I think I managed to get FreeBSD 9 installed using the freebsd 8.x
virsh/virt-manager profile. After this I installed the virtio drivers.
Wat have you tried?

I warn you FreeBSD on KVM+Centos is terrible, really bad performance,
even with virtio drivers.
CPU stays at 20% even when doing nothing and network performance is
abysmal.
I believe there are going to be big improvements in v10, though.

I too wanted to use PFSense on KVM/EL6 but network performance was
disappointing. My network engineers reverted to using VMware ESXi for
the time being.
My hope is with Fbsd 10 which includes virtio drivers by default (and
also has a SMP friendly PF : ).

BTW, here's a QCOW2 of it, import image as RHEL6 profile (has all the
virtio stuff):
http://li.nux.ro/download/openstack/images/fbsd10-snap-20130316-r248381-
TESTING.qcow2

The root passwd is password so change it ASAP!

Even with this image I could not saturate 1 Gbps link (just rudimentary
test with fetch -o /dev/null), but it's still an improvement.

 Greetings,

 - Original Message -

DUH... I thought you were saying you had a disc or disc image of the
FreeBSD install media. You already have a FreeBSD VM disk image? In that
case, what is it from? Is it a KVM VM or did it come from some other virt
platform like VMware, VirtualBox, Parallels, Xen or what?

You may run into an issue with drivers if it came from another virt
platform that uses product specific tools (like VMware tools for
example)... where to make it work correctly you have to remove their
tools. This is probably less of an issue with a FreeBSD VM though.

There is also v2v which supposedly can convert a disk image of a VM from
one product format to another. I haven't used it. There should be good
documentation for v2v if you do a search.

Understandable, but since a lot of people are still going to stick with

worth fixing.

I use the following to prevent hanging at startup with LDAP.

 nss_initgroups_ignoreusers root,ldap,bacula,named
 timelimit 30
 bind_timelimit 30
 bind_policy soft

This is because some daemons start prior to the start of OpenLDAP
 service.

Obviously adding haldaemon, dbus, radvd, tomcat, etc. or other 'users'
for daemons that launch prior to your LDAP server application is
useful
but those users would have to be listed in /etc/passwd|group to
 significantly benefit.

 Craig

Hi Craig,

The problem I have with listing those ignoreusers, is you need to know
in advance which services are on the system, and that's not always the
case. Or if a user installs a new daemon, he'll break his start-up of
the server should he ever be unable to connect to the LDAP systems.

Perhaps I'm asking too much, but could anyone try the following config
(in a VM or so, with networking disabled)? This is the one that is
causing boots to hang indefinitely, even though there are bind_policy
soft parameters involved.

/etc/ldap.conf

[CentOS] LDAPs causing System Message Bus to hang when there's no network

2011-04-28 Thread Mattias Geniar
Hi Everyone,

I'm experiencing the following problem, for which I've not yet found a
resolution. It's been discussed elsewhere, but unfortunately nothing
actually solves it.

Here's my /etc/ldap.conf file:
#
ldap_version 3
base ou=people,o=xxx
uri ldaps://server1.domain.be/ ldaps://server2.domain.be/
bind_policy soft
scope sub
timelimit 3
bind_timelimit 5
idle_timelimit 120
referrals no
ssl start_tls
ssl on
tls_checkpeer yes
tls_cacertdir /etc/openldap/cacerts
#

And the relevant nsswitch:
#
passwd: files ldap
shadow: files ldap
group: files ldap
#

So that's pretty straight forward. My LDAP systems are running fine, and
I can authenticate to them.

However, the problem: when the client boots *without network
connectivity*, the server gets stuck/hangs at Start System Message
Bus. I've tracked this down to the following known bug in Redhat, but
it dates back to early 2010.
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=182464#c46

The solution works: if I comment out the group from nsswitch to only
load from files and not from ldap, it works and the system boots.
However, since most systems (and that includes ours) uses groups for
management, that's not a viable option.

We're running the very latest 5.6 with all packages (only from the
CentOS repo's) up-to-date.

Has anyone else ever solved this to still be able to keep the group ldap
entry in nsswitch.conf without having a server hang on boot if there's
no network?

Mattias

 Brgds

Hi Benjamin,

I tried that, but that just makes it hang upon the next service trying
to start (in our case: a zabbix monitoring daemon running as
zabbix/zabbix).

It works, if I include the entire list of all local users/groups that
can be ignored. However, that's not feasible when doing mass-deploys on
varied systems.

If there's a way to simply say ignore all users with UID's 500 that
could be a work-around I can live with, but it doesn't appear there is.

Mattias

Re: [CentOS] LDAPs causing System Message Bus to hang when there's no network

2011-04-28 Thread Mattias Geniar
Yes, the bug is actually older than that---Don't know if it's only RH
based systems (as so many things seem to work everywhere but RH and
 their offshoots) or ldap.
You should be able to fix it by changing /etc/ldap.conf. There is a
 default commented line in there

 #bind_policy hard

Uncomment it, change it to soft. (On the client.) Note this is
/etc/ldap.conf--in Fedora, if that's the client, I believe it's now
 /etc/pam_ldap.conf or possibly /etc/nss_ldap.conf.

