It'll run zoneminder (to create a dvr for video surveillance). I've been
using Cent5.3 (non-server) since it was released, and I used Fedora

I decided on CentOS for the server for a couple reasons:
* I'm sticking with RH-style distros (I even got my 80 year old

* zoneminder supports CentOS (they have a guide to set it up on Cent).

[CentOS] RAID support in kernel?

2011-01-29 Thread Michael Klinosky
Hello.
I'm setting up a computer that will run 'CentOS 6 server'. The MB is an
Asus with a hw raid controller (Promise PDC-20276), which I want to use
in RAID-1 mode. I noted (from a MB website) that it also needs a driver
- which is probably why it's called a 'fakeraid'.

So, I've been trying to determine if any recent kernels support this
chip. Using google.com/linux, I found lots of hits dating about 2002 -
04, and referencing the 2.4 kernel (which had the driver compiled into
it). But, nothing newer.

I checked kernel.org and kernelnewbies.org - I see that raid-1 is
supported. But, I can't find any reference to this chip.

How can I find out what drivers are compiled into a given kernel? Or,
basically what hardware a given kernel supports?

I have a similar situation. I'm not quite familiar enough with linux to

I boot my laptop home computer (1 user) into runlevel 5 with
*auto-login*. It has wifi built-in, and I wanted to set it up to
auto-connect, _and_ not have to enter the keyring password.

I tried making the keyring's password the same as the user's - didn't
work. To test the process, I turned off auto-login - it worked!

My semi-newbie skills led me to the conclusion that, if gnome does not
have to ask for the password (auto-login mode), then the keyring manager
never sees it (and asks for it anyway). Conversely, if gnome has to ask
for the password (standard log-in mode), the keyring manager sees it,
and the keyring is unlocked.

To help me learn a bit more, inform me how much this applies to your
situation. You're working on a server; do you use auto-login for your
own account?

[CentOS] which gcc package?

2010-05-08 Thread Michael Klinosky
Hello.
I tried to compile a program (plugger), but I don't have *any* sort of
compiler installed. This is on Cent5.3.

So, I used Package Manager, concentrating on gcc. But, it seems that I
have a choice, thus:
gcc-4.1.2-46.el5.i386
gcc-4.1.2-46.el5_4.1.i386
gcc-4.1.2-46.el5_4.2.i386
gcc-c++-4.1.2-46.el5.i386
gcc-c++-4.1.2-46.el5_4.1.i386
gcc-c++-4.1.2-46.el5_4.2.i386
... along with some others (Fortran, Ada, Java, and Obj-C).

I'm thinking that I need only 1 'flavor' (say, gcc-4.1.2-46.el5.i386 and
gcc-c++-4.1.2-46.el5.i386) - correct?

I tried a google.com/linux search - the only link that seemed helpful
was http://gcc.gnu.org/ -- where I found only this:
The core distribution includes the C language front end as well as the
shared components. I have no clue which package would be the FE, and
what the shared components are. Perhaps 1 of those packages is the core?

I've been at this for a couple hours now, and I'm still lost. Making a
long story really short - where is java supposed to be installed?
(/usr/local? I don't have a /usr/java.)

*Some* details:
I figured that I just needed the plugin. Well, apparently there isn't
one (not separate, on mozilla's plugin site). It seems that I have to
sym-link to the .so file. However, I can't find it (even used the File
Browser's 'search').

So, being that I have the basic 1.6.0 (no Update), I figured I'd just
install 1.6.0U20. Well, that's no so easy when it's not the usual RPM,
and you don't know where it should go.

I did find a dir with a bunch of java entries:
[r...@sr1220 lib]# pwd
/usr/lib
[r...@sr1220 lib]# ls java*
java:
java-1.3.1:
java-1.4.0:
java-1.4.1:
java-1.4.2:
java-1.5.0:
java-1.6.0:
java-ext:
But, they're empty.

The java wiki doesn't state a location, and neither
http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/linux.html#Java nor
http://www.java.com/en/download/help/linux_install.xml
were of any help. (Btw, ~/.mozilla/plugins is empty - and I don't see it
installed in /usr.)

Every path I try, I keep hitting a roadblock.

[CentOS] printer trouble - missing driver?

