I agree with the concept here, but there are just better (e.g. more

  Would that be condonable?

As Jerry pointed out, these aren't dogs where the soldiers either have the

shooting them.

Yes, biologically they're the same dogs that we have here in the US as pets.
But they've not been raised as pets and they do not have the disposition of

It is difficult, yes. When I first read Bruce's post I had a knee-jerk
reaction and was pretty upset. But there is that separation.

I'm also not a big fan of hunting for sport, or even hunting in general I
guess. Me personally, I could never shoot an animal (unless it was in self
defense or the defense of my family). But seeing as how I'm not vegetarian
and I don't suffer the delusion that all of the animals that provided the
meat that I eat died of old age after living out full lives, I try not to be
hypocritical or judgmental.

In this particular case tho, I really have to force myself to make the
distinction between packs of wild dogs and dogs as a house pet. When you
have 30,000 wild, feral dogs running around an area, I don't know that I
believe they can all be rehabilitated (nor do I think the resources exist in
that area to handle that, even if it were possible).

As far as the shooting/hunting, as has been said by others in this thread...
I'm not there, and I don't know what it's like to be under those
circumstances.

Given both those things, I can't help but reserve judgment. Which again, is
a conscious effort.

Re: Anybody Here Against Gay Marriage?

Which then leads us to CamChi's point: why have ANY marriage

I am confused as to what government has to do with a religious
concoction anywho. Maybe I am missing a history lesson here, but
isn't marriage a construct of the church?

I guess The Man does have to get his taxes, doesn't he?

Well that's kind of the thing, or part of the thing. My wife, being
*legally* married to me, gets health benefits as my spouse. My wife and I,
as a *legally* married couple, file our taxes as a married couple, which
(presumably) has a different outcome than if we filed separately.

So there are two facets to this. One is the legal definition of a married
couple versus two people living together and sharing a life. There are
certain benefits to that. I believe that I heard some states will recognize
partners, in the case of gay couples, and extend those same benefits. I'm
not sure if it's all states, and I'm not sure if I'm even correct in that.
But as far as the question of should two people who share a life together
be entitled to the same benefits... the answer is absolutely yes. Ralph
and Frank, who have been living together for 11 years and share bank
accounts and the like should be entitled to every benefit that I receive
after living together as a married couple with my wife.

But that also becomes a gray area. My wife and I are, again, *legally*
married. Should that union dissolve, we'd get a divorce and said benefits
would end. She'd no longer get the benefit of health coverage from my
employer,etc.

In the case of Ralph and Frank, there's no *legal* beginning to that union,
so there cannot be a *legal* end. So... how does ABC Health Company know
whether or not Frank is legally entitled to coverage on Ralph's health plan?

The marriage ceremony itself is a construct of the church moreso than the
actual institution of marriage. The institution of marriage is a civil
union. You don't have to get married in a church. You can get married at
city hall.

Gay couples do get married at churches. Those marriages just aren't
recognized as legal civil unions. Therein lies the rub. Ralph tells his
healthcare coverage company that Frank is his partner and they live together
as spouses. The healthcare company can't really confirm that Frank and
Ralph have lived together for 11 years (unless they're willing to spend time
and money doing some investigative research).

Whether or not a religious institution recognizes the marriage is almost
irrelevant. The government needs to recognize (well, first it needs to
allow) the civil union between two consenting adults. Whether it's a man
and a woman, a man and a man, or a woman and a woman. Every legal adult
deserves to be treated in the same way, receiving the same benefits (and
yes, the same penalties) as any other adult. Until every adult is given the
right to partake in a civil union, a recognized civil union, then voting,
tax-paying citizens of the United States are being discriminated against.

I get that the thought of a man with a man or a woman with a woman doesn't
appeal to everybody. But that's kind of irrelevant. My Aunt Gladys is
pretty unappealing. You could fix her up with George Clooney and the
thought of the two of them together would still be unappealing. Doesn't
change the right that Aunt Gladys and George have the unalienable right to
get married and have hot monkey sex 8 nights a week. Same goes for Ralph
and Frank.

In my opinion, of course :)

Late to this party, but ditto on the previous responses. I have outlook
connected to gmail via IMAP. The only reason I even have Outlook on the
system anymore is for contacts (I just don't care for Google's Contact
Manager).
My wife and I use Google calendar. My outlook syncs with my calendar (don't
really even know why... but I set it up to do so), but I sync both my
calendar and my wife's directly to the iphone. Works great. Items show up
in different colors (depending on if it's my event or her event), add an
item to the iphone and it syncs right to google calendar, and vice-versa.
The ability to sync the Google Calendars with the iPhone is relatively new.
Blogged about it a lil' while back (

Nice. We're currently working the Dave Ramsey plan. Between credit

Changes in the Tax Laws

2009-04-05 Thread Charlie Griefer

The Economic Stimulus Package has produced more than 300 changes to
the IRS tax code. And another big change is taking place:

Income taxes are normally due on April 15th unless that date falls on
a Saturday or Sunday, in which case they are due on Monday the 16th or
17th.