I can't find the earlier bug at first glance, but it's FAR older than
2010, and they never bothered to fix it.

Has anyone else ever solved this to still be able to keep the group
ldap
entry in nsswitch.conf without having a server hang on boot if
there's
  no network?

See above. Darn, I wish I could find that older bug, so that I could
go
to the newer one you mention and point out that they've been unable to
fix it for far longer than a year. :) (I might do it anyway)

Grouchily yours, (Not at you, at RH for being unable to get such a
basic thing to work--actually, at one point, Fedora changed
bind_policy
to soft so that it would work, but now they're back to the broken
way.)

 --
 Scott Robbins

Hi Scott,

In case you're wondering, this is about the oldest entry (2006):
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=186527

The bind_policy didn't seem to have the wanted effect with me, it kept
trying to connect to LDAP server even after 10+ failed attempts, taking
1m50s on each and every attempt.

I read quite a few topics on that solving the issue, but it didn't seem
to be that case in my environment.
Are there other workarounds/tips if the bind_policy doesn't work? The
rc.local hack seems ... ugly ... and embarrassing if a client would
ever find it out. :-)

Mattias

The answer is not easily. It's possible to use a remote serial
connection to navigate through the installation options, tied to a
text to speech synthesizer and appropriate keyboard or speecto to text
controller. That would require a separate system with the speech to
text tools, such as the Dragon company's software, and the ability to
reliably handle the text commands. Since the text installer involves a
lot of hitting the tab key to bounce from line to line, even in the
pure text mode, it wouldn't be simple.

I suggest that you'd be better off collaborating with a competent RHEL
or CentOS administrator to tune a kickstart file to your needs, and
use that to deploy a pre-structured operating system configuration.

 Hello,

If you're interested in running Xen 4.0 hypervisor/dom0 on RHEL6,
take a look at here: http://wiki.xen.org/xenwiki/RHEL6Xen4Tutorial

It explains steps needed to rebuild Xen 4.0.1 src.rpm from Fedora on
 RHEL6,
and how to fetch dom0 capable 2.6.32.x kernel from upstream git
 repository.

It also shows how to get libvirt/virt-manager working with Xen on RHEL6.

 Hopefully it helps :)

Sorry to redirect, but have you considered OpenVPN? If you are only
connecting Win/Mac/Linux/Unix VPN Clients, I find it easy, secure and
robust.

As to PPTP, I'm afraid I cannot help (never needed it/never did it).

It has been on some of my CentOS installs and not on others. I can't
explain why and why not. Once you know about the issue, it's easy to
fix. CentOS is not the only Gnome distribution that does this.

  Hi folks,

I would like to test Xen3.3 on CentOS 5.5 on an older machine which is
not 64bit capable.

Since this is just a first impression test I do not want to fuzz with
compiling the kernels and tools myself (that comes in a later step).

Can someone please point me to a repo with 32bit Xen3.3 kernels for
CentOS 5? GITCO supplies 64bit kernels only, and googling brought up
nothing else.

Thanks for any hint or help.

Not sure what you're asking, but yes, you can assign a tunnel IP to a VM. I
have multiple IPs associated with separate VMs. They have a local IP and the
TUN0 IP and access both networks without issue.

 HWADDR=xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx

 Don't you need a
  BRIDGE=br0
 line here?

Yes. Some more useful info can be found in the doc:

 3. Edit /etc/libvirt/qemu/networks/default.xml

 network
   namedefault/name
   uuid...long uuid.../uuid
   bridge name=br0 /
   forward mode=route dev=eth0/
 /network

Why is this third step needed?

Isn't it enough to simply add a network interface to the guest with br0 as
source? (that's how I'm currently proceeding)

e.g.:
interface type='bridge'
mac address='yy:yy:yy:yy:yy:yy' /
source bridge='br0' /
model type='virtio' /
/interface

10G is plenty. I have it running with about 5G

[r...@xm-c32-001 ~]# vgs
  VG #PV #LV #SN Attr VSize VFree
  rootvg 1 5 0 wz--n- 5.88G 576.00M

The VG is 6G. Actual use is about 3G. This machine runs fileserver,
squid, DNS. ___

Oh, sorry, I thought you said you couldn't upgrade. Have you considered
 man yum?
   downgrade
Will try and downgrade a package from the version
currently installed to the previously highest version
(or the specified version). The depsolver will not
necessarily work, but if you specify all the packages it should
work (and thus. all the simple cases will work). Also this
does not work for installonly packages, like Kernels.
downgrade operates on groups, files, provides and filelists
just like the install command.

mark and no, this isn't twitter, and no, know is not
spelled no

 No, won't work.

You can, as someone suggested, back up your files and re-install but
there's very little chance application data and files will be
 compatible.