2010-03-27 Thread Michael Klinosky
I can't get my HP DeskJet D2345 (USB) to work on my CentOS 5.3 machine.
It'll work on another machine (with Fedora 7).

I compared the installation details (in CUPS http://localhost:631) -
seems that Cent does not have the driver. On the F7 machine, the device
is D2345 (HP D2300 series) and the driver is HP DeskJet D2300
Foomatic/hpijs. When I try to config my Cent machine for this printer,
I don't see that driver anywhere in the list.

I searched cups.org for D2345 and D2300 - no joy.

Can I merely copy some file (the driver?) to the Cent machine? (If so,
where would I find it?)

Or, how do I get this printer to work with CentOS 5.x?

* Details *
On the Cent box, I tried using the HP DeskJet (generic?) driver. But,
when I tell it to print (in an app or even a test page from cups), the
computer seems to go thru the motions, but the printer doesn't respond
at all (no noises, nothing). Indeed, cups even states that the job is
completed.

When I plug the printer into the Cent box, the message log reports:

When I tell CUPS to print a test page, several lines are issued in the
CUPS log; here are a few:

Apparently, you can't download just a ppd file. :/ It seems like I'd
have to download the whole hplip package (basically upgrade).

The F7 box (where the printer works) has version 1.7.4 of hplip; CentOS
5.3 comes with 1.6.7. My printer requires v 1.6.6. I found the ppd files
- the Cent box looks about right, compared to the F7 box (same files, etc.)

So, I'm wondering if I should just dl the latest and greatest hplip (v
3.10, I think). (Btw, this is just for home use.) Or, perhaps 5.3 can't

[CentOS] splash screen resolution

2010-03-03 Thread Michael Klinosky
I installed CentOS 5.3 on a desktop box, and I'm having a problem with
the splash screen resolution (during bootup).

I suppose that it somehow got configged when I set the GUI's screen (I
run in level 5). I think that, in finding the highest res for the GUI, I
went past the monitor's capability. But it's good now.

During boot, I get a funny 'double' display (2 pointers, 2 sets of
text). I can't find where to change it (thru the gui or manually). And,
yes, I did try searching (on google.com/linux and the CentOS wiki).

I didn't see anything in /boot/grub/grub.conf that would set the res. I
read about removing 'rhgb'; I tried it, and at least it uses an
appropriate resolution. But, I'd like to use the graphical boot screen.

How do I fix this?

Apr 12 16:43:25 ga7zx kernel: usb 1-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice

As this point, the whole system becomes an ice cube - I can't even
3-finger salute to reboot. This happened a few times - same result.

The board is a Gigabyte with an AMD Athlon 1.3 GHz cpu. Be aware that

[CentOS] wifi and the default keyring

2009-03-18 Thread Michael Klinosky
Hello.
I'm using my laptop (an Acer Aspire 3680, with built-in Atheros wifi). I
installed 5.2 on it, and it's working nicely. But, I have an issue with
the keyring. I should mention that this is my *first* experience with
keyrings.

When I set up the wifi, it stated basically that nm-applet wants to
access the default keyring, but it's locked. Enter password. So I did.
(I made one up.) So, every time I boot, it asks for the password.

Then, I found out about the trick of making it the same as the user's
login password. Yes, that works, _but only if 'auto-login' is disabled_.

It amounts to having to enter the login pw on every boot, or the default
keyring pw.

So, my question:
* Can I totally disable (remove?) the keyring stuff, and set up
nm-applet another way to get the wifi passphrase?
- or -
* Can I _permanently_ unlock the default keyring?
- or -
* Another trick? Whatever circumvents having to enter the keyring
password with 'auto-login' enabled.

[CentOS] need help with keyring

2009-03-09 Thread Michael Klinosky
I should mention that I'm a total newbie with keyrings! I tried
searching for help sites - found 1, but I still have a problem. If there
is a website (or sites) that explain this, please post it (them)!

Ok, so I have a laptop with wifi, running CentOS 5.2. When I boot it, it
finds the nearby wifi signals, and tries to connect to mine. To do this,
it puts up a window to get my default keyring password. Perhaps I needed
to config something?