However, I have been told that rule has recently been changed. For
this year, and at least for the next 4 years, tax payments will not be
due until you are nominated to a cabinet position.

Please check with your Tax adviser to confirm.

Fair point, but not unique to Obama's administration. Hell if I owned a
football team and wanted Bill Cowher to coach it, I'd have to interview
Denny Green first.
There are all sorts of minority groups out there based on race, religion,
etc.

If the administration were -only- accepting resumes from this particular
group, I'd agree that it would be an issue.

If a synagogue submitted a list of resumes of only Jewish folks, would you
be as pissed off at the administration? Would you even be pissed off at the
synagogue for trying to promote Jews?

Not sure about the distance... but yes, you can have 2 or 3 sets hooked up
to one dish (each tv needs a receiver tho).

Like Scott, I went with DirectTV for the Sunday Ticket, and looked forward
to the day that they were not exclusive so I could get rid of satellite.

Today, I'm really happy with it. Great HD lineup, they've finally rolled
out a VOD library (altho it's not as good as Comcasts, IMO), they've added
something called MediaShare that lets me transfer media from my PC to TV
(photos, music, and video... altho the video sucks right now as it
transcodes the files into zoomed in full screen crap... but to be fair, it's
labeled as being in beta).

And of course, they have a DVR which isn't quite as good as a true TiVO
(again, IMO), but better than the DVR I used to have with Comcast. Can
record 2 shows simultaneously and can record in HD.

For $80 a month, I get a crapload of channels (and a crapload of that
crapload in HD), one HD/DVR receiver, and one regular receiver (we've got 2
sets, only 1 HD). No HBO/ShowTime, etc. We used to have them as part of an
introductory package, but we've got enough other channels that I've not
really missed 'em.

I've only had one issue with reception. There were a few channels
(literally maybe 10) that were coming in pixellated. Called support, they
ran a test and said the dish needed alignment. Crew came out, charged me
$50 (and it's something I could have done myself, but I'm ok with paying $50
for someone who knows what they're doing to do it), and that was it.

Really been very happy with DirectTV lately.

Just a point of clarification. I didn't imply that Obama was doing this as
well. You may have inferred it. The House has passed the bill. Whether
it goes any further or not... we don't know yet. But right now, it's out
there and it's not dead.

You've gone on record as saying Obama, as POTUS, is ultimately responsible
for what happens. There's a bill out there right now that targets specific
individuals because members of government dislike the amount of money
they're making.

Now, let's not go off on a tangent about whether or not these executives
should get their money. For the sake of this particular argument, doesn't
matter. Legally and contractually, they are owed the money. That's why
this business of the 90% tax came about. Because there was no legal way to
stop them from collecting the money. So the government got creative and
targeted these people who did nothing wrong legally (again, in the specific
case of collecting their bonus).

If the bill dies, moot point. But as of now, it's very much alive. And if
it does not die, I'm curious as to whether or not those that were so vocal
about unconstitutional actions occurring under Bush are going to be just as
vocal.

(FWIW, I think the whole thing's silly. This sums it up nicely (and is one
of the reasons I love xkcd): http://xkcd.com/558/)

I agree with everything you said, but just would add something you
missed: the US taxpayer is now a majority investor in AIG.

Then the US taxpayer's Guy on Board should have inquired, prior to handing
over the cash, whether or not there were any bonuses to be paid within 'x'
timeframe. To be fair, AIG probably also should have asked for very
specific and clear boundaries to be defined as far as what this major
investor could or could not do. Although I suppose in the continued
interest of being fair, the US taxpayer's Guy on Board could have made it
more clear.

Majority investors are typically activist, if they're smart, and well
within their reason for doing so.

Or they're silent partners. I guess these things should have been discussed
prior to handing over and/or taking the investment.

Usually this activists put people on the board to watch over things
and make sure shit like this doesn't happen.

In this case, Congress and the President happens to be our guy on the board.

See above.

So there are a couple of tricky questions:

(1.) What span of control does the government have in a private
company's operations in cases like this?

See above :)

(snipping)

Or the law could - and probably is - written not against a specific
group of individuals as it is against bonuses for failed companies run
by government by necessity. Frankly that's great incentive for
companies to avoid failing - and apparently they need them.

But the law was written after the fact, because the gov't had no legal
recourse. That's why it's scary. It's scary because they'd hit a legal
wall and had to circumvent it. Gov't shouldn't be circumventing legal
walls. That's... y'know... bad.

