Origami Star Wars - Rebel Alliance
If any of you have kids that like Star Wars, you may have come across the Origami Yoda series. In it the kids in a middle school make origami (and other material) finger puppets from Star Wars to help them deal with your stereotypical school woes. My son has decided it's time to form a Rebel Alliance! He's recruited a few friends and I asked him what he was rebelling against. His answer floored me: Common Core. Understand, my son is 9, severe AD/HD with Asperger traits. He's in the 4th grade, in self-contained special ed to work on social controls but has the goal to be main-streamed next year. He's advanced academically but when he gets on a train of thought only the end of the line will end the conversation and tangent questions. I suggested he blog about what his group is doing it and am going to help him with it. I'm going to be the holocron recorder (he's making me Qui Gon finger puppet, he's General Grievous) and together we'll be writing up posts and scanning pictures of finger puppets and their interjections. I look at this as a way for him to get a better understanding of communication, organizing his thoughts and expressing his views. He's also going to get an understanding of debate (yes, I'm going to allow comments but plan to filter the garbage before he gets it) and explaining his position intellectually. Why am I putting this here? For one, I wanted to share it... it's awesome in my mind that my son is doing this on his own. Second, I need ideas for a domain... the title's a mouthful. I'm not sure if this is going to be a blogger.com site or if I should host a WordPress (I could always migrate). Third, if anyone (or their kids) want to join us you'll need a finger puppet! A ton of that depends on how the next 12-18 months plays out. I'm going to put my ideologue hat aside for a moment and talk pure DC politics. Truth be told, if the GOP wants to maintain control they need to not go after the button issues, rather McConnell needs to be the exact opposite of Harry Reid. As Majority Leader, Reid controlled the items that came to the floor of the Senate. There were a number of items in your list that could have been debated, amended and voted on that Reid did not bring to the floor. From a political perspective it would actually be better for the GOP to run the Congress as openly and transparently as possible. Let there be debates and let the American people see where their elected officials actually stand on all of the issues. It's funny, Viv, you said that the DNC needs to, start playing the GOP game. As Jerry said, national elections are like a pendulum. I agree to a large degree, look back over time and you'll see the shifting. I also disagree because I don't think that the American public has been convinced that the GOP will need to be replaced then. Presidential year elections have larger voter turn-out and even more money involved. Ideologue that I am (and I can afford to be, I'm *not* an elected official nor am I a part of any party organization), my hope is that both sides field fresh candidates. I'm expecting to be disappointed in that but I can hope. We're going to see the DNC decry anything that the GOP has done, the GOP go after administrative bogey-men and at least 17.5% of the candidates will have a video where there sleeves are rolled up and they are holding their suit coat over their shoulder. I don't know if they've done much in the way of indoctrination but I honestly doubt it. Health question
2014 has not been a good year for my health. The latest issue to come to light is (and I'm quoting my doctor here) arthritis or some kind of degeneration in the neck. I started having pain in my left shoulder and down my arm in June, was prescribed an anti-inflamatory that worked after about a week, stopped taking it and the pain came back about two weeks ago. The Dr. says he thinks this was caused by whatever's going on in my neck (he had a C-Spine X-Ray taken) and says I need to have Physical Therapy. I'm fine with that but I also have a good chiropractor. My question is can I do both the Physical Therapy and the chiropractor? Until Later! C. Migrating SQL Servers - Best practices?
We're rebuilding our network infrastructure and this includes rebuilding one web/data and one puer data server from scratch. The apps require MS SQL Server up to 2008 so that's what has been installed. The databases on the pure data server are huge in some cases (75gb). If you had time (we're 2 weeks from launch but the servers are up now) and a dedicated pipe, what would be your prefered method to ship the data over? I found this a funny compilation http://www.buzzfeed.com/bennyjohnson/things-democrats-would-have-freaked-out-about-if-bush-had-do#289ccxl * HOWEVER * Bush ran as a compassionate conservative for the 2000 election... I don't recall if his tone changed in 2004 but then again I don't think it had to given his competition. Why I still call BS even though some policies have continued under Obama: * The Affordable Care Act - This is a taxpayer funded healthcare management system that requires Americans to purchase a product or be penalized by a federal agency. It further directs and defines services provided to americans and mandates employer level contributions to plans. It also creates penalties for high-end cadillac plans and increases FICA medicare taxes for those that make above a certain level (there is a 0.09% FICA Medicare surcharge for those making in excess of $200,000). All these combine to create a larger federal governmental structure that is stronger and more insinuated in the daily lives of citizens. * The actions of Eric Holder - The Holder Department of Justice has been more litigious than any that I can recall * Ardent support of policy changes for social issues such as minimum wage, abortion (including parental consent) and LGBT issues (yeah, I know you mentioned that). * Speeches that directly support income redistribution There are more but unfortunately I have to end it there due to the time. My point is this: It's not in his similarity to Bush that makes him a moderate conservative (wow, there's a term that doesn't exist) but in the actions he has taken to directly grow the size of the federal government, create dependencies on it and lessen the power of the individual states through the same fiscal tactics that brought about the 55 mile per hour speed limit. VB.NET Question
