 have you by any chance ever used CPAN to install perl modules ?

 cpan wouldn't cause RPM conflicts, since rpm doesn't know about what
 CPAN installs.
 Chances are he has some perl RPM's from a third party repo.

 fabian,

 you might try something like the bad-guys acl i setup a long time ago in
 named.conf

 change the ips as you see fit

 // Default named.conf generated by install of bind-9.2.4-2
 //
 // r.initials August 29 2005
 //
 acl bad-guys {
 201.114.231.0/24;
 201.114.236.0/24;
 };
 logging {
 category lame-servers { null; };
 };
 options {
 version Bind;
 directory /var/named; // working directory
 listen-on { 127.0.0.1; redactedx.y.z.a; };
 listen-on-v6 { none; };
 allow-transfer { redactedx.y.z.a; redactedx.y.z.b;};
 blackhole { bad-guys; };
 dump-file /var/named/data/cache_dump.db;
 statistics-file /var/named/data/named_stats.txt;
 //  pid-file named.pid;   // Put pid file in working
 dir
 allow-query { any; };   // This is the default
 recursion yes; // Do provide recursive service or not???
 };
 include /etc/rndc.key;

 I've already used Heartbeat between two centos machines acting as
 gateway/iptables firewall and it worked perfectly.
 The only 'problem' is that iptables connection status is of course not
 shared between the two nodes.
 Never used shorewall though.

 Any list which you trust enough to make the decision *which* mails you
 accept for you.
 Which would leave none for me.

 Even sbl.spamhaus.org contains a blacklist, which sometimes lists
 because of the name the machine has (CBL that is).

 Ralph

 DNSBL has information on many RBLs together with statistics on their
 effectiveness:

 http://stats.dnsbl.com/

 Other popular RBLs besides Spamhaus include Spamcop, PSBL and
 uceprotect.

 As Ralph says, any RBL should be used with a certain amount of caution
 as
 it has the potential to cause FPs (some more so than others). An
 alternative
 approach is to use such RBLs as part of a scoring system such as
 SpamAssassin. This is particularly useful for RBLs that you don't trust
 to
 outright reject mail at the smtp level.

 If you want to improve on the performance of sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org, I
 would
 first look at switching to the combined zen.spamhaus.org zone which also
 contains the pbl.spamhaus.org zone. My own data shows
 sbl-xbl.spamhaus.orgto block around 50% of spam whereas
 zen.spamhaus.org hits on around 90% of spam with very few FPs for me -
 YMMV. You should monitor performance closely.

 Anyone have any experience dealing with SURBL? I have a client who's
 domain
 and IP is not listed in SURBL, but their client in China is using SURBL
 and
 my client's emails are getting blocked. Can't seem to find how SURBL is
 blocking them

[CentOS] help required

2008-10-16 Thread fabian dacunha
Dear ALl,

I have the following live setup .
Centos 5.1 running as a Mail and DNS server with the following software

Sendmail ver
MailScanner ver
squirrel mail
clam av
spamassassin
mailwatch

we have about 250 mail users all with no shell and every thing is working
perfectly fine

now i wd like to know the following .

1) if i have a copy of my /etc/passwd file and the /etc/skel/shadow file
and if my current HDD crashes ..
now if i make a new centos server with all the above software and jus copy
the password n shadow file in the right directories will all the users
able to login into the system as before.
or is anything more required to be done.
To explain more clearly if my current hdd crashes i can get up a new
centos machine but creating all the 250 + users wd be a big problem
specially the passwords.