Steelers to Lose Superbowl Trophies

2009-03-25 Thread Charlie Griefer

Steelers to lose Super Bowl Trophies

Pittsburgh, PA. The Super Bowl XLIII Champion Pittsburgh Steelers, the only
team to win six titles, will soon be losing half of those trophies. After a
meeting between NFL Commissioner Rodger Goodell and President Barack Obama,
Obama decided to redistribute half of their Steeler Super Bowl victories and
trophies to less fortunate teams in the league.

“We live everyday in the country that invented the Super Bowl.” said Obama
“We are not about to lose this Great American tradition in the wake of these
difficult times.” Obama’s plan calls for the Steelers, who are a successful
NFL team, to give half of their Super Bowl trophies to teams that are not
successful or have not been as successful as the Steelers. “The Detroit
Lions are just as much a part of the same fiber of the NFL as the Steelers
and they should, no rather will, be entitled to a Super Bowl Trophy as
well.” Obama explains in his plan that he has imposed on Goodell and the
NFL.

The Pittsburgh Steelers, who by virtue of hard work, excellent team play,
stellar draft choices, responsible investing of free agents, careful hiring
of coaches and excellent community service and commitment to their fans, has
prospered greatly during the past 30 years and have won six Super Bowl
Trophies. But President Barack Obama’s plan calls for the Pittsburgh
Steelers to carry the larger burden of the NFL’s less successful teams.
Obama went on to further proclaim, “In these difficult times we are all in
this to work together. We must reclaim the NFL Championship Dream for every
team, for every city and for every fan.”

“My plan will not affect 31 of the 32 teams in the league.” Obama assures.
That’s over 95 percent of the teams in the NFL will not have to worry about
losing any Super Bowl Trophies. “The worst teams in the NFL and the teams
that can’t seem to get a break and win a championship will no longer have to
worry about going without a title.” Obama promises. “We are a country and
league of hope. We all need to make a change. It does not matter the color
of the teams uniforms, the personal decisions that the teams make or their
performance but rather if they are a member of this great American league.”

The Super Bowl XLIII trophy will be redistributed to the 0-16 Detroit Lions.
Through no fault of their own incompetence, the Lions could not manage a
victory all season and this trophy will help ease the pain of their lack of
performance and give them hope once again. The redistribution of Super Bowl
XL trophy will go directly to the Steeler’s division rival the Cincinnati
Bengals. The Bengals who also have fallen on hard times have never won a
Super Bowl. This victory will bring a smile to hundreds of Bengal fans all
over the world as they can now celebrate. Finally, one of the Steeler’s two
Super Bowl victories over the Dallas Cowboys will go back to the Cowboys
since the league needs to provide hope in the face of difficulty and provide
hope in the face of uncertainty. This is a heavy burden for the Steelers but
together we can all prosper.

All hope is not lost for Pittsburgh fans; Barack Obama has another plan in
place. Obama has met with MLB and commissioner Bud Selig on a similar plan.
The New York Yankees will redistribute two of their World Series trophies to
the Pittsburgh Pirates as a supplement to their losing 16 straight seasons
and counting. This plan will help stimulate the Pirates and enable them to
regain the American Dream. Barack Obama will be meeting with the NHL and
Michael Phelps in the upcoming weeks as this issue is high on his agenda for
“Hope and Change.”

Not necessarily. As Jim said (I believe), MS makes VMs available with
various versions of IE on them. They expire after a certain date, but no...
you don't have to license another copy of windows. It comes with XP (SP3 i
believe), and whatever version of IE that particular VM has on it. You're
free to use it for testing until it expires.

I use Virtual PC. I like it and it's free.

Other people use VMWare... they like and (I think?) it's free.

From I can tell there's really not much technical difference between them.

Microsoft does provide free, already-configured VPC images for IE 6/7/8,
that might push in that direction:

google analytics question

2009-03-20 Thread Charlie Griefer

Hey All...
Didn't think this was appropriate enough for cf-talk.

We're evaluating Google Analytics, specifically the need for defining a
multi-step process goal (what they refer to as funneling).

We're using Model-Glue, and the standard GA code is included in all of the
layout files, which means it's there by default on all pages:

script type=text/javascript
var pageTracker = _gat._getTracker(XX-XXX-X);
pageTracker._initData();
pageTracker._trackPageview();
/script

Note the last line.

Now, in a few specific pages, I want to be able to track manually. My
understanding is that this can be done via:

script type=text/javascript
pageTracker._trackPageview('PageToTrack');
/script

So, let's say the multi-step pages I want to track have the code above, but
in place of 'PageToTrack', it's got 'Step1', 'Step2', and 'Step3'.

Anyone know if this will override the original pageTracker._trackPageView()
method call that's not passing anything?

Thanks!
Charlie

Like Casey said... being 2 hours from Tahoe is pretty cool. We did our
first Tahoe trip about a month ago (we're closer to 4 hours away), and we'll
be doing many more. It's a breathtaking place. Looking forward to seeing
it in summer.

