Those error messages mean that the device isn't responding to the
Get-Descriptor request.

I think a step back and checking the usb subsystem, in general, might be a good
idea:

Let's start with the full output of

lspci

and follow up with the full output of

lsusb

and lsmod

All commands should be run as root

I just did - before seeing your post... I tried it on a Dell laptop also
running CentOS 7 and it worked fine. Besides the difference in hardware, the OS
on the laptop has not been updated for a number of months, possibly not since
late last year, while the OS on the desktop is completely updated.

Just tried a USB 2 port with a similar outcome:

kernel: usb 1-9: can't read configurations, error -32
kernel: usb usb1-port9: attempt power cycle
kernel: usb 1-9: new high-speed USB device number 23 using xhci_hcd
kernel: usb 1-9: unable to read config index 0 descriptor/all
kernel: usb 1-9: can't read configurations, error -32
kernel: usb 1-9: new high-speed USB device number 24 using xhci_hcd
kernel: usb 1-9: unable to read config index 0 descriptor/all
kernel: usb 1-9: can't read configurations, error -32
kernel: usb usb1-port9: unable to enumerate USB device

I also have Logitech Bluetooth mouse, an external harddisk, a Belkin USB-serial
adapter for my UPS, and a Canon scanner attached to other USB ports, all
working fine.

[CentOS] No sound after latest Firefox update (firefox-78.3.0-1.el6.centos.x86_64)

2020-09-29 Thread Robert Nichols

With Firefox updated to firefox-78.3.0-1.el6.centos.x86_64, I cannot get sound
from Firefox. I've tried restarting pulseaudio, also logging out and logging
back in. No help. Other A/V apps work just fine. Downgrading to
firefox-68.12.0-1.el6.centos.x86_64 makes sound work again. For now, I've
excluded version firefox-78.3.0-1 from yum updates.

Anyone else seeing this? Any hints?

most systems, the USB 3 ports hve a 'blue' tongue, while the 2 ports are
black or another color.

Hello Daniel,

Thank you for offering to assist with the Spanish translation of the wiki.

I have added you to the Spanish translation group and so you should
now have the ability to edit pages within the wiki.centos.org/es/
directory structure. I am assuming that you have created your wiki
login as DanielAguilar, as specified in the relevant section of the
"contribute" page. [1]

Perhaps the first thing you might like to do is to ensure that the
current Spanish pages are up to date when compared with the English
versions?

Does anything show up when the device is plugged in. There should be info
in dmesg when a device is added or removed, even if the kernel does not
recognize it. If you do not have that, then the USB port or device is not
working. The lines will say something like "New USB device found,
idVendor=<>, idProduct=<>, bcdDevice=<>. That data is independent of your
drivers.

Also the command lsusb and /proc/bus/input/devices can give data.

[CentOS] Logitech C922 webcam

2020-09-29 Thread H
Just installed the above USB webcam but it is not recognized by dmesg | grep
usb, nor does Zoom recognize it. I was under the understanding it should not
require a driver, or?

I am running CentOS 7.

Thanks.

[CentOS] External harddisk

2020-09-29 Thread H
I have an old external harddisk, Toshiba 320 Gb, with a USB connector that I
wanted to check for contents. It did not start up when connected and I could
not hear the motor spinning. After leaving it in the freezer overnight the
motor spins but it is not recognized by my computer. I disassembled it and
could see that the head assembly rests outside the disk but when it is powered
on, the head first moves to the center of the disk, then to the periphery and
finally back to the resting position. This happens every few seconds and
leaving it connected overnight changed nothing.

I installed smartmontools but the disk is not even recognized by my system as a
/dev/sd* device and therefore not accessible to smartd (at least as far as I
know it.)

Any suggestions for what I could try? I am running CentOS 7.

Thank you.

[CentOS] CentOS 7 (2009) in progress

2020-09-29 Thread Johnny Hughes
OK all .. RHEL 7.9 source code updated today.

I am currently working to start the build of CentOS 7 based on that
[CentOS 7 (2009) ].

Currently, we need to bootstrap and then build llvm-toolset-9.0 and
rust-toolset-1.41 as some of the released packages need those toolsets.
I also need to check devtoolset-7 and devtoolset-8 and see if we need
any updates to pacakges there before we start the main build .. and I
need to see of any of the packages need devtoolset-9.

Once we have all those prerequisites completed, I can start the main builds.

The goal, as usual, is to get the CR repo populated in 7 to 10 days:
https://wiki.centos.org/AdditionalResources/Repositories/CR

And the final release completed in less than 40 days.

Thanks,
Johnny Hughes