2) i would like to also know about MX records

i mean DNS server having MX with same priority n MX with different priority

i right now have a primary n secondary mail server that is dns server with
different MX records and its workin fine

if i have 2 servers with same MX priority do i need to create the smae
users on both my centos servers so tht if one server fails othe one is
operational . i do presume the above is corect or is there any other way

apprecite your help

[CentOS] problem with FTP server---solved

2008-09-24 Thread fabian dacunha

Dear ALl,

here below is the problem i had earlier and had posted my problem to the
list. thnks and appreciate all ur sugesstions but i did manage to solve
googling arround
right below i hav the solution may help someone arround

 Dear All,

 i have the following centos FTP local FTP server having the following

 Centos 5
 vsftpd-2.0.5-10.el5

 its been running fine for abt 2 years or so

 Now with IE5 or IE6 when i say ftp://ip address of FTP server it asks me
 for the username and password and if its correct i directly go to the
 /var/ftp/pub directly which is perfect

 You should contact support for IE7 and ask them that.

 Another thing to try, something I always recommend for people
 using web browsers to connect to ftp sites that are not anonymous,
 is to ftp with this url:

 ftp://username:password@address/path/

 Of course don't include the 's

 nate

Solution

In /etc/vsftpd.conf have the following

chroot_list_enable=YES
chroot_list_file=/etc/vsftpd/chroot_list

create a file chroot_list and add the user who gonna ftp to the ftp server
the users home directory is the ftp root directory
Obviously the ftp user is a local user

so it works perfect .. but i still wonder why IE6 was working fine

thnks

fabian

2) have another server with same value of MX so it cd load balance and
also doc says if one server is down or unavaliable the oher server would
receive mail

now my query is ... if i now configure a second mail server with same MX
priority .

 Having multiple servers with the same MX priority works fine (I prefer to
 think of this as distance as the lower ones have higher priority).
 There's
 no good reason to have multiple distances other than the shortest for
 final
 delivery and one or more with higher in case the primary is not available
 for some reason.

a) do i have to create all the existing user accounts on my existing
 email
server to this new server
cause i already hav about 300+ email users already

 No, the secondary MX server(s) don't need any user accounts. Using
 postfix, we do generate a virtual file for each secondary MX server
 containing all the valid addresses for the domain(s) served by the primary
 server, allowing the MX servers to reject invalid accounts without having
 real user accounts.

 There are some good arguments for having a single MX server rather than
 multiple MX servers as it prevents spammers from attempting to deliver
 mail
 through the higher distance MX servers which may well not have the same
 anti-spam rules. At one of our regional ISP customers with about 10,000
 e-
 mail accounts, we use a single MX server to accept incoming messages,
 This
 server runs postfix, amavisd-new, and clamav to pre-screen incoming
 messages for worms (Windows is the Virus) and phishing messages, then it
 forwards clean messages to a cluster of systems that do spamassassin
 checking and message delivery to the user's Maildir message stores which
 are NFS mounted on a central server.

 The MX server in this case rejects about 2,000,000 messages a day using a
 variety of IP filters, and delivers about 250,000 messages a day. It has
 a
 load average less than 1.00 except during the daily maintenance and
 security audits.

 It actually is the primary MX server for two distinct groups of domains,
 each with a separate user base. Each machine that is home to the user's
 home directories updates its own section of the postfix virtual table,
 using rsync to update the MX server whenever anything changes with the
 users. The MX server uses the postfix transport file to direct mail to
 the
 appropriate cluster servers to deliver mail.

 A real simple test would be to bring down the primary and send yourself

 should have a header from your backup server also.

 hard to say what happened when you downloaded, what program did you use
 to download it it?`wget` has a habit of creating a .1 file if its
 told to download a file that already exists in the same directory.
 obviously, that first file you list above is way too short. Its
 possible that 2nd file is the whole .iso, did you run a md5sum against it
 ?

 Most of the mirrors do NOT have the DVD .iso file as its just too
 big. I'd suggest using a torrent program such as rtorrent or
 ctorrent or whatever, with the .torrent file that should have been in
 the same directory as that .ISO

 there ya go. it saved it as two pieces, rather than appending
 (sometimes wget is annoying this way, there's a bazillion flags to
 modify its behavior)

 $ cat CentOS-5.2-i386-bin-DVD.iso CentOS-5.2-i386-bin-DVD.iso.1
 fullDVD.iso

 and THEN md5sum this NEW file.

