I'll answer this myself, since I just stumbled over the solution. It
seems that the version of Git shipping with CentOS has a little problem
with Github. The solution is to add the username to the URL like this:

 # git remote set-url origin

I created a newer version of git for CentOS-6 that works better with
github. Hopefully Red Hat will upgrade to this version for EL6:

As far as I understand, this error is server side because GItHub does
not allow write operations over HTTP.

Hi Derek,

Welcome to the list.

My suggestion would be to install centos and start configuring it to
do everything you want it to do. It might take some time, so you
might want to install it on another computer or on a virtual machine.

If you're running a 64 bit version of Linux on a computer with virtual-
ization support enabled, consider using KVM for a virtual environment.
Otherwise consider installing VirtualBox. Either one will let you
create a VM for experimentation while you keep your main workstation
fully functional.

Also, check out the www.centos.org website. The wiki and howtos are
very good. If you have a nearby Linux Users Group, try to attend a
meeting and/or join their mailing list.

Agree, just dive in.

+1 on the advice to create a virtual machine an learn there. After your
initial install create a snapshot, then you can easily revert to a
bare-bones clean install and practice doing things over and over. You
can also revert between snapshots to work on different things. This
really helps learning and testing. My rule: if I haven't created a
snapshot yet... I am probably tardy in doing so.

I'm still a fan of good old $$$ VMware Workstation. But VirtualBox
works. And GNOME3 now provides Boxes as well, a nice VM management
front-end.

Welcome!
Joining the list is a great start.  Also, reading some of the FAQ would be a
good idea.
In case you're not familiar with what CentOS really is, maybe check this:
  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CentOS

As others have mentioned, a VM would be good.  I personally prefer VirtualBox
since it seems to perform very well without taxing the host too much.

Good luck!

Although I said I am new to Centos, I have been using various flavours
of Linux over the past 10 years. The last Redhat version of Linux was
Redhat 9.

I have a small virtual LAN using Vsphere, but this could be changed to
KVM in Centos... (sorry for the wrong mailing list).

I am also into C programming, which I think Centos could be a good
platform to programme on.

You need to learn something about what you're doing.

For one, how did webmin install postfix? If from a tarball, then
 there's a
bunch of stuff to do. If, on the other hand, you'd done it the *right*
way, with a yum install, the scripts in the package would have created

Webmin as shipped will use Yum on CentOS to handle software management
(other than Perl modules). From the way the information is presented
by the OP it seems likely that the default method is used in this
instance.

The error is this:

postfix: fatal: file /etc/postfix/main.cf: parameter mail_owner:
 unknown user name value: postfix

You are missing the postfix user id in /etc/passwd. If that user id
is missing then it is likely that your install procedure did not
complete properly. I would suggest using yum remove post followed by
yum install postfix issued as the root user from the command line.

The problem is the defacto standardized address obfuscation on the
mailman web archive is easily reversible. All it takes is someone with
the interest to write an automated 'use this address to email this
mailman list' bot. The From addresses need to be rendered irreversibly