Anyway, I found http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Tools/NetworkManager ,
which _seems_ to explain everything. However, my newbie-ness is
interfering with this process. NB - I use gnome.

The problem is that it's still asking for the default password. I'm
fairly sure that I didn't *complete* that process (one issue - that
password is different from my user password.)

It states that I need (?) to change the keyring password to be the same
as the user password - but I can't figure out how. The last sentence:
(Using gnome-keyring-manager), highlight the keyring and select Change
Keyring Password from the Keyring menu of gnome-keyring-manager.

I don't have 'Change' anything there - whether as $ or #.

What do I need to do to satisfy it (so that it doesn't ask for the
password)?

Re: [CentOS] trying to install 5.2 on a laptop

2009-03-01 Thread Michael Klinosky
Ok, I modified xorg.conf, but it didn't help (still getting that error,
and X refuses to start).

I could re-install, but I don't like that notion (I definitely don't
want all the packages in the default setup, so I have to go thru every
group and sub-group to de-select most - that was a big hassle with a
'keypad mouse').

So, is there another way? Would it work if I merely put the synaptics.so
on a usb stick and copied it?

Have you verified if the synaptics package itself is installed:

   rpm -q synaptics

'not installed'. Is there more to this package than just the library (.so)?

If not, is this laptop connected to the Internet? If so, you can do:

yum -y install synaptics

This will install the synaptics package, though doesn't install the module.

hmmm ... I didn't think of that (along with a few other readers!)

Ok, it's installed ... reboot.

YES :) :) It at least boots properly! Thaank you!

Like I mentioned, I'm new-ish to linux. And, I use the gui exclusively.
So, it never occured to me to install in runlevel=3. I figured that I'd
have to get it to boot somehow, then use Applications Add/Remove
Software. Same with vi - it just occurred to me that I could have easily
tried 'man vi'.

The main things you need to verify are the following sections in the
 xorg.conf:

 Section ServerLayout
 Identifier Layout0
 Screen 0 Screen0 0 0
 Screen 1 Screen1 RightOf Screen0

One difference from yours -
Identifier Default Layout
Does that matter?
Also, I don't have Screen 1 - I guess because I didn't set up multiple
screens.

 Section InputDevice

Same as yours.

I've found an old IBM OmniBook 800 and am curious whether I can get it

I think) and the machine won't boot from it, so it'd require a boot
floppy. Any suggestions? Or is CentOS entirely the wrong Linux to be
 thinking about for this?

True, this is out of my league, and I'm just brainstorming, but ...

Does it have a pcmcia slot? Does anyone make a USB-pcmcia adapter?

Set up a usb stick to boot from.

Good? Or, am I totally off base? :)

states 'firefox-3.0-0.beta5.6.el5'.
Are you saying that yum will bump it to at least 3.0.5?

RHEL made an exception w/ FireFox and updates - and it was justifiable.

I can agree with that! I see that they jumped over version 2 entirely.

It sounds nice so far. Ned stated that there's a mix of vintages (some
mature, others are quite new).

And, I'll certainly check the LiveCD (I've used Fedora's).

[CentOS] new user - with questions

2009-02-20 Thread Michael Klinosky
Hello.
I've been using Fedora since about the FC6 era, for home use. I don't
like the 6 month upgrade (or re-install) concept, and I don't need the
latest greatest versions of apps. So, CentOS sounds enticing.

But, I have some questions. I found 2 centos websites (primary and
wiki), and checked the forum - but couldn't find answers to these concerns.

Is CentOS basically like Fedora? (Well, except for the updates every 6
months!) As in 'look feel', underlying operations, etc. (Btw, I know
about removing upstream branding.)

Any caveats? Meaning, does it use the same repositories that Fedora
does? Are there any major or significant differences?

I should just go for the most recent package (5.2) - yes? About how old
are the apps? (A few months?)

How are application updates handled? 5.2 has firefox-3.0-0.beta5.6.el5.
I saw (on the Firefox website) that 3.0.6 is out. Will an app update get
that version, or something just a bit older? (btw, I know about
backporting.)

Does centos use Plymouth? I have a somewhat recent computer (about 3
years old) that has an intel chipset (which Plymouth can't handle yet,
and so it needs xdriver=vesa during install).