Thanks a million

really appreciate

i did cat the file as u said
n it did a md5sum
it worked like a charm

 I just updated from an i386 CentOS 5 system today, using the reccommendeds
 steps on my server, and it went fine.

 So it *should* also go fine for you, but, as has been said before, Your
 Mileage May Vary.

 IIRC, that's true if default config file wasn't modified with certain
 parameters. Do I mis-remember? IIRC, upgrade works correctly even if
 they changed that config parameter. So, better safe than sorry.

 If I mis-remember, please forgive an old fart with half-heimer's. :-))

[CentOS] is centos update safe

2008-06-26 Thread fabian dacunha

Dear All,

I am curently running a CENTOS server with the following setup

CentOS release 5 (Final)
Kernel 2.6.18-8.1.8.el5xen on an i686
bind-9.3.3-10.el5
sendmail-8.13.8-2.el5
apache httpd-2.2.3-11.el5_1.centos.3
MailScanner ver 4.66.5
ClamAV 0.92
SpamAssassin version 3.2.4
SquirrelMail ver 1.4.13

Now all this have been workin perfectly fine for a long time.

now if i do a yum upgrade i see the following

Install 29 Package(s)
Update 415 Package(s)
Remove   0 Package(s)

and the total download size is abt 579 M

i jus wanted to know if i could SAFELY apply the updates since its a live
server running our companys primary DNS and mail server

has any body done this b4

i know the Centos will be upgraded to 5.2

but has anybody applied these updates and its been workin fine after reboot
and also about the various software currently running on the server

[CentOS] DNS query

2008-06-24 Thread fabian dacunha
Dear All,

i have the following setup

CentOS 5 server running as a primary DNS server for a long time and is
working perfectly fine

the server is on public IP and we have abt 5 zones apart from the reverse
n local zone

now our sister company have recently setup their own DNS and we are
supposed to use it.
earlier our cleints were using a host file

now on my master dns server in /etc/named.conf i created a new zone with
the following statement

zone cse.net.kw IN {
type slave;
masters { 172.31.1.240; };
 file cse.db;
allow-query { any; }; // the default
   allow-transfer { none; };
};

and when i reload the dns server the file cse.db is not created
also in /var/log/messages i c the following

Jun 24 18:17:41 kmdns1 named[1771]: loading configuration from
'/etc/named.conf'
Jun 24 18:17:41 kmdns1 named[1771]: zone cse.net.kw/IN: refresh:
non-authoritative answer from master 172.31.1.240#53 (source 0.0.0.0#0)

actually i would want all the cleints to query the 172.31.1.240 DNS server
without adding this IP in their configurtion . all the cleint hav our
master dns server in their own setup

so actually query 172.31.1.240 DNS server through our DNS

apprecite your help

or cd i have contitional forwarding something like when a client queries
the 172.31.1.240 our master DNS jus forwards the queries to 172.31.1.240
instead of sending it out on the internet
since 172.31.1.0 network is connected directly and is a part of out intranet

really wd apprecite your help and ideas with examples

regards

fabian

 add this to your bind options section

 forwarders { 172.31.1.240; };

 and restart named, your named will now forward all requests that
 it's not authoritative for to the above system.

 nate

Dear Nate

Thnks a million really apprecite for ur immediate reply
actually i was little confused

i had used the forwarder statment but it was at the start of the
named.conf section and the when i reloaded named it was giving me error
saying the statemnt not valid so then i created a zone
and included the the forwader statement in the zone i created but was not
workin
and also i had created a slave zone for 172.1.1.240 but also it didnt work
but moment i added forwarder statement in bind options section it worked
beautifullly

i jus didnt try putting the forwarders in the right place

thnks a million