Check out some real estate sites. www.movoto.com is one I've been using
recently to price homes. Also gives you a little graph of crime index for
the area as well as the entire state for the past few years.

Sorry. wish I could give you more. Never been to the area. But we've been
in the east bay (which is just about 2 hours south... maybe a little less)
for a year and a half and really like the area a lot. Tahoe, Yosemite, and

If you want to have Cramer on your show and bully him for sticking his

deserves it, and certainly it’s not hard to see Cramer as emblematic
of Wall Street arrogance. The problem is that Stewart’s critique of
Jim Cramer, or of the financial press in general, is not new or
particularly relevant — banks have been collapsing for a year. It only
became an issue when Stewart wanted to delegitimize Santelli and
Cramer’s comments on the Obama administration.

Stewart was not (IMO) bullying Cramer specifically, and said as much a few
times in the interview. He certainly wasn't bullying him for making picks
and simply being wrong.

Stewart was lambasting the whole notion of financial journalism and
questioning whether or not it was impartial and thoroughly researched prior
to being reported.

As far as it not being new, that's irrelevant and does not diminish the
message. Attacking Stewart's motives do not do anything to diminish the
accuracy of what he says (otherwise, I imagine you (or, I guess Mark Heming)
would be attacking the accuracy of what he says). I think the motives are
pretty simple. Ratings. Not necessarily a particularly noble motive, but
as Stewart himself points out, it's an entertainment show and the goal of
the show is to be successful. Still, doesn't reflect on the accuracy of the

Re: Cramer, Just Shut Up Already

2009-03-13 Thread Charlie Griefer

Either you're reading more into it than me, or you have greater depth
perception than I do, because I don't see where Obama figures into any of
this.
Stewart may be a fake journalist and perhaps he should have been asking all
those questions over the past two years.

How does that impact the allegations that he's making now?

The question is, at a very high level, was CNBC lax, or even unethical in
their journalistic ventures. Rather than discuss or debate the answer to
that question, you're attacking the person who proposed the question. He's
a fake journalist and he should have been asking all these questions two
years ago. Fine. Doesn't undermine the fact that he asked the question
now, even if you really really want it to.

It's probably safe to say tho, that lots of folks get pissed off in a great
many of the threads here. that's part of the fun of cf-community :)
I think some of the concern that Gel is expressing, which I'll admit to
feeling myself upon seeing Judith's reply, is that... well, is there a
distinction between Michael the list owner and Michael the community
participant? If someone disagrees with you (Michael the community
participant), do they need to tread lightly for fear of pissing off Michael
the list owner? Surely there have been threads between Robert and Gruss or
Gruss and Sam or even Larry and myself that were just as bad as the thread
in question, and none of them were subject to intervention.

I will say it was very cool to see Judith go all lioness protecting her
mate. If that's all it was, that's cool. I'd like to think if my wife was
on the list, she'd stand up for me (altho truth be told we'd probably be the
ones needing intervention). But brandishing the list owner title made it
feel like it isn't necessarily a wise move to disagree with you (or to
disagree as vehemently as Judah did) in a way that makes you different than
simply being Michael the community participant in the context of these
discussions.

I didn't read Judah's comment as suggesting that Michael leave the list. I
read it as more of I'm not buying what you're selling so take it somewhere
else (figuratively). Of course, it could be my comprehension that sucks...
but I give Judah the benefit of the doubt that he's intelligent enough to
know that the list owner is probably -not- going to literally leave the
list.
Even if I'm correct in my interpretation, I can definitely see where it
could have been taken the other way. We may never know :)
I did, however, read Judith's you're on thin ice as being threatening as
to Judah's potential continued status as a subscriber :)

Since I had little else to do, on impulse, I told her that no, I didn't

a dog, and that I was starting the Purina Diet again, although I probably
shouldn't because I ended up in the hospital last time. On the bright side
though, I'd lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with
tubes coming out of every hole in my body and IVs in both arms.

I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way that it
works is to load your pockets with Purina nuggets and simply eat one or two
every time you feel hungry and that the food is nutritionally complete so I
was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically
 everyone
in the line was enthralled with my story by now.)

Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care because the dog food
had poisoned me. I told her no; I had stopped in the middle of the parking
lot to lick my butt and a car hit me.

One is called Sea Shadow. It's big, black and looks like a cross between a

looks like a floating field house, with an arching roof and a door that is
76 feet wide and 72 feet high. Sea Shadow berths inside the barge, which
keeps it safely hidden from spy satellites.

The barge, by the way, is the only fully submersible dry dock ever built,
making it very handy -- as it was 35 years ago -- for trying to raise a
 sunken nuclear-armed Soviet submarine
