI),

Additionally, as you correctly identify it may break things or not work

It's a use at your own risk offering to allow you to try out features /

there is only boot.iso (netinstall) and dvd1 (as mentioned on

So dvd1 has everything ... only PowerTools can be considered another

[updates] repo disappeared completely, as all updates are landing in
either BaseOS and/or AppStream as they are built/tested and then pushed

[CentOS-announce] Release for CentOS Linux 8 and CentOS Streams

2019-09-24 Thread Karanbir Singh
We would like to announce the general availability of CentOS Linux 8 and
the new CentOS Stream, on all architectures.

--
CentOS Linux 8

This is the first release for CentOS Linux 8 and is version marked as
8.0-1905, derived from sources published by Red Hat, delivered via
git.centos.org

First, please read through the release notes at :
http://wiki.centos.org/Manuals/ReleaseNotes/CentOSLinux8 - these notes
contain important information about the release and details about some
of the content inside the release from the CentOS QA team. These notes
are updated constantly to include issues and incorporate feedback from
the users and should be the first port of call for anyone looking to use
CentOS Linux 8.

--
CentOS Stream

When the CentOS Project announced it was joining forces with Red Hat in
January 2014, we put an emphasis on how the new relationship would
“(drive) forward development and adoption of next-generation open source
technologies”:
https://www.redhat.com/en/about/press-releases/red-hat-and-centos-join-forces
In the intervening years, the Project has grown to deliver not just a
Linux distribution, but an entire set of sub-communities using new
services in support of development work done on top of that distro.
Special interest groups (SIGs) have provided a base for layered projects
to develop on a stable platform. Additionally, CI/CD, the community
build system, better Git repository hosting, and container pipelines,
amongst others, have brought modern code and development practices to
the broader CentOS community.

With the introduction of CentOS Stream
https://wiki.centos.org/Manuals/ReleaseNotes/CentOSStream
we are excited to continue working with Red Hat
http://redhat.com/en/blog/transforming-development-experience-within-centos
to bring you the biggest step forward the CentOS Project has ever
undertaken.

CentOS Stream is a rolling-release Linux distro that exists as a
midstream between the upstream development in Fedora Linux and the
downstream development for Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). It is a
cleared-path to contributing into future minor releases of RHEL while
interacting with Red Hat and other open source developers. This pairs
nicely with the existing contribution path in Fedora for future major
releases of RHEL.

In practice, CentOS Stream will contain the code being developed for the
next minor RHEL release. This development model will allow the community
to discuss, suggest, and contribute features and fixes into RHEL more
quickly.

To do this, Red Hat Engineering is planning to move parts of RHEL
development into the CentOS Project in order to collaborate with
everyone on updates to RHEL.

There will not be a CentOS Stream for versions released in the past,
this is only a forward-looking version target.

Please read through the release notes at :
http://wiki.centos.org/Manuals/ReleaseNotes/CentOSStream - these notes
contain important information about the release and details about some
of the content inside the release from the CentOS QA team. These notes
are updated constantly to include issues and incorporate feedback from
the users.

--
Updates, Sources and DebugInfos

Updates for both distributions are being built and will be online in the
next few days to catchup. Sources and debuginfo for all the released
content is also available online at mirror.centos.org and vault.centos.org;

In the coming days, we will work to get the cbs.centos.org service
enabled for both the new distributions, and encourage the SIG's to start
considering their executions plans forward.

Apologies for the double message.

And, to answer my own question, it looks like just the announcements went
out after the 14th and all the updates are accounted for.

Apologies, again.

But(!), I don't see any updates to CO 7.7.1908 in the "updates" directory

Is something broken?

I believe updates will show up in the /os directory over time. The

[CentOS] Interesting update problem

2019-09-24 Thread isdtor
I had problems updating a 7.6 machine to 7.7, so I reinstalled it from scratch
and applied all the 7.6 updates, then attempted the 7.7 upgrade again. It
failed with the same errors. I'm wondering where the problem is?

# yum update
...

Of course mesa-libEGL-devel-18.3.4-5.el7.x86_64 is not installed, that's the
new version. The installed version is mesa-libEGL-devel-18.0.5-4.el7_6.x86_64.

Where did it all go wrong? I tried clearing the yum cache and rebuilding the
rpm db, no joy.

Another 7.6 machine upgraded fine, although from a smaller installed package
set.

from 2459e4e Correct download links for ISO images for 7.7.1810 release
new 0ce3254 Updating who/what/where/why for the world of two CentOS
distros. - Quick blurb about each distro begins answering questions about the
new distro - Release notes are going to be the main page for referencing what
each distro is now and going forward from here
new 3049a8a Adjusting content minimally to include there being two
distros now. - May need to take this page back for redesign
new 8809fcf site builds successfully using podman nanoc container
new d9017a3 I didn't like the old-school 'flavors' word in the end, makes
it simpler
new 8adf8dd Layout and links, builds and looks good - number of small
layout issues visible in rendering -- hack/workaround to create bullet-like
effect for two paras, tagset didn't work - links verified but should
double check links when site is live just in case
new 0577071 Fixed design - visual overweight; imbalance + fix links - Had
to hack up a solution without bullets - Links are all good to best of, still
test when live
new 6c8ca10 thanks to arrfab's quick eyes, fixed a leftover URL fragment

The 7 revisions listed above as "new" are entirely new to this
repository and will be described in separate emails. The revisions
listed as "add" were already present in the repository and have only

Re: [CentOS] CentOS 8.0 1905 is now available for download

2019-09-24 Thread Randal, Phil
I feel your pain re Gnome.

Installing CentOS 8 on a VMware VM which uses BIOS boot mode using the
graphical installer results in an installer gui which is chopped off at the
right.

Workaround is to select the install option, hit the tab key, and append vga=819
and hit F10, which starts the graphical installer on a larger virtual display.

Or, better still, use EFI boot mode for your VM, and it all just works.

Make sure that the VMware virtual VGA adapter has enough RAM, too.

Cheers,

Phil