I remember being pointed somewhere before about getting help for VB.NET but at this moment I can't find it (look at the timestamp, there might be a reason for that). I'm working with a custom class in a disk-based app that creates a text file. One requirement is that if a certain set of parameters is met (name and value match), I have to, copy that line, adjust these values and save both lines to the file. For brevity's sake I'll annotate my example: Public class a Public name as string Public Value1 as Decimal Public Value2 as Decimal ... End Class Dim test as New a() ... if test.Name = CopyMe Dim copy as a = test.clone() copy.Name = Copied copy.value1 -= 10 copy.value2 += 5 test.value2 -= 5 writeln(copy) End if writeln(test) Okay, the pseudocode's atrocious but again, look at the hour and forgive me please. I have tried shallow clones as well as deep clones (which borked because of serialization). In EVERY case I'm getting the original values that were in the test object before it was cloned. It's as if VB is saying, yeah, I see your code and I'll run it but nothing's going to change your values. I've tried declaring GET and SET properties in the class. The only thing I haven't done (because I didn't think it would be necessary) is to either come up with a way to create the copy fresh... which I don't think would work because the values in the test object aren't being adjusted... or somehow move the logic back into the class. Anyone have an idea as to why VB is creating the copy and then saying, screw you, I'm not changing any values! Until Later! C. Re: VB.NET Question
Oh yeah, there's a *ton* of code with this. The actual class has more than 50 properties with the constructor building out most of the data. And in answering your question I just realized where I was going wrong with mine! What I'm looking at in the output is a single parameter, Dataline which is a fixed-width text value. That value is being set as a part of the constructor and does not get re-built... so my cloning/copying/whatever may damn well have been working and I would never have seen it because what I was using as my test... ug.. Okay, I'm going to blame this all on the lack of sleep and get it fixed. Thanks for helping me find the glass cleaner, Maureen! Until Later! C. Also, how do you feel about troops going back in to attempt to fix the current mess. Anyone feel like sharing? My feelings on the US history in Iraq haven't changed. I was proud when we went in to remove Iraq from Kuwait. I was there (on the ready carrier in the Med) when Hussein put his troops back on the border in 94 and the US was a part of the coalition supporting the no-fly zone. I distinctly separate Afghanistan from Iraq post 9-11. OBL was being protected by the Taliban (anyone remember this http://youtu.be/KzjVGG0ja4c?t=19s ) and Hussein was kicking out weapons inspectors and thumbing his nose at UN resolutions. What US planners did not anticipate (or if they did, did not properly plan for) in my opinion was the insurgency that welled up with religious fervor in both countries. If the war with Iraq had only been with the Iraqi military and a solid government was running the country things would have turned out much different. As it was, the tribalistic and theocratic underpinnings of the region has created a sectarian minefield. That brings us to today, where we are looking at both groups bowling all over said minefield. I'm reserving a complete judgement on this and as I have said recently don't see the small number of advisors and security that Obama has sent as going back on his decision not to put boots on the ground. I can't say that this is a true sectarian Civil War but at the same time ISIS (or whatever their name is) is a force without a nation. Much like the insurgency spearheaded by Al Queada (sp?), any well organized military would have the same problems that were faced by the coalition before. It is said that you do not go into a battle you don't know that you can win. I think that's what has me on the not sure yet line right now. Let's face it, we knew we could win in Iraq 1 and Iraq 2, at least against the Iraqi army. Iraq 3 would start off in the same quagmire that came out after Hussein fell. There's not a solid path of victory that can be mapped there, at least not yet. Until Later! C. Hatton Humphrey http://www.eastcoastconservative.com Every cloud does have a silver lining. Some of the bunkers contained large quantitiesof unfilled chemical munitions, conventional munitions, one-ton shipping containers, old disabled production equipment (presumed disabled under UNSCOM supervision), and other hazardous industrial chemicals. 17.05 The Chemical Weapons Convention, which Iraq joined in 2009, requires it to dispose of the material at Al Muthanna, even though it was declared unusable and does not pose a significant security risk However, the UK goverment has acknowledgeded that the nature of the material contained in the two bunkers would make the destruction process difficult and technically challenging. Under an agreement signed in Baghdad in July 2012, experts from the MODâs Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) were due to provide training to Iraqi personnel in order to help them to dispose of the chemical munitions and agents. Re: I thought Hussein didn't have chemical weapons...

The weapons stockpiled at the Al Muthanna complex are old, contaminated and hard to move, officials said. (*facepalm*) So we're not worried about it because they don't think they can create a functional weapon. As Bruce pointed out these folks have a huge level of ingenuity. My fear is that this is being viewed from a western lens... someone tells use, that's expired and many will throw it out. Seems to me that if they can kill any group of people with it they will. If a drug's potency goes down when it expires that doesn't mean it becomes inert. It becomes unpredictable. I'm not a chemist but I would say that if the age takes effectiveness down by a percentage (let's say a factor of 50%) a dispersal that would originally have killed 10,000 will now kill 5,000. Re: Prosecutors allege Gov. Scott Walker schemed to bypass campaign laws

The political fallout for the likely 2016 presidential candidate is unclear. Walker has denied wrongdoing, and no charges have been filed. But Thursdayâs development thrusts an investigation into his political activities that had gone dormant back into the news as the governor is locked in a neck-and-neck race for a second full term. And Democrats were quick to pounce. The newly released court papers came in response to a lawsuit by the Wisconsin Club for Growth and its director against the prosecutors. The group has argued that it was unfairly targeted by subpoenas and that its First Amendment rights were infringed as a result. A U.S. district judge ruled in favor of the group last month, in a decision that halted the investigation into possible illegal coordination and represented a victory for Walker. A federal appeals judge is now reviewing that ruling. Read more: http://www.politico.com/story/2014/06/scott-walker-campaign-fundraising-108073.html#ixzz358ixPcjy Until Later! C.
